When I published 5 Acres & A Dream The Book: The Challenges of Establishing a Self-Sufficient Homestead, I described it as neither a how-to nor a why-to book. Although it contains quite a bit of practical advice about many homesteading skills, it is mostly the story of our homestead journey: ups, downs, successes, mistakes, and the lessons learned from them. The Little Series of Homestead How-Tos is a compliment to that book. It is a work in progress which will eventually include the skills mentioned in 5 Acres & A Dream The Book, plus others as well. I hope it will encourage you, my readers, toward your own self-reliant lifestyles.
About the Author
Leigh Tate and her husband Dan are an empty nest couple who homestead five acres in the foothills of the Southern Appalachians. Their vision is to become as self-sustaining as possible by stewarding their land, animals, and resources. Leigh's homesteading activities include gardening, food preservation, foraging, raising goats, chickens, and guinea fowl, herbs, cheese making, permaculture landscaping, spinning, weaving, knitting, sewing, quilting, natural dying, soapmaking, wood cookstove cookery, and renovating their old 1920s farmhouse.

A great addition to any homesteading library

The dry title is a bit misleading --- the contents aren't just about the Pearson square. Instead, you'll learn some reasons why you might choose to mix the feed for your own livestock, will enjoy lots of beautiful photos of chickens, goats, and miniature pigs, and will read some timely warnings about feed-related ailments of goats.
And, of course, the book also presents a primer on figuring out how to get the appropriate protein content of your feed mixtures using the Pearson square. That part is really the simplest part of the book, just involving basic arithmetic. But it's handy information to have, and is especially excellent paired with the tables of protein, calcium, and phosphorus content of various feeds. As such, this is an excellent addition to your homesteading library and a good reference to have on hand when and if you ever decide to mix your own feeds.
