A great reference book on product management
By Kindle Customer
I found out about the book through General Assembly. As soon as I started reading it, I could not put it down. Its not like many dry text books - it includes a lot of great information on product management plus many examples as well as personal experiences of the author. His background is impressive with training as a Royal Air Force pilot and classics major who learned technology by himself during projects. Jock's tone of writing is more conversational which makes it easier to read his book and makes you feel as if you are talking to him in person.

His main question to his readers: "whichever path leads you into product management, I have one further piece of advice for you. Before accepting ant PM job offer, ask yourself the following questions:
- Doss the product excite me?
- Does the market seem intriguing?
- Do I click with people I'll be working with?"

This book is highly recommended for those interested in product management.

Having a permanent base in Manhattan has its pros and cons for 17-year-old safecracker Maggie Silver. On hiatus from her usual international spy missions, Maggie gets to spend more quality time with her former mark-turned-boyfriend Jesse Oliver and insanely cool best friend, Roux, which makes having to attend SAT prep class almost bearable.

But when Maggie's parents are falsely accused of stealing precious gold coins, Maggie must use her safecracking skills to try and clear their names. Too bad her efforts only put her, and everyone she loves, in danger.

The group flees to Paris, where they have to form a new team…and find a way to prove their innocence and reveal the guilty.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Maggie Silver, a plucky 17-year-old international spy and expert safecracker, has ceased traveling the world with her secret-agent parents. She has put down roots in Manhattan, now as a permanent undercover operative in her New York City high school. Fans of the first book will be glad to see that Maggie is dating Jesse, her prior mark, and her best friend, Roux, returns as well. When her parents are framed for a crime they didn't commit, Maggie must draw on her special skill set to clear their names. There is significant action and espionage, but still a focus on relationships, especially once Maggie realizes the value of working together. The author's narration is excellent and quickly paced. Fans of Ally Carter's "Gallagher Girls" series and Sara Shepard's "Pretty Little Liars" will be particularly drawn to this tale. A recommended purchase for libraries with young adults craving more stories of mystery, secrets, and adventure.—Nicole Martin, Grafton-Midview Public Library, OH

A Hilarious Follow-up to A Wonderful Book
By Julie A. Herzog
I'm a big fan of Robin Benway, and when I heard that she was releasing a sequel to Also Known As, I was ecstatic. AKA was the first book I read by Robin, and I was immediately drawn in by her sarcasm and wit, as well as her realistic portrayal of what it's like to be a teenager (the emotions, not the international espionage). Going Rogue followed in the same vein. The colorful cast of characters ensured that I'd be laughing throughout the entire book. But Maggie's internal struggle between doing what she feels is right and doing what her parents want her to is emotionally gripping, and her fights with Jesse are downright heartbreaking.

The plot of the book is also very intriguing. The Collective, the spy organization that Maggie and her parents work for, has started corrupting from the inside out, and Maggie's family gets caught up in the mess. Maggie decides to go rogue and clear their names, and gets in all sorts of trouble along the way. The book was definitely exciting, but in a slightly different way from the first book. In Going Rogue, the danger feels realer and more present, and it kept me glued to the book until I was done.

All in all, Going Rogue is a fantastic book. Robin writes YA like it's what she was born to do. I don't think this book is better than Also Known As, but it's definitely just as good.

Maggie, Jesse, Roux, and Angelo Are Back and Better Than Ever
By Maggie
4.25 stars

Robin Benway is the master of writing smart, thoughtful books that you don’t even realize are smart or thoughtful because you’re having so much fun reading them. It’s been well established that I loved Also Known As, 50% because it’s a great book and 50% because the main character’s name is Maggie and I’m happy to say that I loved Going Rogue just as much, if not more, then I loved Also Known As.

Because I didn’t think Also Known As needed a sequel I was slightly worried going into this, but I should have just trusted Robin. In this second book in the series The Collective has gone off script and Maggie, her parents, and Angelo must go rogue. Maggie must also break out from under her parents’ careful watch and start to take on missions of her own and unfortunately Roux and Jesse get dragged into all of the craziness that ensues.

In my review of Also Known As I wrote: “Do I think a 16-year-old could really be a safecracker working with some of the top spies in the world? No. Do I think this book had a lot of absurd things happen? Absolutely. Did it matter? No.” And I still feel the exact same way. Reading about a 17-year-old breaking into a criminal mastermind’s home just doesn’t seem real to me, but the story is so fun and the characters are so great that it just doesn’t matter.

Let’s get to where I think Robin Benway really excels and that’s at blending the serious with the fun. Everything about this book is fun. Even when Maggie is in tough situations she’s still her smart, sarcastic self and that makes reading these books such a joy. But there’s also a lot of seriousness and relatable situations hidden among all the good times. When this book starts Maggie and Jesse have been dating for a little over a year and while things seemed to mostly have been good, as Maggie gets drawn back into the spy world things get tough for them. Maggie must keep secrets from Jesse and Jesse, even though he doesn’t know exactly what’s going on, is worried for Maggie’s safety and wants to protect her (in the least misogynistic way possible). Essentially these problems are variations of problems lots of people face in relationships; sometimes you have to keep secrets from those you love and sometimes you have to let people take risks and live their lives even when you want to protect them.

The same can be said for Maggie’s relationship with her parents. I absolutely love the parent-kid dynamic that they have in both books, but in this book Maggie needs to strike out on her own and put some space between herself and her parents. Not only because she’s entering her senior year of high school and getting ready to leave for college, but also because she’s working with Angelo as part of their “going rogue” on things her parents can’t know about. Even though the mission with Angelo is such a crazy thing it really struck me how Maggie’s need to assert her own independence and live her own life is just like what so many other teenagers go through.

After the perfect blend of fun and serious my favorite part of this book was obviously Angelo and Roux. So often I can’t stand supporting characters and best friends, but Angelo and Roux are something special. I loved that we got to see more of Angelo in this book and more of Angelo at work. And Roux is just amazing, I don’t think she was quite as wacky in this book, but she has some amazing moments. I mean, who else would have a Faberge egg hidden in their sock drawer?

Bottom Line: This book is so perfect for so many people. If you like fun, read this book. If you like contemporary YA novels, read this book. If you like spies, read this book. Robin Benway’s books are something truly special and if you haven’t had the pleasure of reading one of her books yet I encourage you go fix that mistake ASAP.

I received an electronic review copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley (thank you!). All opinions are my own.

An Fun, Entertaining Follow Up To AKA
By Step Into Fiction
I was so excited for this book. When I found out there was going to be a second book, I may have smiled liked an idiot. Also Known As was one of those few books that had me laughing or smiling most of the book. There's so much humor mixed in with everything else that a book has. When an author can be as witty as Robin Benway, it's a definite plus in my book. So when I had the opportunity to snag Going Rogue, I didn't waste a second. Was this book everything I wanted it to be? Yes. Was it better than Also Known As? No. That doesn't mean it was bad, though. Hear me out . . .

While this book was exciting, filled with tons of drama, action and suspense, not to mention a ton of humor it just wasn't as exciting as the first book. I think that's because with the first book, I didn't know what to expect and pleasantly surprised while the second book, I already know the characters, know all about Maggie's secret identity, if you will, and her lifestyle. So, even though the book may not have been as exciting as the first one, it was still a fantastic read. One that you actually don't have to read the first book but I definitely think you'll be missing out if you don't.

Roux is still as witty as she was in the first book. She's such a blunt character. She says what she feels and that's that. I'm kind of envious of her, actually; I always wished I were bolder so I could just give a few people my opinions. She's had a rough few years (hell, she's had a rough life, really) with the people at school being so cruel to her and her parents are never around. She is basically living on her own with no friends except for Maggie and Jesse. Everyone knows, as a teenager, friends are very important in finding out who you are as that's one big thing about your teenage years, finding yourself. Or at least, I believe this. So the fact that Roux is as awesome of a person and as great of a friend as she is, even with everything that's gone on while growing up, is amazing. She's the type of person I'd want having my back and being my best friend so Maggie is very lucky to have her.

Angelo is still probably one of my favorite people in this book. He's so sophisticated, brilliant and loving. He has a heart as big as the world and he's not afraid to show it but he's also someone you don't want to have as an enemy. He plays such a vital role in this book, not that he didn't in the first one but he's just so damn important in this. All he wants to do is protect his family and he'll do whatever he can to make sure they're all safe.

The relationship between Jesse and Maggie is very up and down. They love each other, this is very clear but how can a relationship work when you're dating a spy? It's very strained because there's so many things Maggie can't tell Jesse and Jesse feels helpless because he can't protect the thing he loves most. They actually have this huge fight that just totally made me a puddle of mush. It was so emotional reading it, I actually felt like I was a part of the fight and the hurt that followed their fight. When an author can make you feel that strongly during a scene, they are certainly doing it right.

This book is a little different because it's Maggie doing work not for Collective but she's doing a job to protect her parents, who are now being investigated by the Collective. What she didn't realize, taking this job, was how dangerous it would be for her but also for her parents, Angelo, Jesse and Roux. However, dangerous means you're on to something, right? It means, you're getting warmer at getting to the bottom of what's causing the problem but is it really worth the risk of everyone's lives? When things go awry, they are forced to split up and flee to Paris where she has to trust Angelo's plan. A plan she knows nothing about. I definitely feel like the best part of this book came once they had to flee. We meet some very interesting & fun characters and we get to see a new side of Roux, one I really like!

Like I said earlier, you don't have to read Also Known As to read this but I recommend you do. If you're looking for something light, easy and fun then these books are definitely for you. I can guarantee you'll have a few laughs with a smile on your face most of the time.

From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—The age-old fable is retold with a modern Israeli setting. The tortoise and the hare race from Tel Aviv to the Dead Sea, allowing readers to glimpse at locations along the way, from the city of Jerusalem to an oasis in the desert. Instead of providing a "whirlwind tour" like so many picture books about Israel, the locales are well integrated into the story line, and the characters' actions flesh out their personalities. Cleanly stylish, slightly retro digital illustrations show an Israel populated by diverse people and animals. Hebrew signage adds local flavor. The final spread offers a stylized map showing the race route and reminding readers of the things the tortoise and hare encountered along the way. VERDICT A wonderfully unique approach to showcasing Israel for young children.—Heidi Estrin, Congregation B'nai Israel, Boca Raton, FL

This is a fun retold tale of the Hare and Tortoise that young children will love!
By Deb
Hare and Tortoise were sitting in a little café near the Hashalom train station. They were great friends and what better to do than to have a conversation while sipping away on their beverages? Well, on some days they tossed their polka dotted ball back and forth while “they frolicked at the beach.” Tel Aviv was a great place to check out museums and they “dined on carrots and hummus before attending the opera.” One day, as they hung around watching the trains at Hashalom, Hare announced that he was some speedy and just might be faster than those trains.

Tortoise looked up at Hare and laughed, “You are fast, my friend, but you are not as fast as a train.” Not very likely, but certainly Hare was faster than Tortoise. The bragging went on until there was a challenge ... it would be a race to the Dead Sea! Hare and Tortoise were soon on their way, making their way out of Tel Aviv traffic. Beep, beep! The race was on and they couldn’t waste any time. Tortoise was calling out “shalom” to everyone, but Hare was hopping right along. Hare was so far ahead he could stop to buy apricots in Jerusalem, check out a soccer game in Independence park, and enjoy “a cup of tea and flaky baklava” with a Bedouin. No doubt Hare was going to win this race, or would he?

This is a fun retold tale of the Hare and Tortoise that young children will love. Of course this race across Israel is different that Aesop’s, but equally exciting as the friends race toward the Dead Sea. The tale is predictable, but the charm factor is great. In the back of the book is a map that young children can check out so they’ll know where the duo is headed. The artwork is lively and I enjoyed visiting places like the market and the Bedouin’s tent along the way. Children can also learn about foods such as hummus, rugelach, and falafel. This retold tale is one classic tale you won’t want to miss!

Old Fashioned, but Charming
By drebbles
"The Five Little Peppers" are Ben, Polly, Joel, Davie, and Phronsie. Their father died when Phronsie was a baby and Mrs. Pepper struggles to earn enough money to support the family. Despite their poverty, they are a loving family, full of spirit and adventure. Ben and Polly do what they can to support the family, but a bout with measles threatens the well being of the entire Pepper clan, especially Joel and Polly. The family has other adventures and befriend Jasper King during one of them. This friendship will enrich their lives in ways they never thought would be possible.

It's always interesting as an adult to reread a book that I loved as a child. When I was young I thought how much fun the Peppers had and longed to belong to a large family. As an adult, I realize how poor the family really was and how quickly the children had to grow up. As a child I thought how terrible it was that Polly couldn't read for days on end because of the measles; as an adult I realize the Peppers couldn't even afford to buy books.

First published in 1881, "The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew" is old-fashioned (the doctor even makes house calls!), but still enjoyable. The Peppers are all delightful children, with Joel being the most honest of the bunch as he complains about having to eat the same food every day. Margaret Sidney was a talented author, who could make even inanimate objects, such as the stove, seem alive. The children's adventures may seem simple to today's young readers, who are used to Harry Potter and the like, but it's a refreshing change.

There is something special here
By Elizabeth G. Melillo
I recently re-read this book, which I'd enjoyed as a child (forty years ago). Today, it seems rather dismal to me - horrible poverty, illness, the pat happy ending and children who are horribly gushing over their mother. Yet, years back, what I most liked about the story was that, being a very independent and mature child myself, Polly and Ben succeed very well at taking on adult responsibilities.
Though I'm at a loss about explaining exactly how the author does so, I've found that this is a book which every reader interprets differently - and that shows an amazing depth. My own mother remembers reading it as a child, and being moved by the familial devotion and respect for the matriarch. As other posts here make clear, it can reach each of us on a different level.
This book is a worthy addition to any child's library. However, I'd leave a single caveat: do not use it to prompt "a talk," especially on the "look how good you have it today" theme. Let the era introduce itself. It was a time of great poverty for many, yet also one which idealised a form of "perfect" family relationships which no one could hope to have. The combination of gritty realism with idealistic dreams has a message that kids will grasp on their own, and probably quite inventively.

Family Tradition
By Liese Tschudin Santos
This book was the first in a series of 12 about the Pepper family. It was written in 1881 and takes place shortly after the Civil War(1860's-70's). The Pepper books follow the adventures of the 5 Pepper children and their widowed mother. The Peppers are poor but proud and the books extoll the importance of family and love and honesty and believing in yourself. These are wonderful books for children of all ages. They are sweet and funny and have an undercurrent of morality sadly lacking in most books written today. I started with my mothers childhood copy and have read and re-read the 4 books from the series I have been able to track down. I would recommend this and all the Pepper books to everyone. They are especially suited to be passed down from mother to daughter.

Quick and Fun Read
By Busy Busy Bookwyrm
Title: Billie B. Brown, The Best Project
Author: Sally Rippin
Genre: Fiction
Age: Elementary
Part of a Series?: Yes

*I received this book as part of a consultant's kit when I joined Usborne Books & More as an Independent Consultant

Summary:
Billie B. Brown is eager to take part in a class project to build a model city. The only catch is that she wants to impress her substitute teacher by making the best project: a tower to place in the center of the class's city and her glue just isn't strong enough. This book outlines her struggles to make her project match her vision--the night before her project is due.

Overall Impression:
I read this to my daughter while we were at a baseball game with my son's cub scout pack. It was quick to get into the conflict, had pictures for my daughter to look at, and moved very quickly. I think I read the whole thing to her in 20, or maybe 30, minutes. That, more than anything, shows its worth: my daughter loves books, but rarely sits for more than five minutes to listen to a single book. This one held her attention better than any other I've encountered so far.

The Nitty Gritty:
The drawings are cute and so is the story line. I very much enjoyed how quickly Ms. Rippin established who Bille B. Brown was and what her current conflict was. Billie as a character is very easy for a young child to connect with and relate to, and I believe that this book could be read to 3 and 4 year olds who really enjoy being read to and who really have a good attention span. It would also be of interest to early elementary children who are living the same struggles as Billie. This book also has large print, with very few words on a page, and tops out at around four or five chapters, making it a good transition between picture books and chapter books.

As for the writing, the only drawback--for me--is that the fast pace might make it a little harder for children to really internalize the lessons that are featured in this book. Yes, the fast pace helps keep kids' attention and allows them to more quickly complete the book, which can be a very big milestone for younger readers. However, I feel that five or ten more pages could have enhanced the secondary lesson in the book (which is currently almost entirely ignored) and allowed for a more blatant expression of Billie's growth, without significantly changing the speed with which a child can complete the book. On the flip side, removing the secondary lesson would also have left space to more fully explore the primary lesson the book presents.

Book Club Chatter:
Strictly speaking, this book is not likely to end up in a book club setting. However, my local library does have younger book clubs and they are becoming more prevalent. In the absence of a book club for your child, these questions can easily become a conversation between parent and child.

Chapter One:
--How do you think Billie could have better handled her frustrations?

Chapter Two:
--Do you think Billie should be concerned with comparing her project to Lola's?
--What do you think Billie could have done to protect her project when she discovered it was still too wet to move?

Chapter Three:
--Can you remember a time you were angry?
--How did you treat the people around you when you were angry?
--How do you think that made them feel?
--(If you are stopping and talking about each chapter as you go): What do you think Billie did to fix her project? What was her super duper idea?

Chapter Four:
--Billie compares herself to Lola and has a desire to make a project that is better than Lola's. Billie even says that Lola is perfect. Do you think it is more important for Billie to do her best or to do better than Lola? Why?
--How do you think Billie felt when Lola and Lola's friends laughed at her?
--Can you think of a time you were brave? What did you have to do? How did it make you feel to face your fear and be brave?

My Daughter's Rating: A million trillion stars
Minor Spoiler Ahead!: Because she fixed her problem when she made her sculpture.

My Rating: 4 Stars
This book is great at capturing a young reader's attention, which is why I gave it a four star rating. And it is very cute and easy to connect to. However, the fast pace resulted in glossing over the lessons covered by the book, which kept me from giving it five stars.

Amazon.com Review
Though not the first novel she wrote, Sense and Sensibility was the first Jane Austen published. Though she initially called it Elinor and Marianne, Austen jettisoned both the title and the epistolary mode in which it was originally written, but kept the essential theme: the necessity of finding a workable middle ground between passion and reason. The story revolves around the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne. Whereas the former is a sensible, rational creature, her younger sister is wildly romantic--a characteristic that offers Austen plenty of scope for both satire and compassion. Commenting on Edward Ferrars, a potential suitor for Elinor's hand, Marianne admits that while she "loves him tenderly," she finds him disappointing as a possible lover for her sister: Oh! Mama, how spiritless, how tame was Edward's manner in reading to us last night! I felt for my sister most severely. Yet she bore it with so much composure, she seemed scarcely to notice it. I could hardly keep my seat. To hear those beautiful lines which have frequently almost driven me wild, pronounced with such impenetrable calmness, such dreadful indifference! Soon however, Marianne meets a man who measures up to her ideal: Mr. Willoughby, a new neighbor. So swept away by passion is Marianne that her behavior begins to border on the scandalous. Then Willoughby abandons her; meanwhile, Elinor's growing affection for Edward suffers a check when he admits he is secretly engaged to a childhood sweetheart. How each of the sisters reacts to their romantic misfortunes, and the lessons they draw before coming finally to the requisite happy ending forms the heart of the novel. Though Marianne's disregard for social conventions and willingness to consider the world well-lost for love may appeal to modern readers, it is Elinor whom Austen herself most evidently admired; a truly happy marriage, she shows us, exists only where sense and sensibility meet and mix in proper measure. --Alix Wilber

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-7-- A pleasure to view, read, and hold, this new edition of an old favorite deserves space in every collection. From jacket painting, to cover (with Tinker Bell embossed in gold), to endpapers (dark maps of Neverland), Gustafson's artwork opens doors to glimpses of old friends and to new interpretations. Fifty oil paintings reveal expressive, changing characters. Peter Pan is dewy-cheeked, spry, wicked. Maternal Wendy is tender, then stoic. Even Hook is at times downcast. The Indians, proud and handsome, avoid stereotype. Masterly composition and use of light create dramatic full-page illustrations, accompanied by cameos of ordinary objects (kite, bear, tea kettle). Compared to Hague's illustrations for Peter Pan (Holt, 1987), which were dark and surreal, these are light and vital. Handsome bookmaking, Barrie's text, and Gustafson's pictures combine to breathe new life into Peter Pan's old shadow. --Carolyn Noah, Central Mass. Regional Library System, Worcester, MA

From Library Journal
Austen's novels (e.g., Pride and Prejudice, Audio Reviews, LJ 11/1/92) have lately received so much well-deserved media attention that another version of her first novel, in yet another format, may appear redundant to persons not sufficiently acquainted with the author's charms. However, for her many admirers, both present and future, this new audiobook is a treasure, thanks to a superb reading by actress Susannah Harker. The talented narrator is an ideal interpreter of Austen's delightful paean to the virtue of sense as she traces the struggles of her young heroines to achieve happiness. Harker skillfully captures each character's personality through subtle inflection, and she keenly, yet unobtrusively, underscores the author's delicious irony. With a reading of such quality, the romantic predicaments of the Miss Dashwoods become all-absorbing and the hours fly by too quickly. Most highly recommended for all libraries.

The sensible and the sensitive
By EA Solinas
One of the Dashwood daughters is smart, down-to-earth and sensible. The other is wildly romantic and sensitive.

And in a Jane Austen novel, you can guess that there are going to be romantic problems aplenty for both of them -- along with the usual entailment issues, love triangles, sexy bad boys and societal scandals. "Sense and Sensibility" is a quietly clever, romantic little novel that builds up to a dramatic peak on Marianne's romantic troubles, while also quietly exploring Elinor's struggles.

When Mr. Dashwood dies, his entire estate is entailed to his weak son John and snotty daughter-in-law Fanny. His widow and her three daughters are left with little money and no home.

Over the next few weeks, the eldest daughter Elinor begins to fall for Fanny's studious, quiet brother Edward... but being the down-to-earth one, she knows she hasn't got a chance. Her impoverished family soon relocates to Devonshire, where a tiny cottage is being rented to them by one of Mrs. Dashwood's relatives -- and Marianne soon attracts the attention of two men. One is the quiet, much older Colonel Brandon, and the other is the dashing and romantic Willoughby.

But things begin to spiral out of control when Willoughby seems about to propose to Marianne... only to abruptly break off his relationship with her. And during a trip to London, both Elinor and Marianne discover devastating facts about the men they are in love with -- both of them are engaged to other women. And after disaster strikes the Dashwood family, both the sisters will discover what real love is about...

At its heart, "Sense and Sensibility" is about two girls with completely opposite personalities, and the struggle to find love when you're either too romantic or too reserved for your own good. As well as, you know, the often-explored themes in Austen's novels -- impoverished women's search for love and marriage, entailment, mild scandal, and the perils of falling for a sexy bad boy who cares more for money than for true love... assuming he even knows what true love is.

Austen's formal style takes on a somewhat more melancholy flavor in this book, with lots of powerful emotions and vivid splashes of prose ("The wind roared round the house, and the rain beat against the windows"); and she introduces a darker tone near the end. Still, there's a slight humorous tinge to her writing, especially when she's gently mocking Marianne and Mrs. Dashwood's melodrama ("They gave themselves up wholly to their sorrow, seeking increase of wretchedness in every reflection that could afford it").

And Marianne and Elinor make excellent dual heroines for this book -- that still love and cherish each other, even though their polar opposite personalities frequently clash. What's more, they each have to become more like the other before they can find happiness. There's also a small but solid supporting cast -- the hunting-obsessed Sir John, the charming Willoughby (who has some nasty stuff in his past), the emotional Mrs. Dashwood, and the gentle, quiet Colonel Brandon, who shows his love for Marianne in a thousand small ways.

"Sense and Sensibility" is an emotionally powerful, beautifully written tale about two very different sisters, and the rocky road to finding a lasting love. Not as striking as "Pride and Prejudice," but still a deserving classic.

An Excellent Introduction to Jane Austen's Works
By Debbie Lee Wesselmann
Although SENSE AND SENSIBILITY is not of one Jane Austen's best novels, it is nonetheless a major novel, with the author's then-young talent in full display. Its publication in 1811 marked Austen as a huge literary talent, and its significance reverberates even today as contemporary readers re-discover the works of this author so adept at uncovering the foibles of nineteenth century aristocracy.
The title refers to the two eldest Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, one of whom (Elinor) embraces practicality and restraint while the other (Marianne) gives her whole heart to every endeavor. When the Dashwoods - mother Mrs. Dashwood, Elinor, Marianne, and youngest sister Margaret - are sent, almost impoverished, to a small cottage in Devonshire after the death of their father and the machinations of their brother's wife, they accept their new circumstances with as much cheer as they can muster even though their brother and his wife have taken over the family estate and fortune. Their characters, albeit wildly different in their approaches to life, are impeccably honest and intelligent - and their suitors take notice. Elinor falls in love with the shy, awkward Edward, while Marianne's affections are lavished on the dashing hunter Willoughby. As in all Austen's books, love and marriage don't come easily, as affections aren't always returned and social jockeying sometimes takes precedence to true love. In an interestingly twist, the end of this novel brings into question which sister represents which part of the title.
SENSE AND SENSIBILITY only hints at the social skewering Austen would use to such great effect in her later novels, and the humor here is only occasional and slight, as this novel adopts a generally serious tone. Parody is largely limited to the gossipy Mrs. Jenkins, who jumps to wild conclusions about situations she knows nothing about. Though arranged marriage and true love figure prominently in all of Austen's novels, this novel focuses almost exclusivity on the prospects of the two main characters, making it less complex than the novels that followed. Reserved Elinor and exuberant Marianne are expertly drawn, with Edward, Willoughby, and Colonel Brandon (whose lovesick hopes for Marianne are dashed again and again) also engaging creations. Except for the first page or two where the circumstances of the Dashwoods are set up through a series of deaths and relations, possibly causing some confusion, this novel is exceedingly easy to follow for contemporary readers.
This novel is an excellent introduction to Jane Austen's works because of its relative simplicity (though readers should not dismiss it as simple) and the use of typical themes and social situations. Book clubs and students might want to explore the influence of money on nineteenth century British society as well as the meaning of the title as it applies to both the sisters and the other characters. It is also interesting to note both the helplessness and the extraordinary power of women in different circumstances.
Just because this is not Austen's best novel, I could not take away a single star because it is such a delightful book. I highly recommend this novel for all readers.

One of the most beautiful books I own
By Rebecca Taylor
Sense & Sensibility has been reviewed ad infinitum, but I wanted to say that this is one of the most beautiful books I own.

I was looking for a series of classics that I could purchase in hardcover to spruce up my personal library. I stumbled upon these special editions from Penguin Classics, with covers designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith. I love books, but these books still make me giddy with delight when I pick them up. The covers have so much character and they're sturdy. The fonts are classic and easy to read, and the paper is substantial. The ribbon bookmarks, that match the cover, are a really nice touch. The only bad thing I can say, and it's so minor, is that the binding is a little stiff when the book is new. It loosens as you read.

There are more titles available, though some are still exclusive to the UK. I truly hope Amazon and Penguin make all editions available in the US and keep them coming!
