Damien Barlow is a paper-cut illustrator from Newscastle, based in Leeds, United Kingdom. He is an illustrator on the UK Greetings character team and works mainly within the children's market and in paper cutting and paper mechanics.

A lifelong lover of the arts, Elizabeth T. Gilbert earned a BA in English from the University of San Diego in 2003, where she also studied art and anthropology. For those who are experience and looking for a reference manual, this is it. It has technical information that you can refer to on just about anything you many want to know. From basic arc welding, trouble shooting, shielding gas data, weld design and geometry, etc.

If you do a lot of welding, this is a handy book to have.

A co-worker recommended i by this book and i found it to be both comprehensive and informative. I am an engineer and my co-worker is a welder and we both refer back to this book, all be it different sections. If i could just find a book like this on press brake operation i would be in heaven.

The text is illustrated with several hundred rare photographs, manufacturer's handbook data, scale line drawings, and specially commissioned color artwork.

About the Author
William A. Medcalf was born in Monmouth, Illinois. His interest in aviation began when he was a schoolboy during World War Two and continued with weekly visits to local airfields. He became a pilot at the age of 16. He has continued flying for almost 60 years (propeller-driven aircraft, jets and gliders).

Medcalf is the author of numerous technical documents, most unpublished as they were either classified by the US military or internal confidential documents.

His hobbies include flying, aviation history, automobile racing, and scale aircraft modeling.

Excellent Resource on the Ju-88

Yet another excellent book in this series by Classic Books. For those interested in German aircraft of World War II, this is well worth the investment.
Both Volume One and Volume Two on the Junkers Ju-88 are excellent. The early chapters of Volume One detail the evolution of the design and also of the Junkers manufacturer, and the later chapters provide excellent descriptions of the life of these aircraft in the same vein as other books in the series. The technical details are outstanding, and the line drawings and photographs are sharp and clear.
The well written text along with numerous photographs and drawings make this a superb resource.

This well-produced and heavily-illustrated book is an excellent summary of the Ju-88 family development. The author's perspective was also valuable and offered insights I've not seen in other books on this aircraft. Highly recommended!

What a dilema to figure out!

An intriguing story that really keeps the reader guessing. While not quite a mystery we get a peculiar situation that demands answers from us as spectators.

Rebecca is a teen girl recently abandoned by her abusive boyfriend. So, starting in the first chapter, she decides to call herself Caden. Hitching a ride with a boy named Gabriel, she goes to his condo and starts to live with him in return for cooking/cleaning.

Caden only feels comfortable wearing black, an estranged relationship with her mother, and no real friends to call on. So it is easy to take some sympathy with her plight. However, she is apparently an amazing cook. Too good, in my opinion, for a teenager! This girl makes some pretty fancy dishes. I have never known any teenagers to even come close to what she does. She is quickly attracted to Gabriel, despite his crappy attitude. Frankly, I think she is just asking for more trouble. But what kind of story would we have if she left?

Gabriel comes from money and is trying to avoid his parents so he snuck off to a condo they own in another state. He is a bit elusive, hot tempered and has a controlling side. But under that gruff exterior he seems like he MIGHT have a heart. Also underneath everything is a side to him few ever see...

At night Gabriel becomes Tom. While of the same body, the eyes change and Tom is only of the mentality of a young boy. Every night is is locked up in the bedroom, in the dark. Yet with Caden around he has his first friend. Is Tom a split-personality or something more?

Overall I liked this book. Trying to figure out what is going on with Tom/Gabriel kept me riveted to the pages. The manner in which we get the story keeps the reader wanting more and content with the pace. The romance is light to moderate. While there is a fast attraction and desire it is not the insta-love "this is my soul mate" mentality. Such a refreshing change of pace!

The thing that bothers my the most is that I do not see these characters as teenagers. How can Gabriel's parents let him leave on his own each summer? Why isn't Caden's parents doing more to keep her from living with strange men (well her mother does finally step in a little too late)?! They both cook really well and act and think more like they are in their early twenties. Not once did I get a "teen" feel from them.

Caden trying to figure everything out by herself also drives me a bit crazy. from tryng to solve the mystery and "fixing" Gabriel, to a certain situation at the end that really riled me up. What she does there is the closest thing to "teen" possible behavior we get.

The ending is a cliffhanger that really has me with even more questions. So now I must wait impatiently for the next book.

Engaging Love Triangle Between Two People

Teenaged Rebecca has just been dumped by her abusive first love. Her home life, with an emotionally absentee mother and father who’s just absent, isn’t any better. Existence in her drab small town has become so hopeless she’s poised to end it when Caden arrives to save her. Caden, however, isn’t a different person but a new identity Rebecca invents to create a fresh start. Further help—or harm—arrives shortly thereafter in the form of Gabriel, a charismatic-but- volatile rich kid for whom she instantly falls. The source of their connection quickly becomes apparent when it’s revealed Gabriel also has a second identity as an innocent man-child named Tom who only comes out at night. This unique love triangle amongst only two people (Or is it three or four?) makes up the central conflict of E.V. Fairfall’s affecting second novel, Sleeping Tom.

Fairfall, also a photographer and graphic artist, has immense gifts when it comes to invoking all five senses of her readers. The cooking scenes, practically the only time Caden displays self confidence of any type for much of the book, do a phenomenal job of using vivid aromas and well-timed crackles to make the reader realize both Caden and Gabriel’s potential for greatness. Conversely, Fairfall’s use of rain, cold, light, and dark creates an atmosphere spot-on in revealing the internal challenges both main characters face from the storms constantly brewing within their troubled minds.

Fairfall’s characters also prove a strongpoint. The pace of the evolution of Caden from mousy and self-loathing to assertive and somewhat sensible rings true, as does Gabriel incorporating more of Tom’s sweetness as the story—and his trust for Caden—progresses. Ringing truer still is Fairfall’s use of Caden’s point of view to make her mother a villainous character despite the mother never really doing anything villainous. If such a compliment seems dubious, think again, as the muddled, non-objective point of view being reflected is that of a teenager. In terms of supporting characters, brother-sister combo Face and Angelica, as well as their kind-hearted mother Cassandra, stand out to provide respite for both Caden and the reader when her story seems hopeless.

The PG-13 language and PG-romantic scenes of Sleeping Tom make the book well-suited to the younger audience it feels intended for. The central message of remaining strong through a broken heart and accepting the flaws of others is a positive one, as well. Although such a genre isn’t one I generally seek out, I greatly enjoyed reading this book and look forward to the sequel.

Not your usual YA Romance...

Honestly, I'm not sure how I truly feel about this book. I liked it, yes, but there was a little something missing. I don't know what. It was a romance though the romance was as light as it was conflicted. But again, I liked this book.

Rebecca/Caden is as lost as Gabriel/Tom when they first meet each other. They're actually the same kind of messed up from different sides of the tracks. They just don't know it. I liked the suspense of Gabriel/Tom that kind of pulled us through, yet toward the end I just wanted to know what was going on. At this point, I wasn't surprised by anything Gabriel or Tom did. They'd become predictable, until Caden decided to play "god" and then things got interesting. But now it's the end of the book and I'm like Aah! What's going to happen next? How are they going to fix this? It'll be interesting to find out.

I liked Fairfall's writing and the whole vibe of this book. Though there were light moments, the entire book was bathed in darkness and pain and I guess I was just in the mood for a book like this, because it worked for me. Both of the MCs had parental issues and as different as their situations were, they could also relate. Then there was the relationship drama. I also felt they could relate here as well. For Caden, I felt she was clearly the victim. For Gabriel, I felt he was also a victim even though circumstances pointed toward him being the culprit.

Overall, this book was good though not great. You have to have a little patience for this one because it's not fast paced by any means. Also, beware. There's a cliffhanger! I like cliffhangers though and I'm interested to see what happens next!

” has the feel of one of my old favorite tween series

GENRE: TWEEN FICTION—Book Two of the Madeleine Richards Series, “Problems in Paradise,” has the feel of one of my old favorite tween series, Babysitters’ Club only with Christian overtones. The episodic feel to the story-line was less noticeable in the first book of this series, but that is as it should be. From the first page, the characters are familiar, and it takes less time to warm up to the heroine. However, readers will be happy to find that, while Maddy has adjusted to the changes life has thrown at her, her adventurous spirit has not diminished. The next chapter in her life has her traveling to paradise. Against the lush, tropical setting of the island of Hawaii, and once again accompanied by her best friend, Hannah, Maddy’s natural nosiness leads her into an adventure that puts her faith to the test. Her struggle with her understanding of faith is realistic and handled wisely by the author. Young readers love series and will definitely be looking forward to the next book.

Problems in Paradise...good read!

How exciting to continue with this series...Maddy and Hannah get to go on Maddy's mom and new step dads honeymoon...to Hawaii! The girls meet a new friend from New York while in 'Paradise' and of course the mystery begins! It was great to see how she called upon The Lord for help. What a great example for the target age reader...Tweens! Being able to watch God work in His time is great for Tweens to be able to learn to relate to our Heavenly Father! Note: my 12 yo daughter read this book and thoroughly enjoyed it! She also thought the flow was much easier to follow in this book than book 1. This book was gifted to me in exchange for my honest review.

On a Wing and a Prayer.

Maddy and her friend Hannah are surprised to accompany Maddy's mother and new step father on their honeymoon trip to Hawaii. In the coarse of making friends with a girl from New York, trouble finds the two friends once again. Maddy and her mother continue to rely on faith to get through their trials. This story is geared for a younger genre than I am used to reading and I found much of the adult dialog awkward. If you like a middle grade Christian fiction, this story is right up your alley. I am a firm believer in the main principle of this story, namely that prayer are answered, albeit not often as quickly in real life as in this story.

Loved it.. til the end

Asa is a sarcastic, smart and hard working girl who just can't seem to catch a break. Trouble follows her around like a tail, even when she has the best of intentions. She's been arrested for protesting with her hippie, psychic mom, has moved more times than she can count, is hanging on by a thread at both school and whichever job she can keep. Add to that teachers who aren't supportive but condescending, and a police officer with an evil soul stalking her, and you can imagine the helpless frustration she must be feeling. I even let out a groan of frustration myself! Her only friend, Walker, has been supportive, to a point, but has baggage of his own.
Aja's bright spot comes where she least expects it, in a job that connects her with others, and helping out has never cost her so much! Karma's a beast, and when Aja finally sets some good into motion, it starts heading her way again.
Definitely a great story, until nearly the end, that is..I'm all for a happy ending, but this one does a 180 from the tone of the entire first three quarters of the book. Not only does Aja's life turn completely around, everyone she touched has a similar experience. It's as if Miley Cyrus turned into Snow White, it's entirely too abrupt, without a natural change, and it just doesn't fit. I do admire the idea that everyone can change for the better, and even Aja's new idea to bring the two sides of her life together to help each other, but again, it's abrupt and ultimately unrealistic to the story.
With a better ending, this would be 5 stars, I liked it that much. However, it felt as if another author stepped in and wrote the end, and I ended up feeling aggravated and cheated out of Aja's true story.

Snow Globe- Shake it up and see what chaos will fall. Aja Harmon is no stranger to trouble. It follows her around as her hippie mom moved her year after year following a just cause or wanderlust.

Its Aja’s senior year of high school, she just wants to graduate but finds trouble at every turn. She was working at Abercrombie & Fitch but loses her job when she sticks up for a child being abused by its mother. Having a strong moral compass she finds she makes decisions that often lead her into unintentional trouble.

When other people’s perceptions and judgments become too much, she makes a bad decision that leads her onto a path of karmic retribution.

Haunted by past situations her mother forced her into led to a police record; arrests for protesting the cause of the month. Her mother is a professional psychic complete with the sign on their front lawn. Her reputation casts a wary shadow over Aja’s life and dealings with the people of the Texas town. Aja mistakenly thinks that fleeing the state to California will end all of her troubles.

When a corrupt and mentally unstable cop preys on the troubled teens of the area Aja becomes an unwilling heroine in not only saving herself but also a group of teens. She brings to light an injustice that has been happening for years and changes the perceptions of the same people that couldn’t look past her police record before.

Snow Globe is a fantastic coming-of-age story showcasing the perspective that a teen with psychic abilities is not all what it seems. Aja shuns that part of her life, and is embarrassed by not only her mother’s profession, but her lack of normalcy. She longs to be normal like all of the other kids, but contradictorily she also knows deep down she doesn’t really want to be like them.

This story delves deep into the teenage abyss of an unknown future, finding one’s true identity and acceptance of being different than everyone else. It also discusses the consequences of one’s actions, not only through the justice system, but also within relationships. Snow Globe is entertaining, and funny, and endearing all wrapped up in a glittery round package. Any teen, or adult for that matter, will enjoy this story and root for Aja to find her happiness and finally accept who she really is.

Snow Globe needed more of the paranormal element!

Snow Globe by Jeanne Skartsiaris is a young adult paranormal novel (sort of) set in Dallas, Texas. Aja (pronounced Asia) Harmon is eighteen years old and finishing up her senior year of high school. Her mother has moved her around every year of her academic career (which has made it rough on Aja). The principal and some of the teachers have made judgements of Aja based on her file, appearance, and her mother’s occupation as a psychic (she is the real deal). Aja decides if they think she is bad she will do something bad. She then steals $40 from Mrs. Dempsey’s purse (the English teacher who dislikes Aja). When the police (Officer Clay) arrive at her house to arrest her, Aja sneaks out (and hurries to work). Aja meets Walker who offers her a lift to her job at Abercrombie and Fitch. Aja gets fired when she confronts a customer who is abusing her daughter (the store sides with the mother). Aja gets a new job at Golden Leaves Retirement Community (she is saving up money to move to California after she graduates) thanks to her new friend Walker. Aja will be a waitress in the resident dining room. The one person that Aja has in her corner (besides her mother) is the school counselor Mrs. Burnett. She believes in Aja and is encouraging her (and helping her).

Aja was not sure she would enjoy working with the elderly, but the residents surprise her (except for one who seems to dislike her). Aja also makes a friend in Walker whose grandparents are residents at Golden Leaves and with Mr. Jenson (who believes Aja looks like his wife). Aja, unfortunately, has caught the attention of (corrupt and lecherous) Officer Clay. When jewelry goes missing at Golden Leaves will Aja be able to prove that she was not the culprit? Aja will have to fight the system and prove to people there is more to her than meets the eye. Aja has special abilities (like her mother) but they scare her. Will Aja ever be able to accept her abilities (and who she is)?

Snow Globe is a good novel, but I found it a little lacking. I wanted more of the paranormal element. The novel teaches a lesson about make snap judgements about people (about perceptions based on appearances). The novel is written well and engaging. There is a lot going on in the book, but I liked how the teenagers interacted with the elderly (and that they learned from each other). I give Snow Globe 4 out of 5 stars. Snow Globe has a lovely ending that wraps up all the storylines. Snow Globe is a young adult novel, but can be read by all adults.

Not What I Expected, but Still a Great Book

When I bought "Spies and Shuttles," I thought it was about the classified Department of Defense (DoD) Space Shuttle missions that successfully deployed several "spy satellites" until the 1986 Challenger disaster forced DoD to move its missions back onto expendable launch vehicles. If I had paid more attention to the subtitle ("NASA's Secret Relationships with the DoD and CIA"), I might have realized that my expectations were false.

First, the Space Shuttle doesn't even appear until over halfway into the book. Up to that point, the story is about the NASA/DoD programmatic, administrative and technical relationships on the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Skylab programs, as well as a vast array of unmanned satellites such as Tiros and Landsat. This is interesting stuff, true, but it's not what the title led me to expect. Second--and I always do this immediately with any spaceflight book I buy--I checked the index for the names of certain classified spacecraft that I know were launched on the Shuttle. I found none of them--not even the one or two that are in the public record (although not really declassified). This quote from page 240 pretty much captures the level of detail included for DoD Shuttle missions: "The DoD also flew its final eight dedicated missions from December 1988 until December 1992. The first five reportedly launched imagery or signals intelligence satellites."

While I was expecting, and hoping for, an entire book expounding on the topic of those two sentences, "Spies and Shuttles" is not such a book. Of course, I realize most of the information on DoD Shuttle flights remains highly classified. Nevertheless, I expected something along the lines of "Deep Black: Space Espionage and National Security" or "Guardians: Strategic Reconnaissance Satellites" in terms of "newly declassified" technical detail on these missions.

However, with that said, and judging it by what it IS and not by what I thought it would be, "Spies and Shuttles" is an extremely good book that fills in gaps in the historical record of how NASA and the U.S. military and intelligence communities worked together behind the scenes since virtually the inception of spaceflight. On its own terms, "Spies and Shuttles" deserves a place in every space enthusiast's bookcase.

Great research, terrible integration of the facts

This book could have been great.
Five plus stars for the extensive research on the DOD influence on NASAs programs.
If I was grading a thesis it would get an A+ - it provides a comprehensive description of NASA/DOD interactions from the birth of the space age through the shuttle.

The bad news is that the author makes little effort in interpreting the data he has. Most of the text reads like paraphrases of the footnotes. Readers are left to figure out what vague phrases like "strategic operational needs, imagery intelligence platform" were (yes I know, but it surely limits the audience). The same is true for the listing of each sensor on spacecraft - what was the purpose - why did DOD object - what were they doing at the time? Halfway through the book you are left wondering what was the purpose of including every detail of every DOD or NASA meeting. By the end it was simply exhausting. It felt like the author saying, "I found this out so you should read about it."

The notes and bibliography are extensive. Yet it's pretty telling that there's not a single interview listed. The book would have been helped tremendously if the author had talked to some of the players involved (or at least had Jeff Richelson give him some context.) Given most of these systems were over 40 years old quite a few of them have been declassified or at least written about. It could have made a much richer book.

All it would have taken to make this a spectacular book was in each chapter for the author to step back and say, "here's what the CIA/NSA/NRO/Navy, etc. were trying to collect in this timeframe and here's why they objected to these NASA programs." (The information is publicly available. The author has the sources in his bibliography.)

That said, while not a history for a general audience, those who are familiar with DOD jargon, understand the Intelligence Community and are interested in NASA/DOD interactions will get a lot out of the book.

So sweet and beautiful!

Such an absolute precious book. I bought it for my husband for Christmas as he follows Norbert on Instagram. He's been wanting to start trying to have children and I thought this would be the perfect way to tell him I was ready. He loved it!!! Beautifully done.

This was a fabulously hilarious Sheep family seder young children will love!

Everyone in the house was busy, busy, busy preparing for seder. The house was clean, the table was set, and Mama Sheep, Papa Sheep, Hannah Sheep, and little Noah Sheep were ready to celebrate. Around the table they gathered, ready to begin their Sheep family seder. Wait a minute, not so fast, there was someone at the door and it was Grandma. “Mama set another place. / Papa found an extra seat. / Hannah squeezed to make more space, / thrilled to have a guest to greet.” Wait a minute, not so fast, there was someone at the door and it was Uncle Sol.

The scramble was on, but once again the family gathered ‘round the table to begin their seder. Wait a minute, not so fast, there was someone at the door and it was Grandpa. “Mama set another place. / Papa found an extra seat. / Hannah squeezed to make more space, / thrilled to have a guest to greet.” The Four Questions were sung and the “afikomen disappeared,” but then Danny Sheep arrived, and then Sharon. Just how many Sheeps were going to show up at the seder?

This was a fabulously hilarious Sheep family seder young children will love. The more the merrier seemed to be the phrase of the day as more and more Sheep family members show up unannounced. The seder festivities continued as well as the laughs. Little Noah, who started with a little yawn, ended up fast asleep in Mama Sheep’s arms by the time the seder was over. Children will be able to spot the seder plate and the matzah and watch as the contents are shifted to the plates. This is one silly seder tale that’s not to be missed!

Hilarious good fun! I really needed a glossary to fully understand the book.

SUMMARY: Hannah and Noah's family is getting ready for Passover. They are ready to sit down for their meal, just the four of them, but another member of the family shows up. This happens several times before they are able to complete their traditional celebration. It is late By this time and Noah becomes so tired, he falls asleep at the table.

ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations appear to be created with paint. They are colorful and lively, adding to the sense of fun.

THE GOOD: This book was hilarious. Every time the family thought they would be able to complete their Seder, another sheep would turn up. Papa sheep would have to find another seat (even getting so desperate as to use a lawn chair) and everyone would have to squeeze in. I love the little corner picture of Noah on each page saying, "And Noah gave a tiny yawn." His yawn grew bigger each time. This addition is a fun way to allow kids to participate when they see the picture of Noah. But most important of all, is the sense of family you get from reading the story.
THE NOT AS GOOD: I really really really needed a glossary and even a little explanation about Passover. I did not understand some of the story because I did not understand words such as karpas, afikomen, charoset, maror, and matzah. This would have been a wonderful opportunity for the author to educate those of us who do not celebrate Passover about this very important celebration.

AGE RECOMMENDATION: Ages 4-8

My daughter (5) and I love this book

My daughter (5) and I love this book! She likes to read the part about the youngest child, whose yawns get bigger as the night goes on. The book is good for beginning readers as well as the sentences repeat and younger ones can help their parents "read." I highly recommend to any families who celebrate passover or who have a lot of family members show up for dinner any time of the year.
