About the Author
Lee Howard AMRAeS is a civilian aircraft engineer with the MoD. He trained as a helicopter engine and airframes engineer at RNAY Fleetlands and has since worked on a wide range of military helicopters including the Sea King. He is also and accomplished air-to-air photographer and co-author of Fleet Air Arm Helicopters since 1943 (2011), as well as a contributor to a number of specialist aviation magazines.

Best Haynes "manual" in some time

Haynes' 2014 lineup was a bit of a disappointment, with too many officially licensed novelty titles for my taste. I'm wondering if they've taken heed of their recent criticism, because this is one of the nicest Haynes titles I've purchased in some time. Although it contains some supporting material, including a brief history of rescue helicopters, an overview of the different Sea King variants, and a few accounts of rescue operations by Sea King crewman, the meat of this book is it's technical material. These include a number of technical diagrams from the original manuals, close-up photos of Sea Kings undergoing maintenance, and fairly detailed technical descriptions of the helicopter's systems. As expected from Haynes, there are some interesting "how it works" asides, including procedures for starting the helicopter and spreading the main rotor blades, a list of approved oils and lubricants, and how to pack a Personal Survival Pack.
The highlight of this book are the large number of photographs by the author, an experienced helicopter engineer, presenting a detailed interior and exterior walk-around of a HU Mk.5 SAR Sea King. This is the kind of stuff aviation geeks crave - there are close-up views of every control panel, and views of components ranging from the tail pylon locking mechanism, to the retractable spot lamp and the negative force gradient spring. It's truly fascinating to see one of these helicopters presenting in such detail. We're so used to seeing military aircraft as sleek, sexy machines, it's a revelation to see one with chipped paint, open access panels, drip trays, and panels festooned with traditional steam gauges and circuit breakers.
I have to praise Haynes for putting out a truly polished product this time. The photographs and diagrams are of excellent quality, the balance of historical and technical material feels just right this time, and the text is mercifully free of typos and editing errors. Being an officially licensed Royal Navy product, it contains some "look at us, aren't we great?" bits, but as a whole, this is a very solid look at the Westland Sea King and the men and women who operate and maintain it.
