A must for an Islamic home or school library

This collection surpasses any other item on the market. The images are gorgeous, the materials used are very high quality, and the questions are engaging and interesting. With the four main card decks (two easy and two hard, both having a classic and rapid game option), plus the bonus villains deck, you can play this for a LONG time before you would start to repeat questions. Gives an inkling of what the pioneers, and a little horse, went through to stay and survive

The target age group for PAINT is 9-12; but I really enjoyed the story, and I certainly think that teens and adults will get a lot from this book. Set in the late 1800s in North America, it follows a little horse through a series of owners. Paint was rescued by a Lakota boy, Noisy Horse, after her injured mother is attacked by wolves. She is a smart little filly and learns very quickly what her role is going to be as she lives with the Lakota people learning to hunt buffalo; and also learning how to be a boss mare. Life seems good, but history has a habit of disturbing life, and the white man moved in without care or regard of the different tribal lands and traditions of their new land, which resulted in the Indigenous people being moved out – often forcibly with guns pointed at them. Paint is separated from Noisy Horse when the soldiers move in to take the Lakota people to a government run reservation. From here she runs through a series of owners and horse sellers, both good and bad, until she ends up with a pioneer family on the Canadian Prairie. Paint’s ultimate fate was a bit ambiguous as it wasn’t very clear to me what happened to her after the big climax – my guesses could go either way – but would have liked closure to that thread.

Paints isn’t the only point of view given – some of the other character’s give their points of view of the events and at the end Noisy Horse returns to his homeland with his granddaughter and tries to explain to her what happened and why remembering the events is important even though she didn’t experience them. He does this so that the people’s traditions can live on in memory if not practice, and maybe understand how their current lifestyle came about. Younger readers may struggle a bit with the last chapter, as it often comes across as a little bit of a sermon on the loss of rights, but is true and needs to be told.

Author, Jennifer Dance, is a very gifted story teller and her written descriptions of the land, the harshness of the pioneer life, and how in their ignorance the early pioneers destroyed the balance of nature resulting in huge natural disasters are so good that the events just come alive on the pages. People and animals die in the story – that is a harsh fact of life – and add long droughts, and endless blizzards and you get an inkling of what the pioneers went through to stay and survive.

It is so easy to tell that Jennifer did whole lot of meticulous research into the story. The world changing events that happened both to nature and the indigenous peoples in the lifetime of one horse makes the mind boggle.

At the very end of the story is an appendix with a historical timeline, glossary and more detail about some of the events mentioned during the story.

Last year I read Jennifer’s debut novel Red Wolf and it was one of my top 10 reads for 2014. PAINT doesn’t quite grab me the same way – but I thoroughly recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical novels, or are trying to explain that period of time to younger readers.

Paint by Jennifer Dance is a touching story of a horse that lived in the 1800's. Paint was orphaned and found by a Lakota boy and their connection is deep. They are separated when the U.S. Cavalry raids the Lakota camp and Paint begin her journey with various owners, including settlers of the Canadian plains. Ultimately this book is about the destruction of the Aboringinal People's in Canada. From the start I loved Paint; a gentle, social and smart horse. Ms Dance descriptions of Paint and Noise Horse, her first owner was lyrical and the horrors of their brutal separation vividly described. The descriptions of the land, the harshness of the settler life were engrossing and real. An ex cellent, descriptive and gratifying read. I read this book in one sitting and thought about Paint for days after. Thank you Netgalley for giving me this opportunity to review this book.

An important book, that should be read by everybody.

Jennifer Dance wrote a book that manages to portray our history with a horse as the main character. The concept is amazing, and the execution of that concept is masterful. As a story about a horse, this is a great book, but there is so much more, and the book goes so much deeper, that it becomes a history lesson and a commentary on what we did (do) to the land and the people on it.

This poster is very nice. But for my three kids, is a bit too busy for them to focus. We have other posters from this publisher that the kids like and go to a lot, but think the examples next to each shape, coupled with the color surrounding each type of shape overloads them a bit, so they pass by it more often than not.

Great series of books

My 8 year old son has been reading this series of books since he was 6 and just loves them. He can't wait for the next book to be published. Highly reccommend for children who love to read about magical places and people.

Mysterious Island is a pretty good book.

Mysterious Island was a pretty good book. We liked the wizardry in it. We thought the title the Icky Bugs was quite funny. One great character was Princess Keeah because she was magical. We liked the magical rainbow stairs because they sounded so pretty. Galen Longbeard was another favorite. Lord Sparr was a great evil villain! We liked Neal. Maw was a cool spider troll. Most of us were surprised when he spun his trap. You must read this book. We think 8-25 year olds would like this book. This book would be enjoyed by people who like Magic Treehouse books. It is sort of like Lord of the Rings.

Great for kids!

I read the Secrets of Droon series aloud to my second graders! They love it! When Neal turns into a bug, they are delighted! My teacher friend recommended this series to me and we have a ball reading it. When I'm done reading it, a student gets to have the book for their own.

A baby hedgehog is out rooting around for “good things to eat.” Suddenly, storm clouds appear on the horizon, an owl hoots a warning, and soon the little critter is on the way home to Mama. The bottom half of each double-page spread is filled with beautiful, inky illustrations. The top half is further divided in two: the right side dedicated to English text and the left devoted to corresponding Mandarin Chinese (with the occasional exclamation point or question mark). Little ones will thrill at the hedgehog's ever-so-slightly perilous journey home, and older ones will enjoy figuring how the English words translate and vice versa. The hedgehog’s flight introduces the vocabulary of the natural world—clouds, wind, pine cones—as well as onomatopoeia and a fresh cultural reference: “Rain falls hard like soybeans.” Stylized animals and flora have good, distinct outlines and are filled with bright but still-natural colors. The final pages of the book supply a helpful glossary of tones and the story reproduced in both characters and pinyin. A companion board book entitled Squirrel Round and Round publishes simultaneously.

A sweet story with lovely illustrations to boot, developmentally pitch-perfect for older babies and toddlers. (Board book. 1-3)

Yang's simplified gouache paintings picture the spiky brown hedgehog crawling over green fields covered with spiraling grasses, windblown cattails, and fallen autumn leaves, the storm providing ample opportunities for onomatopoeia: "Crack! Baroom! The sky sounds angry." Chinese characters appear alongside the English narration, and a pinyin translation at book’s end allows readers to see how sound effects translate.

A great gift for any occasion....

This bilingual book would be the perfect Chinese New Years gift for a youngster or a nice surprise any time of the year. Young readers will follow the little hedgehog as he seeks shelter as a storm appears. You'll find a pinyin pronunciation key for the accompanying Chinese characters at the back of the book.

Young readers will enjoy the simple English/Chinese text and the illustrations.

CRACK BAROOM! Sound fun with adorable hedgehog

We checked out Squirrel Round and Round when my son was 15 months and he loved it. We bought Hurry Home, Hedgehog - he is now 18 months - and he likes this one even better. Yay Belle Yang! The baby makes sound effects along with the coming rain and has a little stuffed hedgehog that must accompany the readings. Now when it rains outside we say "ping pang" as the rain hits. Great fun! Plus great hugs when hedgehog finds his mommy.

My daughter loves hedgehogs. This book offers lovely illustrations and a sweetly simple storyline to engage younger readers and pique their interest in the accompanying Chinese text. Fun to read aloud in English, too!

Super book!!!

I bought my first copy of this book for my son. He is 9 years old but has significant learning disabilities that affect his ability to read. Trying to find books that he can feel successful at, that he enjoys, and are fun to read is harder than you might imagine. Most feel too young and he will refuse to read "baby books."

This book is PERFECT. Its longer than a simple story book so it feels "older" to him. Its the exact balance of being easy enough to read, hilarious, and the incredible illustrations support the story and the action, this cues him in on what the words are. He reads this book incessantly. His twin brother who doesn't have the delays and disabilities that my other son has also loves Mo and Joe.

I bought my second copy after seeing how much both of my boys enjoy reading it and donated it to the special education reading teacher at their school. The feedback from her has been nothing but terrific. Boys and girls, some with significant delays and some with none, in all the grades are loving this story. They are all anxiously waiting for the next book!!

Silly, Fun Easy Reader

This is probably going to be one you either hate or love as it's rather like Ook & Gluk by Dav Pilkey in that there is toilet humour and bad grammar ala caveman-speak. I thought it was adorable and know my sons would have loved it when they were around six or so. While the sentences read like "Dick and Jane", the three little chapters are silly and the artwork is cute. Each two-page spread is full-colour with one or two short narrative sentences and comic speech bubbles. This would be most appropriate for a first reader in the tradition of BOB books.

Great book for a young reader. My son is just getting comfortable with reading to himself and he loves this book. It is great humor and a good confidence builder for kids who doubt their reading ability.

This darling book is entertaining, heart felt and has wonderful life lessons. It provides a special way to teach children many important lessons that will help them throughout life. I read it with my 8 year old niece and she loved the characters, the pictures and the message. This book is truly rewarding for any age.

OK Grandpa, Tell Me Another...

This was exactly what I was looking for. It's not that I don't have an imagination myself. But sometimes when the grand kids or the neighborhood kids come over, my imagination finds the personality of a speed bump. So I can either grab Nana's Little Stories and read it aloud, or I can use these great fables as a format to launch into my own ad libs. Either way, it's a wonderful fall back.

This tall tale is about how Paul Bunyan worked in the United States. He was a big man and his ox was huge. He was a lumberjack who was very strong, yet kind and gentle. He made a river called the Mississippi and cleared the west. Paul and Babe are a great legend in America.
I thought this book was alright. It was a great version of this American legend. The illustrations weren't very vibrant, more dull. Don't let my opinion turn you away, read this book for yourself and see if you like it.

Excellent and Accessible Summary of Architectural Acoustics.

Ermann has put together a wonderful update to books for Architectural Acoustics. His book is intended for readers that have not been exposed to architectural acoustics before. The reader does not need an engineering or advanced math background. The illustrations and "infographics" are beautiful, concise and easy to understand. It is now my first choice to use when exposing new people, who don't have a strong math or engineering background, to the field of architectural acoustics.
