The Extraordinary Voyage of Kamome: A Tsunami Boat Comes Home, by Lori Dengler, Amya Miller

This sweet story, intended for lower elementary grades, is intended to provide a window for discussing earthquakes, tsunamis, marine debris, preparedness and cultural awareness in the classroom and within families. On April 7, 2013, a little over two years after the magnitude 9 Tohoku-oki Japan earthquake triggered a massive tsunami off the coast of northeastern Japan, a lone boat washed up on the shores of Crescent City, California. The confirmation of the boat as belonging to a high school in Rikuzentakata was first step in an amazing story that has linked two tsunami-vulnerable communities on opposite sides of the Pacific and initiated friendships between high school students in Rikuzentakata.

A True Story of Inspiration, Hope and Resiliancy
By ladyfern31
One cannot put into words the devastating effects of the earthquake and subsequent tsunami to hit Japan on March 11, 2011. The devastation was unfathomable, and the people of Japan have suffered greatly, even years later, by this cruel act of nature. That is why the story of Kamome is so incredible. It is a story of strength, solidarity and resiliency...a celebration of continued life and the inspiration and hope we find as a people to live our lives with meaning following unimaginable loss.

This is the true story of a small boat that brought together two communities half a world apart, both having suffered destruction and loss from tsunamis. Kamome is the Japanese word for seagull, and was the boat used by Takata High School students in Rikuzentakata, Japan, to learn about ocean life and fishing. Following the tsunami, the boat was lost at sea with so much other debris, but due to its construction and buoyancy, it never sank to the bottom of the Pacific. Two years later, the currants took Kamome the west coast of the United States, and it was beached near Crescent City, California, a small town (my small town) on the very north coast of California. Crescent City had much in common with Rikuzentakata besides its beaches, mountains and evergreen trees. It was the only other city to have suffered devastation from the Japanese earthquake outside of Japan, doing about $1.5 million in damages. But it was the tsunami that followed the Alaska earthquake on Christmas Eve in 1964, and the loss of 13 lives that night, that caused the people of Crescent City to most closely identify with the citizens of Rikuzentakata in 2011. Both towns understood how earth's most powerful element could change lives in just a few minutes.

Not knowing anything about where it had come from, or really, what it even was (it was covered in barnacles whose necks were over a foot long!), many people traveled to the Crescent Beach to look the unusual boat that had washed up on its shores. The National Park Service called in book's co-author, Lori Dengler, a geologist at Humboldt State University, was called in to evaluate the boat. Del Norte High School Teacher Joyce Ruiz used the unusual situation as a learning moment, and took some high school students down to study Kamome. They had scraped enough barnacles off the boat to begin investigating from where this little boat had come. It was those students who decided that the boat should be returned to its home at Tanaka High School. Ms. Dengler contacted the other co-author, Amya Miller, to work with the Japanese government and the town of Rikuzentakata to facilitate the return, and so began an 18-month-long effort that became a message of inspiration, hope and resiliency to life's most trying challenges.

I read the book to a classroom full of third-graders, who were active listeners. Learning that the story was true impressed them even more. The vocabulary was appropriate, and there were many opportunities for prompts to access critical thinking skills, such as "have you ever slide back and forth in a tub? What does the water do?" to open the discussion about what causes tsunamis. I would have given the book five-stars, but there were a couple of disappointments. The story really could have dealt with the inspirational "overcoming the odds" kind of message, but was very factual and a little bit dry. But the reader can bring this into the reading, and overall, this book is a fascinating look at a very special event.

Lots of things to like about this book
By Beth L
I liked the story, the drawings, the vivid colors, and the bigger messages of communication across cultures. At the end, a section for parents and educators tells more of the story of the boat. Another section discusses how to talk to young children about disasters. This heart warming true story captures some of the poignancy of the tsunami and gives us a glimpse of what has happened since then.

A cross-cultural story in Japanese and English
By Elizabeth Morrison
This book is in both English and Japanese! Although not mentioned in the description, every page has Japanese text at the top and English at the bottom. Unfortunately, I have been told by a Japanese native speaker that it appears not to have been written by someone who knows Japanese well. That is the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. The story and the illustrations are wonderful. Thank you to the two authors, Lori Dengler and Amya Miller, and to the excellent artist, Amy Uyeki. Her pictures of the tsunami are the emotional center of the story, and it's a delight to see and read about the Japanese students of Takata High School and the American students of Del Norte High School, who have formed a long-lasting connection through the voyage of this little boat. The Japanese text on the cover says, "Let's be friends forever." Lovely, but I would like to know who wrote the Japanese text, and feel this should be mentioned somewhere in the book.
