Very Reluctant Hero Has Experiences Way Outside His Comfort Zone

Eleven-year-old Danny O'Neill is forced to do all sorts of adventurous things when his parents disappear. They went out to watch a storm, as they often did, and didn't come back in the morning. Danny discovers that the sycamore tree in his backyard was struck by lightning. Danny finds a piece of undamaged wood and, the next thing he knows, trees and animals can talk to him. With the companionship of the cat next door, Danny sets off to find the mysterious Book of Storms and rescue his parents.

His opponent is Sammael a creature from the ether who has a plan to gather storms and wipe humans off the planet. What is saving humanity is that he can't directly kill anyone. However, he can certainly arrange accidents that cause deaths. Sammael needs the Book of Storms to complete his dastardly plans.

Meanwhile, Danny recruits his older cousin Tom to help him on his quest despite the fact that Tom doesn't believe any part of Danny's story. I did like how Tom wasn't going to abandon Danny despite his disbelief.

I think the character that I liked best was Sammael's dog Kalia who was loyal to Sammael despite the abuse that Sammael heaped on her.

The book was filled with action and adventure as the very reluctant hero had experiences way outside his comfort zone. I liked the way Danny grew and changed through the course of this book. There is even some hope for his relationship with his neglectful and obsessive parents.

flat characters, no fun

I feel really bad giving this book only two stars, since I'm the first person to leave a review. So I will start by saying that I don't think this book is terrible. It's not poorly written, it's somewhat unique, and I do think there are people who will enjoy the mood of it. It's just that one of those people is not me.

To me, the book is joyless. Harsh things happen, which is fine, but they happen without enough victories to balance things out. When victories do happen to Danny, the eleven-year-old protagonist, they happen to him and almost despite him, but hardly ever because of him, so they feel unsatisfying. Worst of all is that I didn't care enough about Danny to root for him. This is a kid who finds a stick that gives him the power to talk to anything in the world, and what does he do? Hardly anything! There's no awe, no wonder, no excitement. Turn after turn, he comes across as limp, whiney, and uninteresting. No one else in the novel had me cheering for them either -- crazily enough, not even the trees or animals he talks too have distinct or interesting personalities.

What is frustrating is that the author clearly has imagination and writing ability. I just wish someone had helped her put a little more fun and joy into her work and her characters.

Most people do not use it even when it has got a perfect application just because its intricacies are not properly understood.

How do you machine a job with a non-monotonic variation in surface profile, i.e., with radial or axial undercuts, if Type II G71 / G72 cycles are not available? May use a CAM software if you have access to it. That is perfectly okay. But, how do you machine a workpiece obtained by casting or forging with only slightly oversized dimensions, say, about 2 mm? One cannot use G70 because removing 2-3 mm material in one pass may not be permissible. G71 or G72 would be too inefficient because the tool would cut in air most of the time. One can, of course, use a CAM software where the initial shape may be appropriately defined, but that also requires additional modeling time as well as software expertise. G73, on the other hand, can very quickly machine it to the final size in just a few passes (depending on the chosen depth of cut in one pass and the amount of over-size). G73 is designed mainly for such applications only. Read on and find out yourself. Manual part programming would never be the same again!

About the Author
Prof. S. K. Sinha earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur in 1993. He has 25 years of teaching experience, and has been working in the CNC area for over 15 years. He has authored "CNC Programming Using Fanuc Custom Macro B," published by McGraw-Hill, New York. Apart from this book, and a book on the basic CNC programming, he has published several e-books (Kindle Edition) in the series "CNC Programming Skills." 
The first book in this series is "CNC Programming Skills: Program Entry and Editing on Fanuc Machines," which gives complete, yet concise and step-by-step information on editing procedures using the MDI panel.

The second book in this series is "CNC Programming Skills: Understanding G73 on a Fanuc Lathe." Its publication was inspired by the fact that most people, just because of ignorance, do not use such a powerful canned cycle G73 even when it has got a perfect application.

The third book in this series is "CNC Programming Skills: Live Tool Drilling Cycles on a Fanuc Lathe." These days higher-end lathes come equipped with live-tooling arrangement, allowing drilling, boring and tapping anywhere on the face of the workpiece, as well as in the radial direction at any angular position, using built-in canned cycles. These are explained with suitable examples in quite detail.

The fourth book in this series is "CNC Programming Skills: Understanding Offsets on Fanuc Machines." The very first thing which a CNC operator needs to know is how to setup the coordinate system for machining. This is explained in detail in this book.The fifth book in this series is "CNC Programming Skills: Understanding G32, G34, G76 and G76 on a Fanuc Lathe." This book explains nearly everything one needs to know about threading on a lathe.

The Easter Bunny Legend as told by Nana

Linda Rooks' The Bunny Side of Easter is a wonderful story to blend the secular tale of the Easter Bunny with the true meaning of Easter. Nana tells her grandchildren the legend of how Hallelujah Bunny, better known as Hal, becomes the Easter bunny in the moon. Hal gets lost in the forest and meets new friends, faces fear, shows love and prays for help to save a friend. Because of his sacrificial love, Hal is decreed the Easter Bunny and is taken to the moon by an angel. This Easter book will make a great gift for children. The story is exceptional and the illustrations are lovely. At the end of the book the author also gives the background of the legend of the Easter Bunny and instructions to visit an internet site for exploring the deeper message of the Easter story through games and other stories about the characters and related legends. This is a book I am eager to share with my grandchildren.

A Must-Read for Easter!

As a Christian mother and grandmother I always wanted Easter to mean more than baskets, candy and colored eggs but I also wanted my daughter to experience the joy of hunting eggs at Easter. I wish that I had been able to share this book with my daughter but I will certainly read "The Bunny Side of Easter" to my small granddaughter in the years ahead. Linda W. Rook has used a small rabbit named Hallelujah Rabbit, aka Hal, to explain how he became a hero and earned the title Easter Bunny. She uses his willingness to save Audrey the angel to symbolize the sacrifice associated with Easter. Most of the story is written in the usual format but Roth does insert a few rhymes to grab a child's attention. This is a book that should be in those Easter baskets we all like to give!

The Bunny Side of Easter by Linda Rooks was a wonderful book. Our five-year-old was enthralled with the story, the characters and didn’t want it to end. The way Ms. Rook rhymed the words made them flow out of my mouth while I read, sounding more like a song than just a story. The story itself was a beautiful lesson on unconditional love. The characters were ones that you fell in love with. The illustrations were beautifully done. Wonderful book, great message - definitely one I will read over and over and share with our friends.

Amazing second adventure of Flynn and friends

I was thoroughly intrigued to learn more about Flynn and the lessons he learns as he interacts with wonderful and mysterious creatures in this engaging and exciting story. Even while knowing that the book is for younger readers, I was interested in what was happening and eager to read the story. I also appreciate its simplicity, and yet there are important life lessons and wisdom to impart to the reader. Don't miss the return of Flynn and his friends in this second adventure! And as a real bonus, there are incredible, unique graphic art designs at the end of each chapter—amazing!

Great confidence building book!

My son really enjoys this series so far, keeps him reading every day! After he finished this book he was even interested in reading other subjects because he felt more confident to read a chapter book. I think he felt comfortable with this book because he enjoys playing the game, and found some insights into the game as well as enjoyed using his imagination!

This like THE best... Book... EVER! And I LOVE how each book ends in a GIANT cliff hanger, and your left wondering what happens next. When I finished the book, the third one was still being written, and I'm looking forward to reading the next one!

In 1869, when Edith Wharton's aunt Mary Mason Jones (immortalized as Mrs. Manson Mingot in "The Age of Innocence") finished her French classical house at the corner of 57th Street and Fifth Avenue - in a block for which her father paid $1500 forty years earlier - she was considered an adventuress for building so far uptown. By 1882, just down the avenue at 52nd Street, William K. Vanderbilt finished his limestone mansion, ushering in the era of the lavish New York Great House, modeled after the London houses of English aristocrats and their Parisian counterparts. "Great Houses of New York, 1880-1930" presents the stories of the most elegant houses built in New York. Michael Kathrens profiles New York houses known only for their magisterial presence on the city's most elegant boulevards, some of which still exist today, including the houses of Otto Kahn (Convent of the Sacred Heart), Andrew Carnegie (Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum), James B. Duke (NYU Institute of Fine Art), Morton F. Plant (Cartier), and William Starr Miller (Neue Gallery).

About the Author
Michael Kathrens has studied the history of American houses and their residents since his early teens. His unique perspective on the subject weaves a rich history of clients and architects, and the social milieu in which it all transpired. He previously wrote the first monograph on the houses of Horace Trumbauer (Acanthus Press, 2002) and is currently working on a book of the great houses of Newport, to be published by Acanthus Press in 2006.

Gilded Age New York

I have been waiting for a book like this for some time, and this one does not disappoint. It is well researched with wonderful historic black and white photos. The book is of the finest quality and the text is well put together. This is such an interesting subject and the authors are very thorough in their research, the book really feels complete. I highly recommend it to anyone with any interest in wonderful Gilded Age residental architecture or just an interest in the rich history of this great city. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed in this book and I commend the authors on doing such a fine job on a most worthy subject. Thank you.

Acanthus Press second place prize winner

I own a number of the Acanthus Press series, as well as numerous other books on great estates and mansions, some more than 100 years old. So I'm a tough critic. I agree with the other reviewers that this is a very good volume and in my opinion second only to the House of Los Angeles ( two volumes) set. The author has published many of the period photos in full page format. But what I would have liked in this book was more homes. There are a number of well photographed equally grand and important mansions that are missing. The jaw dropping Yerkes mansion for one was extensively photographed at the time. I am pleased however that the author did include the wonderfully gaudy Clark mansion, heretofore overlooked in other books on this subject.
This volume definitely should be part of your collection.

Hilarious!

ISBN 0590483528 - I made the mistake of reading reviews before I read the book - and half of them seem to refer to things that didn't happen! Michael's little sister doesn't threaten his life, the bird doesn't attack Michael and the shopkeeper doesn't tell a scary story about the clock.

Michael is 12, big brother to seven-year-old Tara, a top contender for "Worst Little Sister in the World". He gets blamed for everything she does, and that's no accident! Tara sets him up, over and over, even ruining his birthday and embarrassing him in front of his friends. When their father brings home an antique cuckoo clock that Tara can hardly keep her hands off, Michael sees a chance to get even. Twisting the head of the cuckoo to face backwards, Michael is sure Tara will be blamed. That doesn't happen, because when he wakes up, it's his 12th birthday - again! - and they don't even own the clock yet. Michael needs to turn time around again before it's too late (or early...) for him!

Stine's horror story for kids is too funny to be horror this time, but it's worth reading anyway. You'll appreciate your own siblings a little more - unless they're worse than Tara, which is hard to imagine.

Fun and Suspenseful

It's been quite a few years since I've read this book, but my younger brother was searching for something to read from my collection, and I recommended this one to him. For me, the majority of the Goosebumps books were never scary - it was just a matter of if they had likeable characters and a good story.
Fortunately, "Cuckoo Clock of Doom" has both. Michael feels like a more fleshed out character than R.L. Stine's other protagonists: he has a crush on a girl, but his chances with her and with everything else in life are constantly ruined by his evil sister Tara. Tara isn't just a brat, she's written as pure evil, with no redeeming qualities, which only makes the reader sympathize with Michael even more.
The idea of "changing the past" has been used countless times, but it always works because everyone wishes they could do it. Michael tells us his mishaps in the beginning, so it becomes quite involving to see him try and evade the eventual outcomes later on. As the story progresses, it is not so much a matter of changing the past as it becomes a race against time to keep Michael from disappearing forever. The final few chapters, with the obligatory plot twist on the last page, are truly suspenseful and show R.L. Stine at his best.
Overall, this is a highly recommended book for grade-schoolers, and one parents should consider picking up if they see it. The Goosebumps fad has died out now so this one might be hard to find, but this is the kind of quick, light, reading that develops a child's imagination.

One of the best in the series...

Michael Webster often wonders what he did to deserve such a horrible little sister as Tara. Constantly blamed for things that are her fault, she even manages to wreck Michael’s birthday present and ruins his party. Michael wishes that Tara had never been born and he wants revenge.
The opportunity comes when Mr Webster brings home the antique Cuckoo Clock he has dreamed of buying for years and Michael sees the perfect chance to get Tara into trouble. But Michael’s plan goes terribly wrong when he turns the cuckoo head around. Now time is going backwards and Michael is getting younger every day. Will he be able to reverse the clock’s effects before time runs out completely?
This is one of my favourite books in the goosebumps series. “The Cuckoo Clock of Doom” mixes suspense and humour and will keep you reading all the way through. This book also makes me really appreciate being an only child. I recommend this to all kids aged from eight to twelve.

It is nice to finally have an E83 service manual

It is nice to finally have an E83 service manual. It provides basic steps but disappointedly doesn't cover in detail the most common problems with Bimmers (e.g., expansion tanks, check engine lights, MAF sensor etc..) Its better than nothing though but I am not sure if it is worth the price.

Not like other Bentley manuals

I have Bentley manuals for a variety of BMWs with manufacturing dates ranging from 1985 to 2007. I find this manual not very helpful. I think the vast technology and engineering changes that are taking place for the X3 make a comprehensive manual very difficult. I purchased the manual to help with replacing the serpentine belt and valve cover gasket. My 2007 X3 valve cover and its attached appliances were nowhere mentioned in the Bentley's instructions for valve cover gasket replacement. I think web searches and YouTube out smart this manual. Save 125 dollars and look elsewhere for X3 DIY help.

Worth the price

This book has the look and feel (and price tag) of a college text book. It includes detailed photographs and step by step instructions. This is the only book available for the X3 and is a must have for the 2nd, 3rd, + owner that doesn't want to spend thousands of dollars on paying someone else to work on their car. My first at home repair saved me $300 in labor costs. This book is well worth the high price.

This was a enjoyable read. I have read all the books except book 4. I can't wait to read it. A very well-structured plot. A page turner for young readers. This book is a must read. An Important Lesson for all children

Always Fly Away. This is the advice a mother bird gives her child. Not once, but every time the little bird goes out to play. Repeating the lesson is key to remembering. And this book can become a favorite bedtime story, to help your own little bird know when it's time to fly (run) away. The danger in the book is serious enough to hold a child's attention, but removed far enough from the human child as to not cause nightmares. The author has combined a simple story, and delightful illustrations into a soon to be classic you'll want in your child's library.

Fun and simple for teaching kids about strangers

I bought 2 of these books. I'm donating one to my children's school. Stella the bird teaches important safety skills in a fun and simple way that children understand, including being aware of their surroundings and trusting their instincts. I love the questions in the back that reinforce the lessons being taught. I will read this to my kids often.

This children's safety book is an essential tool for all families and communities. Even before my kids were born I was seeking information on how to keep them safe and to empower them to identify scenarios, people, etc that didn't seem right and explain it in a way that would not necessarily frighten them but guide them. This book teaches kids to recognize that even though someone seems nice they are still a stranger and should keep their distance. An added plus is the beautiful illustrations guaranteed to capture your child's eye while learning about safety. Whole communities will benefit from this book by utilizing it in their schools and libraries empowering all of us, young and old to keep an eye open for each other.
