Really great book but....there are a few issues

For years I heard how this was _the_ book to buy if you were into Elizabethan costuming and wanted authentic items that could be documented. The book is good for that, and I enjoyed the style that Ms.Arnold wrote it in.
But I have two major gripes with the book-both regarding the quality of graphics and images in it.
First off-in the whole book there are only about 5 pages in color. The rest of it-including hundreds of portraits, examples of extant clothing pieces and pieces of embroidery were all in black and white. I complain about that because, with so many of the portraits quoted as examples it would help if they could be seen clearly. (Many of them are too dark to have reproduced well, and a few are quite horrible.) And the photographs....
If they could reprint this book and possibly include more color plates it would be a much much more valuable resource. As it stands now, it is a good source, but not all that I could have hoped for. Instead I have begun a search for color reproductions of the portraits cited in the book. A long tedious job but one that I think over all will make it a much more solid resource for my needs.

Such An Amazing Resource!

For the historical costumer focused on 16th century clothing, this is the "bible" hands down. Big, expensive, and filled with the usual detail that is the hallmark of Janet Arnold, this is one very worthwhile investment for the serious costumer. This book has one tiny drawback, in that it focuses entirely on women's fashion in the 16th century as viewed through the wardrobe accounts of Queen Elizabeth I and some of her contemporaries. Therefore, it has nothing to say on the topic of men's clothing, which is an unfortunately neglected aspect of 16th century research.
Much of Janet Arnold's most important contributions to the costuming community are addressed in this book, making it extremely valuable. She presents each section with satisfying detail, raising very few questions that remain unanswered. The photographs accompanying the text are also invaluable, as many of them are not available in other books or to the general public for viewing. If only there were more color images...
If you can afford the book, you won't regret buying it.

The Best source for the Wardrobe of Elizabeth 1st

This book is amazing. Huge, and packed full of information. An essential refernce work if you are seriously considering doing anything with elizabethan fashion. The author has poured years of scholarship into this work and it shows. It's not really a coffee table picture book. Instead it is full of carefully culled facts for the serious student or anybody curious about 'real' English Tudor costume.

About the Author
Wendy L. Moss, Ph.D., has over 30 years’ experience working with children and families as a psychologist in schools, clinics, hospitals, and private practice. She has been appointed a fellow in the American Academy of School Psychology and has also been awarded the status of a “Diplomate in School Psychology” by the American Board of Professional Psychology. She is the author of several books, including Being Me: A Kid’s Guide to Boosting Confidence and Self-Esteem. She lives in the New York City area.

For more than 20 years, Susan A. Taddonio, D.P.T., has worked with children and families as a physical therapist in schools, homes, and private practice. She was inspired to go into the field of physical therapy by her uncle, who had polio. As a child, she saw him perform ordinary as well as extraordinary tasks—such as doing construction jobs—even when using crutches. She believed that his mental attitude helped him excel and be successful, and she hopes to help kids find that same positive attitude. She lives in Lloyd Harbor, New York.

Great Tool for Parents and Teachers of Children from Multicultural and Multiracial Families

As a homeschooling Latina mom who is married to a non-Latino, I loved that my kids could totally relate to this story. My two dark-haired, olive-skinned kids look so different from their blonde, blue-eyed dad and all of their cousins on his side of the family. I very much appreciated how this sweet story helps kids appreciate - and even celebrate - diversity within their own families. This book works well with lessons and unit studies of cultural diversity, heritage, fitting in, bullies, and so much more.
If you are looking for a book that helps young children understand diversity (both within their families and around the world), this is a must read!

Great book about diversity helps children take pride in their heritage and roots

"El Tesoro Mas Valioso / The Most Valuable Treasure" approaches the subject of diversity and pride in our cultural heritage from a child's point of view as Abi and Tony Cool are faced with questions about being different at school. Miami Cool teaches the children to embrace those things that make them different and to give more importance to the similarities that they share with others. It's a book that goes beyond talking about acceptance and diversity and focuses on love at the same time that in helps Latino children take pride in their heritage and their roots.

This is a great book to read together as a family and to spark those conversations that will open up opportunities to discuss differences and highlight similarities. The book is also easy enough for children to read on their own and it's a story that many children will relate to. I love that it's written in Spanish and English which makes it a great resource for bilingual children and children who are learning Spanish.
This book is an invaluable resources to help children understand the concept of diversity in a natural way and would be perfect to read at home or to include in the classroom library.

Teaching Children Through Literacy

As a mother of two boys from Dominican decent I was so PROUD to see a book that was created with MY children in mind. It's not very often that my boys can relate to the characters in the story that we read aloud. It was great the way they related to the characters, the problem and they LOVED the solution. I would definitely recommend this book as a read aloud and a follow up writing activity for children. It's a perfect way for children to celebrate their differences and unique self. It's also great to use as conversation starters. Many times children are not so proud of their culture of the way they look due to bullying. This book really takes the time to allow children to figure out that it really is okay to be DIFFERENT! You can catch the rest of my review over at MommyTeaches.com

About the Author

Ron Marasco began his airline career in 1956 as a flight engineer with Pan Am. From the beginning of the 747 operation until 1984, he held senior positions, including vice president of maintenance and engineering associated with all phases of 747 maintenance. After leaving Pan Am, he continued his involvement as senior vice president of operations for Flying Tigers and was the operations executive who spearheaded the start-up and FAA certification of Atlas Air and Polar Air Cargo, all of which had 747 cargo fleets.

He received the Air Transportation Association’s prestigious Nuts and Bolts Award for outstanding professional leadership and management skills in airline maintenance and engineering spanning a career of forty years, and in celebration of his pioneering work in introducing the 747, into commercial service.

He currently is a Pan Am Historical Foundation board member and lives with his wife, Barbara, in East Hampton, New York.

A must read for all who love aviation, and all those who confront problems head on and cure them with brains & teamwork!!!

Great read about multiple problems surrounding the introduction of the "magnificent" B747 aircraft into commercial airline service, commencing in January, 1970. The author, Ron Marasco was indeed the "Pan Am" point man from the start that headed and directed the selected Pan Am team of maintenance technicians chosen to aid the introduction of the B747 into Pan Am passenger service. But......this story reaches out much further then the small band of these Pan Am folk. This is a story about technical problems overcome by scores of dedicated people, men & women from the Boeing Aircraft Company, Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Engines, Pan American World Airways and all the initial B747 aircraft operators across the world!!!! Thanks to the airmen, the maintenance crews, the engineering folks, the production line personnel at Boeing & P&W that worked so hard to deliver to the world traveling public, the safest aircraft ever built, "The Queen of the Skies"...the B747. This is truly a "human" story worth telling to all in the aviation community, and beyond, as to what teamwork, hard work, dedication, brotherhood, capable leadership can do when focused and motivated to completing the mission!!! More credit should go to the operational crews and related matintenance personal who had to operate under diffficult saituations

Most interesting awesome especially since the airlines went from the 220 seat 707 to the giant 464 seat 747.
The 747 was the first commercial airplane that went into service without first going through military air force experiences to take some of the bugs out. Much of the 747 problems were that caused by various engine difficulties that took time and expense to correct and caused multiple engine failures on a few flights. It appears to me the writer was lenient in reporting operational problems and high costs associated. More should have been written as to the stress and operational situations crews had to operate under. Don't like that a computer replaced the Flight Engineer.

The supernatural is closer than you think.

I enjoyed this collection and felt the author did a great job of making the reader stop and think about just how close the other world is to this one. The tales are believable, mostly I think because they are eerie without being horrific and the author isn't trying to scare you to death. Rather the reader is left with a few goose bumps and may think twice about any close encounters they may have written off as mere coincidence. I think this book will appeal to a lot of readers and I urge you to grab a copy.

All these tales are easily believable. And once past that point, some become quite scary as well. All people interested in the paranormal will find this compilation of stories refreshingly straightforward, edited impeccably, and never before told as far as I've am aware. I highly recommend investing the time to read through this thought provoking book.

My son got this book as a Christmas present and it was by far one of the best gifts that he got. We have read it 3 times already. About the Author
Sandra Bradley lives near Kingston, Ontario, with her husband and three children. This is her debut children’s book.

Sara Palacios is the recipient of the 2012 Pura Belpré Illustrator Honor Award. A native of Mexico, Sara graduated from the National Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico City and went on to earn BFA and MFA degrees in Illustration from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

His mom drives a Zamboni!

Summary: Henry Holton’s family loves hockey so much that the kids teethe on hockey pucks, their dog is named Gretzky and the mom drives a Zamboni to work. It’s a foregone conclusion that Henry will put on a pair of skates as soon as he can walk. When he does, sure enough, he is a fabulous skater. But the whole hockey thing feels wrong to him, and he can’t figure out why until the day he sees a poster for an ice dance show. From then on, all he wants is skates with toe picks. No one will listen to him until his grandmother (six-time MVP in the Silver Skates League) shows him a picture of her figure skating. She gave it all up the first time she picked up a hockey stick and knew that was the thing for her. She gives Henry her old skates to try. When his parents see him, they know he is destined to be a figure skater.

Pros: A fun story for the hockey-obsessed youth of Massachusetts, all about being true to yourself. The part about his grandmother giving up figure skating for hockey was a great and unexpected twist.

Cons: A little bit predictable.

Do what feels right

Learning who you are is always hard. Even more so when you feel like you don't fit in even with your family. The Holtons are all hockey nuts, except for Henry, for whom it just doesn't click. What DOES click? The sight of a figure skater. He wants that. He NEEDS that! But how can he convince his hockey family to get him the pick-toed shoes he craves, and the chance to fly on the ice?

I could certainly see some people getting angry over this book for making Henry interested in the "feminine" activity of figure skating, but it's never presented as an activity of gender. The rest of the Holtons, male and female, are hockey players, so it's more shown as finding your individuality, in spite of your family, not in spite of sex and gender.

Still, it's a great message for any kid looking to defy stereotypes. If you know what you want, don't let society or family stand in the way.

This does seem to me more like a library borrow than a purchase, though. Still, if your little one likes it, go ahead and buy.

AWESOME!!!! FAVORITE BOOK of my hockey loving 3.5 year old

I love this book (which is good because I have to read it EVERY night). The story is SO cute, easy to follow, with some interesting words and concepts that are appropriate and challanging for a 3.5 year old.

It is a pleasure to read because the illustrations are BEAUTIFUL, the family and characters are likeable, and there is a great moral to the story about being who you are despite pressure to conform.
