For the past several decades Cherry Hill has created scaled-down versions of traction engines—and not just run-of-the-mill types, but elaborate Victorian flights of fancy. She has created almost 20 models over the 60-year period since her father gave her an old lathe from his agricultural machinery business. One of the most impressive aspects of Cherry's work is that all her engines are fully working, and what comes out of her workshops in Worcestershire and Florida is perfection, both in terms of design and craftsmanship. Every last part, even tiny chain links, is made in the workshop from metal stock. No parts are bought in. Once completed, all her models are given away: early ones to friends and family and later ones to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Each model typically occupies 7,000 hours' work, and Cherry's staggering efforts have been rewarded with the highest honors, including nine gold medals and an MBE from the British Queen for Services to Model Engineering. Here, for the first time, the fruits of her illustrious career are displayed in all their intricate glory.

A wonderful book on a great subject.

I had seen an article with photos in Live Steam Magazine on Cherry Hill's models and found more about her work on the Internet. When Amazon offered this book months ago I bought it even though it took more than half a year to get. It was more than worth the wait. It is a wonderful book with outstanding photos and text. It gives insight to a level of craftsmanship that really becomes a form of art. My thanks and congratulations to Mr. Carpenter and of course to Cherry Hill.

For those who love the presentation of exquisite models, this is your book.
I have seen some of Cherry's work in Model Engineer Magazine , but David Carpenter has
done the model fraternity a tremendous service by recording the work of Cherry Hill in detailed descriptions and up close photographs.
These unusual models are all one of a kind and show the life work of this famous British builder.
Not only is this a collectable book that exhibits the highest level of craftsmanship , but the beautiful colored pages
emphasize the achievements of Cherry and her work.

Jude Welton originally trained as a child psychologist specialising in autism. Celebrate the difference...

This informative, important book, written by Jude Welton and illustrated by Jane Telford, for ages 2+, is one that everyone should read.

Written in rhyme it documents a loving family and how they cope with autism in their special little boy. They understand that he is different from other little guys and they make beautiful provisions for those differences. Together, mom and Tomas map out his day so he won't be scared or worried about what is to come. Both she and his dad read to him in a quiet, gentle manner to sooth the assault from the world around him through bustling crowds, loud noises and improper foods that he could ingest to make his tummy sore. They guide his day for success with proper toys (he especially loves his train that goes round and round, and playing with tiny wee toys, and his trampoline time that brings him to giggles). They create a calm atmosphere so he can be more relaxed and know in his heart, that no matter what comes his way he is loved, safe and precious to them. If there is any deviation from the plan, which may cause stress or upset, they immediately inform Tomas so he won't start flapping.

His faithful companion Flynn, his best friend in a doggie body, is always there for him to comfort and give him constant love and interaction. Tomas is surrounded by positive, intentional care which greatly benefits the quality of his life and puts a smile on both his face and his parents'.

The illustrations add so much to the storyline. Some are playful, some are serious, but all give you a perfect visual of a day in the life of Tomas, a little boy who is different, but "loves fun and friendship - just like you!"

Highly recommend this read for anyone lucky enough to have a quirky child in their life.

I was a little worried about reading this book to my newly diagnosed HFA son (5) as we don't label him, we don't mention he's different as a negative and never use the term autistic in front of him as we feel he's normal, if a little quirky, and don't want to burden him with a label or shove him into a box he won't get out of. So I read this book by myself first, and really enjoyed how there are no labels! Tomas is just what he is. A boy who likes trains, small toys, his dog and so on. It was refreshing and a relief it wasn't a book putting autistic children in THAT `special' box, rather accepting them as being normal... with a little quirk or two.

So I then read this story with his older sisters (10 and 7) who are aware he has autism and have had it explained to them. They loved this book and said it was cute how it was about a boy like their brother. Showing it was okay to be quirky as it was just a different level to normal. So thumbs up there too that siblings can recognise it and see it as a good thing.

After that I read it to my train loving son and... he loved it. He could relate to Tomas as he too loves trains. He covered his ears for the loud noises too, he repeated the silly sounding words and loved the interaction with Flynn the dog.

Summary - this is a well presented book, a good read for the whole family of a quirky child and a refreshing story that doesn't label a child. Highly recommend it to families who have at least one autistic child in their life as it might help explain things to some people (children and adults) while reaffirm it's okay to be like this to others.

A Great Children's Book About Autism

I picked this book up for review by the publisher and want to express that all opinions on this review are solely mine and not influenced by the publisher in any way.

This is a great book to teach young children about autism without getting too technical. I feel as if children in their younger days can be very judgmental of other kids who are different from the norm and I feel like this book should be read to children to let them have a grasp of what autism is really like for kids who have it. I personally have not met anyone with autism spectrum before but I could definitely see myself reading this book to younger kids so they have a better understanding of what autism really is visually and through storytelling. The story line covers a lot of topics from digestive issues to noises affecting children with autism but is a way that children will understand it.

The artwork is cute and attractive. Not too realistic, not too cartoony either. I liked the color tones and it blended well with the story. The rhymes were well done and flowed well throughout the narrative. This book was such a joy to read and I hope there are more books out there like this that can teach children about different types of disorders without being too overly descriptive but with just enough information so they will understand. The most authoritative Decision Analysis book

The core decision analysis community had been waiting for this book for many years. Amazon ran out of stock the day that they mailed the book to those who pre-ordered it. These comments are for readers who are interested in decision analysis but may be not that familiar with the authors or the book background. The list of its forty chapters is included at the end of these comments.

Ronald Howard is a key founder of the discipline and his writing, teaching and application of decision analysis has shaped the discipline. In addition, he is a most clear, logical and even fun to read writer. Ali Abbas is a major decision analysis scholar and innovator, and the Director of CREATE at USC.

This book is the outgrowth of the course notes that Ronald Howard developed and used for teaching decision analysis at Stanford over more than forty year. It is great that "the manuscript" is now published in an extended and enriched version.

The forty chapters of the book cover a wide range of interrelated concepts and techniques. A subset of the chapters was designed to be understood by a general audience. The book includes many other chapters that go deep into the underpinnings of the discipline. The book is written as a textbook but it is also a reference book.

The book uses simple examples carefully designed to learn a lot from them and logically builds a network of useful concepts from the "five rules of actional thought" (Howard's axiomatic basis for the discipline.) It includes a few exercises at the end of each chapter but it does not include a bibliography.

Amazon does not include (at this time) the list of chapters or the recommendations by the authors for different types of readers, but you can see them at the Pearson's sites that will be distributing the paperback Global Edition. It captures not only the technical foundations of decision analysis, it captures Professor Howard's expertise in teaching the material. He knows how to make ideas simple and clear. This is an exciting look at Dustin Pedroia, one of “baseball’s most unlikely stars” ...

For Dustin it was always baseball, baseball, baseball! He had a tiny bat and he “swung that bat at all kinds of things─tin foil, Ping-Pong balls, anything that looked round.” That sort of thing doesn’t go over particularly well in a house so eventually he made his way onto a T-ball league. Dustin’s coach was none other than his mother, Debbie. Her height never stopped her from playing sports and it wasn’t going to stop her son either. Dustin’s father spent a lot of time teaching Dustin and his brother Brett the basics of the game. He also imparted the lesson that “being able to catch and throw a ball was just as important as batting.” It looked like Dustin learned that lesson well.

Dustin was an all-around athlete and also played football and basketball. He was only “five feet three inches tall,” but he didn’t let that stop him. Dustin decided that baseball would be his game and left behind the others to concentrate on it. You’ll read about those amazing stats he amassed, stats that got everyone looking at the young shortstop. There was still that height problem and Woodland’s Coach Rinaldi “didn’t think Dustin was tall enough to play in college or on an MLB team.” His parents respectfully disagreed and his mother told the coach that “He’s going to prove all of you wrong if somebody just gives him a chance.” You’ll read all about that chance and much more about Dustin Pedroia, an amazing athlete.

Nice assortment of level C readers.

These are great little 5"x5" beginner books! Just like my kindergarteners use for guided reading at school. Each book is 8 pages with one sentence a page and full color pictures. We choose 3 a night for my kindergarteners to read aloud and with 40 little books they enjoy having a variety to choose from. I also like they come in a box to keep them together for easy storage.

Fantastic beginning books for a Pre-K student. We read 1-2 books a night and she is definitely developing her sight words. Pictures tied into the sentences help her figure out the words to read as well. Love the set.

About the Author

Paul Parker is a UK-based author specializing in historic motor racing and motorsport photography. He has published books with Haynes, Karl Ludvigsen, and Palawan Press. Paul also works regularly with top UK magazines including Octane, Classic and Sports Car, Autosport, and Motorsport.

The Klemantaski Collection consists of over 500,000 motor racing and related automotive photographs and is one of the largest and most varied libraries of its kind anywhere in the world. Amazing Photography- Great Book!

If you are a motorsports fan of any kind, this is a book you need to have on your bookshelf. I was astonished at the quality of the photographs featured by Louis Klemantaski. Nearly every one of the 272 pages contains crisp clear images dating from the 1930's to the late 1960's. This book does a wonderful job of pulling Klemantaski's images together of racing's golden age. I highly recommend this to any racing fanatic or anyone interested in racing history and pictures. This book was well shipped and wrapped in plastic, reassuring that I was the first to open it!
I received this book in exchange for an honest review. Regardless, all opinions are my own.

Probibly the finest collection of European racing images from the mid '30s ...

Keemantaski's pictures were crisp and evocative and this book does them justice.
Often the subject of the picture is secondary to the supporting cast.Probibly the finest collection of European racing images from the mid '30s to the late '60s found in one book.
The short commentary on most pages and random personal photographs add to its flavor. Clearly the sport is far more then just the cars. The human is not ignored by Klenantaski.
This is not just a very good book about racing but a very good book by any standards.

We’ve seen several reviews of the new book, Klemantaski: Master Motorsports Photographer. As far as we are concerned, none of them we've seen really do the book justice.

First of all let me say that this is a great book. A great book. Anyone even slightly familiar with the history of racing in the mid-century has heard of Louis Klemantaski, arguably the most artistic photographer of the continental road racing scene in those years. And in those years photographers had incredible access to the track, certainly dangerous but able to produce wonderful photos.
As the press release says, in the book’s handsomely packaged 272 pages you will certainly “see the golden age of racing through hundreds of famed motorsports photographer Louis Klemantaski's greatest images, including many that have never been previously published.”
And there is more. To me, what makes this book really stand out are the captions and accompanying text. Although brief and never taking anything away from the photographs themselves, the beautifully written captions alone are worth the price of admission. Peter Parker, a UK-based author, provides wonderful information about each photo and puts it in context of what was going on at the time. It’s a great package and we cannot recommend this book highly enough.

A Textbook For Would Be Engineers

This textbook was required for class and I used the Amazon Rental program for it (which is great, btw).

The book reads a bit wordy, ideas are a bit repetitive, but you will learn some new things. One semester only covered half the book so that's all I can say about it so far.

Good read! I learned a lot.

My expectations were low getting this book, but I learned a great deal about the history of these terrific timepieces. I would recommend it to anyone who's in the process of purchasing one of these high end watches. I'd be willing to bet that the majority of Rolex owners don't know any of the information that is in this book.
