the illustrations tell the real story
By Helene Johnson
What a lovely children's book. What struck me were the illustrations of this beautiful bi-racial family. The message for children of all colors is that families are families no matter their size, makeup or color. Nice job Mr. Simms. I hope this book is on every family's shelf.

Couldn't recommend this book enough
By E. Schmidt
Couldn't recommend this book enough! There are far too few books for children in interracial families to relate to that just tell a story without highlighting any kind of color spectrum. The kids in this book had a great day at the zoo, with parents who just happen to look a little different, but the best part is that the difference isn't even pointed out. It's just a loving family enjoying time together at the zoo. If I could give it more stars I would! Well done Mr. Simms!

This book was pretty good.
By A Customer
I'll have to say it was well thought out. Stacey has to "house-sit" while regular sitting clients of the BSC are away in Paris for awhile. Then she finds that the household appliances are warm and have been used; dishes washed, coffee pots warm....Hmm? What is going on? It could've been creepier and it could've been on a better reading level, but overall you will like it. As I mostly advise to anyone, please check it out at the library before you buy it so you know what you're getting.

The SSSSS of cooking: Simple Senior Single Serving Solutions
By JohnAroundTheCornerReviews
I'm a single senior, or an old bachelor, take your pick. Either way, I prefer Simple Senior Single Serving Solutions (and I love it when I can assimilate something, as the author almost did with his title, Meals Mug Mix Microwave, and did for real with four of his recipe names).

This cookbook is full of recipes that use exactly one dish, but I will admit that I cheated, I bought a large mug at Aldi's so I can make some double recipes. The directions are more complicated than in the Weight Watchers cookbook I looked at earlier, but nothing that a semi-literate senior citizen like me can't follow. (Maybe I should change my title to "Sort of Simple Senior Single Serving Solutions" or should I even add one more S?

Sorta Simple Single Senior Single Serving Solutions

I much prefer cooking in the microwave. Clean up is often easier, and as long as we make sure that our ingredients are fully cooked, they are healthy and easy to eat. In fact, we cook our dish in the microwave, then eat right out of the same "dish" and then, usually, cleanup is simple.

I found one direction just a little confusing. One ingredient is listed as "1 oz 1 large egg" -- I'm going to try it with one egg and ignore the weight.

As the title tells us, there are 20 recipes in the book, and the author seems to have my penchant for duplicate letters, as four of the recipes have the initials CCC:

CCC: Coffee Cup Chilaquiles
CCC: (1-Minute Paleo) Choc Chip Cookie
CCC: Coffee Cup Quiche (well, it sounds like a C)
CCC: Coffee Cup Coffeecake

Apparently that was the limit of author Julian Stone's ability to assimilate titles, but he has 16 other recipes in his book -- Huevos Rancheros Egg Whites Mug, Apple Banana "Baked" Oatmeal in a Mug, Mug Cheesecake, Pumpkin Coffee Cake in a Mug, Flax Seed Muffin in a Mug, Apple Crisp in a Mug, Banana French Toast in a Mug, Carrot & Pistachio Cake in a Mug, Banana Bread Mug Cake, Blueberry Flax Microwave Muffin, Cinnamon Roll Mug Cake, Instant Mug o' Mac & Cheese in the Microwave, Strawberries & Cream Mug Cake, Meat Loaf in a Mug, Mexican Street Corn in a Cup, and Microwaved Sausage and Cheese Spaghetti Dinner

The price of the book seems just right to me. I hate paying large amounts for books that I won't use except on occasion. Try it, you might love it.

One of a kind from R.L.Stine's gooesbumps series
By Edward Isogai
This book is certainly one of a kind.

Another great book by R.L.Stine, and this is one of my favorite books. Whether you like science fiction or not, you will still like this book if you're goosebumps/R.L.Stine fan.

Sammy Jacob is into ghosts and science fiction. Not exactly the smartest hobby- at least not if you ask Sammy's parents. They're research scientists and they only believe in REAL science.

But now Sammy's met someone who's totally unreal. He's hanging out in Sammy's room. And eating his cereal at breakfast. Sammy's got to find a way to get rid of his new "friend" Only problem is... Sammy's new friend is invisible! (From the back of the book)

The reason why I like this book so much has to be the ending. I mean, the storyline is great. But the ending is very twisted, funny, and for me, cool. I often wonder how R.L.Stine gets his ideas.

To people who don't like Goosebumps because its not scary. What do you expect? It's for 7 - 12 year old kids, meaning not very frightening but a mysterious ending. Goosebumps is a mystery book in a sort way, because every time you read goosebumps series, you wonder how the storyline is going to be connected to the ending. I started to read goosebumps at the age of 8, and never once did I thought goosebumps was scary. (I read almost every book of the Original Goosebumps Series). But I still love goosebumps, and R.L.Stine is the authour that made me wanting to be an authour. So the bottom line is, don't read goosebumps if you want chill on your back. If you want a chill, I'd say watch the movie "The Grudge". LOL!

Anyways, this book gets 5 star for great storyline, ok characterism, and some-what cool ending. =)

Can Sammy get rid of Brent before Brent ruins his life?
By Raj
Synopsis: Sammy Jacobs wishes he were invisible because his parents never seem to want to spend any time with him. Sammy's parents, who are scientists, always admire and praise Sammy's brother Simon, because Simon has a very serious personality, and is interested in science and school activities. Sammy is a science fiction freak and loves anything that has aliens in it. Therefore, when he finds his bedroom window open, his homework scattered on the floor, and finds himself tripping over "nothing", Sammy begins to feel that something strange is going on.

When his friend Roxanne Johnson comes to visit Sammy, she suggests they do their class report on the ghost of Hedge House, a house that is supposed to be haunted. Roxanne suggests going to the house and videotaping the ghost for their report. Sammy soon realizes that there is either a ghost or an invisible person by the name of "Brent Green" in his room.

At first, Sammy thinks that having an invisible friend would be cool, but later he finds out that Brent is ruining his life. When he asks Brent to appear in front of Roxanne, Brent doesn't show up, and Roxanne decides to tell everyone in school about Sammy's make believe friend, making him a laughing stock. Things go from bad to worse at home, when Brent creates a mess out of Sammy's room and eats half the food at home, placing all the blame on Sammy. Brent also ruins Sammy's chance at the track race, making all the students hate him, and an incident in the library makes the librarian think that Sammy is crazy.

Can Sammy figure out a way to get rid of Brent, especially when he starts to think that Brent could be dangerous?

Review: I did not think that this book was as good as others in the series. For one thing, there is no explanation given as to why Brent decides to choose Sammy as a best friend over everyone else. He just suddenly appears in Sammy's life and no explanation is given as to why. Secondly, the story starts to repeat itself though the book as Brent ruins Sammy's life in different situations without Sammy doing anything about it.

However, this is not to say that the book is extremely bad. I thoroughly enjoyed the part where Roxanne and Sammy go to Hedge House and Roxanne gets terrified. I felt this was a good payback for what she did to Sammy. The ending also had a complete twist that I did not see coming at all. It is because of the ending that I gave this review more stars than I had intended to.

Overall, I feel like if Stine had been able to give a detailed explanation of the history behind Brent's character, I would have enjoyed this book more. So, even though this is not one of the better Goosebumps books, if you hare a fan of the series, you can take a look at it.

Ending Lets Down a Great Obsessed With Victim, Stalker Invisible Boy Story
By James N Simpson
I love invisible man fiction and R. L. Stine's My Best Friend is Invisible, for the most part is one of the best thrillers, of adult or children's fiction. It's only that this is a kids' book that as the plot unravels stops the reader being truly terrified for the victim Sammy, as you know nothing bad will be allowed to happen in a junior fiction novel. Basic plot of this one is that Sammy Jacobs has grown up in a household where his parents don't give him much attention, unless they are telling him off for his behaviour or telling him he should be more like his better behaved brother who also takes school and real science more seriously than Sammy does. However Sammy does have a fan though, an invisible boy named Brent who has turned up in his room and is obsessed with becoming Sammy's best friend. At first Sammy doesn't mind this but Brent won't reveal he exists to Sammy's best friend Roxanne, his teachers or anyone else. The only other one who knows is his tormented pet cat. Trying to impress Sammy, Brent tries helping him in the classroom and on the sporting field but just humiliates him instead. Lead by Roxanne the rest of the school starts mocking him with their own pretend invisible friends. With tension mounting between the visible and invisible roommates, Sammy is determined to get Brent out of his life.

An average ending that seems to be included as the word count limit was reached and Stine didn't know how to end the former great plot, lets down the book. Stine must have just thought if I include this out of nowhere twist, readers will forget that I haven't resolved any of the problems or unanswered questions in the plot. We also never find out how Brent became invisible in the first place, we don't even find out how he came to choose Sammy as his obsession.

This book would make a great horror movie if it got rid of the twist ending and was aimed at a bit older market allowing the plot to go in more terrifying directions and the stalker style obsession being turned down by the victim to have the consequences it should. But it's a decent read for fans of the invisible man genre. Stine has another invisible kid novel called Let's Get Invisible where a mirror turns kids invisible. It's not very good but may be something you want to check out.

However the best reads in the invisibility genre are -
(Younger children fiction)
My Invisible Sister by Beatrice Colin & Sara Pinto
Invisible Fran by Jim Benton
Invisible Man's Socks by Alex Shearer
Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich by Adam Rex
You are Invisible by Susan Saunders (Also has, like this book does, kids in an attic if you're into this)
The Invisible Day by Marthe Jocelyn
Selby's Shemozzle by Duncan Ball

(For those up to the older reading level)
Memoirs of an Invisible Man by H. F. Saint
Smoke by Donald E. Westlake
The Invisible Man by H. G. Wells

Big Bend Railroads (Images of Rail), by Dan Bolyard

The Big Bend area had its start with a land grant given by President Lincoln to the Northern Pacific Railway. As such, the railway company heavily promoted the area to encourage settlement and populate the station sites along the way. Towns began to develop in the late 1880s; prior to that time, the few settlers had a difficult time getting around. Despite snow, floods, fires, wrecks, human error, sabotage, and government regulation, the railroads continued and were able to serve the communities and help them survive. The earliest lines were built largely by man and beast with few large machines. The last transcontinental line in the Big Bend, the Milwaukee Road, featured groundbreaking technology in the form of electrically operated locomotives. The building of Grand Coulee Dam brought more railroad lines, with tracks that featured grades and locomotives normally seen on logging railroads, to bring in construction materials to the largest concrete structure in the world at the time.

Great Book
By Chopper
Just got this book and it is awesome. I have always wondered where some of the old railroad grades in Eastern Washington, that you could see from the highway, went to or what they used to look like when active and now I know. After going through the book a couple of times, I looked at Google Earth and found some of the former bridges and landmarks.

Very well done book

"Engaging Stories For Children"
By Nancy L. Silk, Author/Reviewer
This book contains two stories, "Princess Bellisma" and the short tale of "Alicia And The Wolf" which is based on "Little Red Riding Hood" by Charles Perrault. Princess Bellisma, 15 years old, lives with her mother, Queen Sarah, in the Kingdom of Kindall. Knight William tells the queen a dragon is approaching the castle and wants to move her and Bellisma to safety. Suddenly Sorcerer Malrick appears in the room and tells them it is HIS dragon approaching. No harm will come if he is granted marriage to Bellisma in five years when she becomes 20 years old. This is a well written story which children will like. The next story is very short about Alicia learning of her grandmother's illness. She fills a basket of food to deliver to her. Her mom tells her to go swiftly and not to linger along the way as her trip takes her through the woods where grandma lives in a small cottage. After walking for sometime, Alicia fears she's being watched. She sees nothing to fear, but she hears the howling of a wolf. Suddenly she comes across a bandit obstructing her path. He wants her basket, but he's not going to get it!! Very surprising tale here that will excite kids. Many photos are included to depict the characters of these wonderful tales.

`Alicia returned to her village, all the while under the protection of White-Paw, the white wolf.'
By Grady Harp
In 1983, François Bissonnette, created the early versions of the Zirons. But it was not until 1998, a few years after the birth of his two daughters, that the author published his first book of Zirons. And lucky for all that he has embraced a new direction. These little stories involve imagination, realism, surrealism, and magic and are bound to be favorites of children throughout the world. The book is for boys and girls age group 4 to 9 years.

François visits that time-honored land of fairy tales in this Book 4 of his Stories of Children. In this book the fantasies are accompanied by richly colored photographs of models in costumes to match the story - a new and welcome addition to the quality of the book.

To maintain the history of fairy tales François opens with the infamous `Once upon a time, there was a queen named Sarah. Ever since the king passed away, she ruled over the kingdom of Kindall all alone.' It involves a beautiful princess - `Bellisima' - and a knight and of course a dragon and a sorcerer - Malrick, the owner of the dragon - who demands the hand of Bellisima, but Bellisima loves Prince Thomas. Malrick intervenes when he discovers the news and steals away Bellisima. The Queen, and Prince Thomas of course, seek aid from the Elf Queen who agrees to help if Thomas kills Malrick's dragon. But of course with an exchange of miracles and courage it all works out well.

The second story is `Alicia and the Wolf' - a sort of parody of Little Red Riding Hood but with much more character and a larger cast of both humans and animals.

The stories are charming, illustrated with beautiful photographs of the animals and the people involved and together they make perfect bedtime stories for children. François Bissonnette wins again! Grady Harp, February 15

A beautiful story that is told in a charming manner
By Israel Drazin
Francois Bissonnete writes beautifully telling his stories in a charming manner that fascinates children. His books grab and hold the interest of children. They are filled with suspense and magic. Many of the tales are retellings of classical fairy tales with multiple variations that teach children good lessons.
This book contains two tales with nice pictures. There was a queen who was loved by her people, a very nice woman who loved her 15 year old beautiful daughter. One day her kingdom was attacked by a dragon. She ordered her army to fight the dragon but they were unable to defeat it. A sorcerer appeared. He said he sent the dragon. He demanded that the queen give him her daughter as a wife, otherwise he would have the dragon destroy the kingdom. He said he wanted her when she attained age 20, in five years. The queen was forced to agree. Now she had to find a way to save her daughter from the sorcerer. Children will delight finding what happens next, which involves a prince and elves.
The second story is a charming variation of red Riding Hood, but the wolf White Paw protects Alicia rather than harming her.

Just what I wanted
By Kl1str0n
I wanted a book to help me learn to set up linear programming solutions.

I got what I wanted and more.

So many books dwell on how the methods work, instead of setting up the problems. This book is all about the problems and how to set them up.

This book is about how to get results and understand what they mean.

Recommended without reservation to anyone wanting to learn the how's and why's of using linear programming in business.

Great series!
By hunter
I have several of this series from when I was little & I have been trying to complete the series for my girls. These books are timeless. My girls & I love them. This story was not quite as fun as the others. It's hard to make a caterpillar's life as exciting as a puppy or kittens! But the photographs were gorgeous as always & still a great story!

The Tao of Vegetable Gardening: Cultivating Tomatoes, Greens, Peas, Beans, Squash, Joy, and Serenity, by Carol Deppe

The Tao of Vegetable Gardening explores the practical methods as well as the deeper essence of gardening. In her latest book, groundbreaking garden writer Carol Deppe (The Resilient Gardener, Breed Your Own Vegetable Varieties) focuses on some of the most popular home garden vegetables―tomatoes, green beans, peas, and leafy greens―and through them illustrates the key principles and practices that gardeners need to know to successfully plant and grow just about any food crop.

Deppe’s work has long been inspired and informed by the philosophy and wisdom of Tao Te Ching, the 2,500-year-old work attributed to Chinese sage Lao Tzu and the most translated book in the world after the Bible. The Tao of Vegetable Gardening is organized into chapters that echo fundamental Taoist concepts: Balance, Flexibility, Honoring the Essential Nature (your own and that of your plants), Effortless Effort, Non-Doing, and even Non-Knowing. Yet the book also offers a wealth of specific and valuable garden advice on topics as diverse as:

•    The Eat-All Greens Garden, a labor- and space-efficient way to provide all the greens a family can eat, freeze, and dry―all on a tiny piece of land suitable for small-scale and urban gardeners.

•    The growing problem of late blight and the future of heirloom tomatoes―and what gardeners can do to avoid problems, and even create new resistant varieties.

•    Establishing a Do-It-Yourself Seed Bank, including information on preparing seeds for long-term storage and how to “dehybridize” hybrids.

•    Twenty-four good places to not plant a tree, and thirty-seven good reasons for not planting various vegetables.

Designed for gardeners of all levels, from beginners to experienced growers, The Tao of Vegetable Gardening provides a unique frame of reference: a window to the world of nature, in the garden and in ourselves.

Review

Publishers Weekly-

"This thoughtful book is a guide for growing tomatoes, squash, and greens, but its most significant contribution is Deppe’s approach to gardening. She encourages the gardener to cultivate an intuitive relationship with plants and almost a sixth sense about when to actively work in the garden, and when to stand back and let the plants do the growing they need to do. She calls it the Tao of gardening, a form of 'non-doing' or 'doing that which gives maximum effect for the minimum effort,' so that unnecessary action has been eliminated. It is about balance: not watering too much, not fertilizing too much. She further enjoins the gardener to create a relationship with the garden, knowing what needs tending what needs to be left alone. The advice for raising tomatoes and greens will benefit the gardener, but the magic of the book is the way it teaches the gardener how to grow with the garden.”

“With the insight of a skilled breeder Carol Deppe has drawn together the best of ancient wisdom and traditional crops. Gardeners rejoice! The past has never promised us a better future than in these pages.”--Roger B. Swain, host of PBS’s “The Victory Garden”

"In The Tao of Vegetable Gardening Carol Deppe uses Taoist philosophical concepts to communicate gardening wisdom learned through longtime practice and experimentation. She seemlessly integrates excellent how-to advice with her reflections on cultivation, plants, soil, the elements, and life. This book is as profound as it is practical, and will be a great source of information and inspiration for both experienced gardeners and those just starting out."--Sandor Ellix Katz, author, The Art of Fermentation

“There are many knowledgeable gardeners but very few wise ones. Carol Deppe is both. Her excellent new book, The Tao of Vegetable Gardening, serves up generous portions of homegrown know-how gleaned from three decades worth of experimentation. It will, no doubt, make you a better gardener. What sets this book apart, though, is its potential for making us into happier gardeners by sharing the deeper life lessons our gardens have to teach. The Chinese word tao can be defined in different ways but my favorite is "path," and Carol Deppe shows us that the timeless path to health, happiness and wholeness cuts right through our own backyard, if we choose to take it.”--Roger Doiron, Founding Director, Kitchen Gardeners International

“Why do different ripe tomatoes harvested from the same plant in the same season taste different? What does bean seed color have to do with vigor and flavor? After nearly forty years in the seed business, I still learn amazing things from each new book by Carol Deppe. The Tao of Vegetable Gardening melds the observational skills and curiosity of a molecular geneticist with the sheer joy and inner harmonies of a practicing participant in the garden's dance of life.”--CR Lawn, founder, Fedco Seeds

“The Tao of Vegetable Gardening is another absolutely brilliant book from Carol Deppe. It’s smart, ultimately sensible, refreshing in the way old assumptions get questioned, vastly informative about gardening―plus it’s a really good read. I mean, how many gardening books make you laugh out loud and get you to pick up the phone and order a tool from a place called Red Pig? I’m so grateful for this book―I will have it memorized by the time the soil is ready to work.”--Deborah Madison, author, Vegetable Literacy

“If you want to read the complete, deepest-down lowdown on how to grow organic vegetables successfully, this is the book. It also stands as a guide to the most genuine, independent lifestyle possible, relying only on nature and the author's awesomely detailed knowledge of plant life to achieve successful food production and a contented way of life. The reader learns not only how to grow and cook vegetables, but how to breed new varieties and save the seed. And while you read her book, you are also charmed with the Tao philosophy of living--something I have come to believe is a sure path to tranquility.”--Gene Logsdon, author, Gene Everlasting and The Contrary Farmer

Booklist-

"Biologist and plant breeder Deppe (The Resilient Gardener, 2010) shares principles and practices that will 'allow a gardener to do nothing whatsoever after sowing the seed until it is time to come back and harvest.' Such wonderful pragmatism does not mean that this is a cut-and-dried how-to. Far from it. Deppe is lively, thoroughly engaged, and cheerfully direct, and her use of the tao is no gimmick. She infuses her in-depth, hands-on guide to growing, harvesting, preparing, and eating the most popular and nutritional vegetables with pithy and resonant philosophical observations, including such aphorisms as these, which preface the weeding section: 'Deal with the small before it is large. Deal with the few before they are many.' Age-old wisdom graces comprehensive, clear, and timely instructions on every aspect of vegetable cultivation and enjoyment, including Deppe’s guidance in avoiding late blight, the disease now threatening heirloom tomatoes, and her 'eat-all greens' strategy for growing succulent kale, mustard, and other leafy greens. Whether writing about squash or serenity, Deppe is pleasurable and enlightening company, and this is a vegetable gardener’s treasury.”

contrary? (sort of) 5 star review
By R. Gheen
-----I decided to list a few things I do NOT have in common with the author and why I don't care and give the book 5 stars Anyway. I wanted to give review readers something different.
If you don’t Care about Taoism, don’t worry, the actual stories are separated in the text. She refers to the concepts but it’s not like “religion”.(I’ve always liked Taoism but some people may not). If “a philosophy book” (several reviews)puts you off, just think of it as an Autobiography instead. Surely you can read an autobiography of someone different than you, without being offended, when so many helpful gardening ideas are in the book.
-----We have lots of weeks of 100 degrees some summers where I live. Not all her seed varieties would thrive here. I cannot fail to water my potatoes like her...they'd just dry up too soon. I don't mind reading about all her varieties in detail though or how descriptive she gets for things I can't do. I find it all Interesting and often fun reading.I'm educated enough that her science and research isn't "too much" for me either.
-----I am not a celiac but am somewhat into being prepared. This book and The Resilient Gardener have taught me all about what needs to be grown for calories and nutrients, year round, without grains(except corn which takes a lot of room but can be planted With some beans for space saving).
----I garden in intensive raised beds with fruit and nut trees and berries and wild-permaculture ground all around them, mostly in the same 1/4 acre area. I’m also a life long artistic Loner. She shares many field row-type acres with other people for her year's worth of food (and trials beds) and some are a mile away and she advocates trading for needs as well. If the #9 Cascadia quake happened here I don't know if we could even Get a mile with crumpled roads and bridges,or would dare leave our home.....just sayin.(wink) Despite this big difference, she tells about past times she has spent with raised beds(insightful like everything she writes) and I've found some of her crops can be applied to raised beds on my smaller scale with no problem.
--- I don't care if my cabbage space is nutrient-wasted-space in her mind(I ferment sauerkraut) and I love broccoli, which she finds no need to grow(as in nutrient-wasted-space). Some eat alls she grows can be successions After my cabbage and broc though. Sounds good to me! She does NOT tell people what not to grow....she just Emphasizes Why she grows what she does.
----I would not ever microwave my home grown food to Cook like she does(mostly other book) (I only use the defrost on occasion) .Problem is,you can't skip parts of her book that don't apply to you. Inserted in the middle of recipes you don't care about or scientific research you are starting to nod off over, will be a single sentence or paragraph of Knowledge/facts that you never even Thought of (researching yourself or trying) Just think of some pages as treasure-hunt reading...For me the cost of the books is nothing since a few ideas will change my gardening life forever. I certainly needed to learn the tomato-potato blight relationship which I somehow Never learned from other books.
----I love canning and she hates the heat and doesn't have time for it and says it kills all the nutrients anyway. Kills more nutrients than the Progresso and Dinty Moore she sometimes uses?????hahahah She Adds so many fresh nutrients to her flavor base, that part is a non issue and so is me eating my canning which I always combine with fresh foods Too. BUT I know where my home-canned soup bases came from and what's IN them! LOL!!! (laugh)
Well, I've used enough space but hope readers enjoy my "tried to sound different" review!

Readers of my blog will know I really like her stuff as discussed in my corn post
By Amazon Customer
Carol Deppe has a new book out. Readers of my blog will know I really like her stuff as discussed in my corn post, but I'm not sure if you know why.

It's not just that she provides a lot of practical information not provided elsewhere. All the books on my gardening shelf have that distinction, which is why they were purchased as opposed to the scores I just borrowed from the library and returned. There's only about 5-6 of them there frankly.

Carol's books are not on my shelf; Carol's books are on my Kindle, and besides my Kindle itself, I have a Kindle app on my phone. Carol's books are with me in the garden so I can look stuff up right when I need it.

But again, it's not just the wealth of information she provides. A lot of it is just... her.

First, I Just Like Her

There are certain authors you read and it's not just the story (for fiction) or information (for nonfiction) that is enjoyable; you just know you'd like them if you met them in person. Carol infuses enough of her personal experiences and thoughts into her books that I really get that. Aside from piles of useful info no other book has provided, I just know if she weren't on the wrong coast, if we sat down one night after dinner with a cup of coffee, we'd be up all night talking. Always assuming she liked me, of course!

There's few authors who've hit me like this. C. S. Lewis is one. Heinlein absolutely was another. Nancy Friday is a third. None of these folks write gardening books though. As far as authors go, this particular bit of my life is only "shared" with Carol.

Carol Approaches Gardening as a Scientist

Carol experiments with gardening like I do with cooking. As an example, all the rest of us gardeners buy inoculant for our peas and beans, cause we know we're supposed to. The symbiotic bacteria allow legumes to extract nitrogen from the air. Every single seed catalog, every gardening book, tells us to do this. Instead of following the instructions, Carol instead inoculated half a crop and didn't inoculate the other half, proving to herself it didn't matter at all.

In her new book, I particularly enjoyed her experiments with regards to whether carrots really do love tomatoes. Hilarious!

The Resilient Gardener (previous book)

I've read this book through easily 10 times in a year, not to mention the number of times I searched for reminders of her advice while out in the garden.

Though it is largely about how to grow real food crops for serious calories: dry beans, squash, corn, potatoes and eggs; it is also about how to garden in the practical sense. Having a great heirloom corn around isn't nearly so handy if you don't know how to cook it.

And as another example, she doesn't just tell you why you have to weed, but which hoes she's found most useful, how to use them without straining your back or wrists and how to sharpen them.

There's gobs of useful information gleaned from years of gardening experience boiled down and useful not only for beginners, but for experienced gardeners as well.

If you are a prepper, of either the gardening or cooking variety, this book is for you.

The Tao of Vegetable Gardening (new book)

Besides going all Zen on us, Carol again addresses both the beginner gardener and more experienced gardener in her new book with many practical tips. The crops covered include tomatoes, greens and fresh peas and beans, more typical of the crops newbie gardeners grow than the previous book.

The book wasn't supposed to be released until late January, but I pre-ordered the Kindle version weeks earlier and it was delivered the next day. So I had read it twice before it's release date!

As expected, she covered the crops in detail, provided much practical information from her years of experience and many personal stories. But honestly, I didn't buy it for those reasons.

There were two topics I was particularly interested in: what Carol calls eat-all greens and late blight.

Eat-all Greens

This is a method Carol came up with to make greens easy to deal with. Basically, it involves planting a fast-growing greens crop at the appropriate density that it grows upright out of the dirt. Then to harvest, you whack it off high enough to avoid the ickiest outer leaves and dirt, so you have a nice bunch of greens ready to cook without doing a bunch of clean up post-harvest. She explains this system and the appropriate spacing for her favorite greens.

Unfortunately, she does not like chard, which is my primary spring/summer green, so I shall have to experiment to find the best spacing to use it for eat-all greens. And while she does do a kale, which is my primary fall/winter green, it's not my favorite kale, so I'll have to experiment with that too.

Late Blight

This is a disease that is spreading through North America affecting tomato crops. It is related to the disease that caused the Irish potato famine, so pretty serious stuff.

When I saw this was one of the topics of her book, I freaked out a little bit. See, last year, my tomatoes started getting icky towards the end of the season. The thing is, I had so darned many of them, and was so far behind on processing them, that I didn't care. Hubby asked me at one point what was wrong with them and I just said it's probably because I'm not watering them cause I have too darned many tomatoes. But when I saw Carol was covering the topic, I googled for pictures and saw I had this nasty stuff.

The thing is, not knowing about it, I did everything wrong. I threw tomatoes that didn't seem worth processing over the fence for the chickens, nicely spreading the stuff around through the surrounding yard. I left the vines in the garden after I tore them off their support, cause no other nightshade is going to grow there for a while. So I've got this stuff all over.

I think this year to get a primary tomato crop, I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and spray a fungicide. The copper stuff seems to be basically the copper salt of a fatty acid, which does not strike me as too bad. But it will be the very first time I've sprayed stuff in my garden. 13 years here, and I've never added anything but compost, wood ash and some minerals before. :(

Carol provides a list of the heirlooms that seem to have some resistance. I grow Brandywines for fresh eating cause they're famous for yumminess and are from right here, Pennsylvania. I grow Matt's Wild Cherry cause it's the only cherry I've ever liked, but only a plant or two cause I just eat them outside, they're too small to bother hauling in the house.

But my beloved Opalkas! This variety is what I grow most of for processing. They're yummy enough fresh, but they're just HUGE sausage-shaped tomatoes, thick and almost no juice or seeds. I tried a number of paste-types before I settled on these and I adore them. And if I don't do something, they may cease to exist cause of late blight.

Here's the deal, I don't save seeds. I never have. I approve of seed-saving. I pretty much only grow open-pollinated stuff so seed saving is possible. I want seed catalogs to keep doing the growouts, so I keep buying the seed. I just have never been a hardcore gardening geek like Carol is.

Last year was the first time I had planned to save seed, Carol's Magic Manna because I wanted to keep growing it. I wanted to acclimate it to my region. And frankly, Carol is one person and the stuff might go away if something happens to her and I WANT it. Unfortunately, my chickens were blissfully unaware of how important this corn was, they broke through my fence and ate all my corn. Having put up a new and more chicken-proof fence, I have ordered more seed from her this year.

That was my first time even intending to save seed and it failed. But I've certainly never considered breeding. I mean, I just grow stuff. That's what I do. The complicated stuff is for other people.

Carol is a biologist and therefore has a different attitude to breeding than I do. I only ever took a single genetics course as an undergraduate and all I really recall is gobs of fruit flies were involved. As a graduate student, I took a recombinant DNA course. Dammit Jim, I'm a chemist, not a geneticist!

Carol manages to explain how to breed our favorite heirlooms with hybrids to achieve blight-resistance. And her explanations are such that even those of us who have forgotten more about genetics than we ever knew, thus yielding an actual negative knowledgebase, can follow her reasoning.

Apparently, I'm going to have to get into this as she does not seem to love Opalkas like I do and they may cease to exist if I don't do something.

And That's The Other Reason I Love Her Books

Chickens notwithstanding, I attempted to grow a flour corn last year - for the first time. And next year, I am going to give over my entire SFG to breeding experiments to try to build a blight-resistant Opalka.

And THAT is the mark of a truly great book, that after you've read it, you change your actual behavior.

But I need to read her Breeding Your Own Vegetable Varieties book first...

If You Are a Gardener, Buy Her Books

Seriously. And if you are NOT a gardener, but want to cook more fresh foods, at least buy The Resilient Gardener.

Love Carol Deppe, but the new book isn't my favorite
By lilmommy
I love all of Deppe's books. I was anticipating this one, but for me, the writing is not as well thought out as usual. The writing is a bit all over the place. Some is about gardening and some is about random musings of the garden which I could really do without. I'll explain. There is this whole movement of do-it-yourselfer's, bloggers and the likes, that recycle information (some of it they never experienced.) and sell it as if it is their own. Ulgh! And I am tired of buying books with all that recycled gardening info that helps no one.

Carol Deppe is the opposite of these scammers. She really knows her stuff and when I read her words I learn an incredible amount about gardening, from basic biology to genetics to the amounts you should plant and what specific kinds and results from her experiments and how to do your own experiments and what to be looking for to improve. I really hold her writing to a much higher standard- her books are my most used and most favorite. This book is all of that, and I did learn new things, especially in the tomato section about genetics and the eat all greens section about how to be self-sufficient in growing those and how nutritious they are, but I found half of the book really useless for me. The book seems a bit rushed for me, half impeccably done and half I could really do without. That being said I would still recommend it to serious growers because it still has new, valuable information from a skilled grower.
