`Sparky is a little clumsy, that's a fact'

Author Efrat Haddi, with excellent support from illustrator Abira Das, has written a fine little story about the value of thinking before acting, and the clever way she tells the story makes it remarkable and memorable for children. Efrat Haddi obviously understands children (she is a mother of 3!) as well as the techniques of teaching children concepts through stories. This is a very well written and illustrated book that should become a favorite bedtime story - with a lesson.

The little lad in the story is given a dog by his parents, he names the dog Sparky and soon discovers that Sparky is clumsy. He jumps on the bed, knocks over his sister's dolls with his wagging tail, spills his bowl of food, slipped on the floor and hit the cat, dug holes in the lawn, shakes in his bath getting the lad all wet, bumps into tress dislocating the squirrels. He asks his mother if Sparky's clumsiness is bad, and his mother wisely replies `We all are clumsy at times...we just need to think before we act so that we can be careful.'

Each book is dedicated to helping children and adults alike realize the beauty and the strength they possess on the inside; the beauty of a heart loved by God, and the strength that He instills in us from the inside out. Using real life stories and ideas that any child can relate to, Michelle captures the readers' attention immediately through her inspirational and colorful words represented through the eyes of a child. The author captured perfectly the desire that lies in each one of us to be truly loved, adored, and accepted and she brings home the fact that our Heavenly Father does all of those things regardless of who we are or what we have done. He loves us simply because.

The illustrator matched the feel and the flow of the story using bright and realistic pictures that add to the captivating story line. A perfect match for a story that is sure to resonate in the hearts of every boy and girl who has the opportunity to hear these touching stories.

In this beautifully illustrated story, Lovely Leah’s father helps her understand that “God makes you beautiful from the inside out. God’s love is what true beauty is all about.” When Leah despairs because she’s soiled her princess dress digging in the garden, Daddy shows her a seed—and the beauty hidden within.

Author Michelle Lazurek was inspired to write this story as she watched her three-year-old daughter and husband interact and realized every little girl wants to know she’s beautiful. The story contains a message all little girls need to hear: Regardless of their physical appearance, it is how they act that showcases true beauty.

In a world that stresses physical beauty, this book will boost a girl’s self esteem as she realizes God loves her unconditionally. A companion book for boys titled “Mommy, Am I Strong?” helps boys develop self-esteem based on making good choices and doing the right thing rather than basing their worth on physical strength. I am purchasing even more of these delightful books by Michelle S Lazurek. I have seven granddaughters and they are all getting these books for Christmas. We learn as we read this book that being beautiful starts deep inside us. Our actions, what we say, and do all are very important aspects of being beautiful. My oldest granddaughter was born with only a partial leg, I overheard her explain to an elderly man asking her what had happened to her leg, As only a 6 year old could give such a perfect, and very honest answer, she said, "I am perfect, this is the way God made me!". Physical, and outside appearances are not the only way to be beautiful. Its what is on the inside that counts! This book is such an easy way for girls of all ages to realize what being beautiful is all about! Every little girl is a Princess in God's eyes!

Best book on small scale quail keeping ever!

This book is very well written and covers just about every aspect of keeping quail on a small scale. It covers everything that you will need to know to start out and a lot more. I would highly recommend this book as the one to go to if you would like to try keeping a few of these fabulous creatures!

I'm a vegetarian who recently bought a home in an urban area and looking for methods of obtaining quality food by growing it myself. I liked all the detailed information followed by photographs. Very informative for those who are deciding to raise quail for eggs. Least favorite part is culling, but hey.

Delightful History

Lothar Muller’s White Magic: The Age of Paper joins a growing array of histories that focus on a manmade product or practice, custom or institution, tracing the discovery or invention of the subject and its changing roles through human history. Such histories are often fascinating in themselves as they illuminate unsuspected or obscure effects of the development of a familiar or commonplace object on the daily lives or social or political events and changes, exploring positive or negative impacts on human culture and civilization resulting from the subject of the book. Some such studies (Marshall McLuhan’s groundbreaking analyses of the impact of modern media, for example) become foundational, even as they are superseded by further scholarly and popular studies that develop or challenge their conclusions

Muller’s focus is on paper, as the subtitle suggests, and he engages the reader’s fascination as he presents the history of the invention—really inventions plural, since different peoples in different parts of the world developed and used paper in different ways early in its history—and the impact of the simple product we normally take for granted, whether we are writing a shopping list or a love letter, printing an essay from our word processor or recycling the week’s newspapers and food wrappers.

Muller’s prose style is sprightly and engaging, for the most part, but he inspires confidence in his scholarship and accuracy while providing information and illuminating historical connections. He examines the language of paper (we use paper when we are required to carry “papers,” though in recent times such documentation of identity has evolved toward forms that no longer appear with paper as the medium), the history of the manufacturing process and the changing qualities of paper made for various uses, the impact on communities and countries (and the environment) of the presence of paper factories and distributors, and he displays a wide and deep literary knowledge, tracing the appearances and functions of paper through a considerable (and appealing) variety of allusions from Medieval to modern and contemporary literary works.
Quite a few historians of “material culture” and “costume,” agricultural, manufacturing, and artistic developments, have provided insights into the impacts of human invention, especially, on human life. For this book, a helpful and very interesting companion volume might be Simon Garfield’s Just My Type: A History of Fonts, a somewhat lighter but informative and enjoyable study of the historical and economic contexts of the development of different typefaces, beginning with Gutenberg. This parallels parts of Muller’s study and pairing them offers insights into the role of publishing, especially, in history.

I would recommend this volume enthusiastically to anyone interested in the ways in which the development of paper contributed to and enhanced the history of modern civilization

At least one (myopic) reviewer dealt with this solely on the basis of its criticisms of McLuhan. Too bad!

This book is highly original and eye-opening, dispelling many myths that are routinely taught about the emergence and development of the printed word. An essential resource for anyone interested in the histories of technology or communication.

Eurocentric string of vignettes, mostly of literary texts

There are interesting discussions of a number of writers (all in the western tradition, though paper was invented in China) in “White Magic” but I was disappointed by the book as a history. It has not much about markets, not much about uses other than reproducing texts (hand copying and printing). There is a bit about playing cards, but nothing about business cards. There is a section on collecting “autographs,” but mostly in the sense of hand-written manuscripts with nothing at all about signed first editions.

I balk at the very title: paper is not necessarily white (wrapping paper is mentioned but not enough to rate an entry in the index); no one seems to have regarded it as magical, and the delineation of boundaries for “THE age of paper” are not made (Müller argues that it is not over). Müller insists that the history of paper is not confined to printing (any “Gutenberg Galaxy” of “typographic man” between any “manuscript culture” and the “electronic age” for storage and circulation of information, primarily texts).

I also balk at the length of many of the paragraphs and repeatedly wondered why Müller was writing about this or that particular author (Rabelais and Cervantes, Melville and Henry James, Balzac and Dickens yes, and he’s German, so Goethe must be considered; but William Gaddis, George Lichtenberg, Paul Valéry, et al., no). Müller does not mention the just deceased Benedict Anderson’s thesis about the importance of vernacular literature in imagining communities/nations, and barely considers the world beyond Anglo North America and western Europe after paper ceased to depend on transportation along the Silk Road.

About the Author
David Gledhill joined the Royal Air Force as a Navigator in 1973. After training, he flew the F4 Phantom on squadrons in the UK and West Germany. He was one of the first aircrew to fly the F2 and F3 Air Defence Variant of the Tornado on its acceptance into service and served for many years as an instructor on the Operational Conversion Units of both the Phantom and the Tornado. He commanded the Tornado Fighter Squadron in the Falkland Islands and has worked extensively with the Armed Forces of most NATO nations.

A quick-paced, thrilling "what-if" story

This latest novel by Dave Gledhill sees the Phantom crew of his earlier novel, 'Defector', being deployed to the Falklands Islands, just a few years after the 1982 conflict with Argentina. An Argentinian pilot wants revenge for his fellow pliots who died there; there is a shady character at the service of the Governor of the Islands that is selling secrets to Argentina. Dave gives a nice overview of the service in the RAF Phantom squadron deployed there, and the air-air combat description is nice. Though a fiction, Dave's knowledge being a retired RAF navigator who flew in Phantoms over there gives the reader the impression that it could have happened. i thoroughly enjoyed reading it!

It's a great story about British airmen, their support troops and a rouge pilot help-bent on revenge, going back to the Falklands to make his point, but "Revenge is never sweet" and things go horribly wrong. Another Great Addition to the Series

This is a great middle school book as long as you've read the other two first. Also, each book in this series requires a considerable suspension of reality. The writing is adequate, although there were some editing mistakes in this volume. However, they weren't apparent until we read it a second time as a family, which tells you how good this book was. I hope there is more in this series, because sometimes we all need reality to be suspended.

About the Author

Linda Ridley wrote The Journey of Lucinda Jane: A Rescued Doll Story after she rescued an antique doll that had been damaged, discarded, and scorned. Ridley restored the doll and began researching how such a toy may have fallen into a state of disrepair. The result is a touching picture book about love and redemption.

Ridley has been married for nearly forty years and lives near Toledo, Ohio. She holds a bachelor’s degree in education and taught in the public school system for several years before homeschooling her four children. She is an avid doll collector who spends her time not only restoring dolls, but researching the history of these wonderful toys. A devout Christian, she believes that anyone, no matter how damaged, can be redeemed through God’s love.

A beautiful, unique story

A beautiful, unique story. Many wonderful illustrations, some full page. I highly recommend this - a good bedtime or anytime story for young and old alike. I would think the oldest generation, who are often overlooked, would also greatly enjoy this book .

touching story about a beloved toy

The Journey of Lucinda Jane is a well written book. It would have appeal to several different groups of students. It's a touching story about a beloved toy, it suggests a certain amount of history, of the inference of immigration, the craft of repairing an antique, and the persistent human desire to be loved and repaired if things go wrong in life. The pictures are all of real objects such as buildings, toys, ships and railroads in American history.
The reading level is for about an 8-year old, but could be used to inspire research on American history of transportation or architecture, antiques, and different cultures in America at the fifth grade level.

Excellent Childhood Storybook

This is a very sweet story that my girls and I love. A very classic story line of a doll who is very well loved, but over the course of a century becomes neglected and damaged. The historical facts are interesting and the photos of the doll's transformation are captivating. Whether you're a doll lover, art lover, history lover, or just like a good story, this book has it all. Looking forward to more doll stories for my girls from this author.

The Distracted Reader

I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a book as much as this while disagreeing with practically everything the author said. In Words Onscreen linguistics professor Naomi Baron details her concerns about the effect that digital devices are having on reading and learning. One of her arguments is that reading a book deeply, with no distractions, enables you to have a conversation with the author, which is less likely when the internet is only a finger swipe away. I read Words Onscreen on an iPad with an internet connection and can assure Professor Baron that I had many conversations with her as I read the book.

Baron concedes that certain kinds of reading are better for onscreen reading than others. Newspapers and airport novels that are read once and discarded fit into that category. But she thinks that textbooks and literature require more concentration -- concentration that is undermined when reading pixels rather than ink on paper. She cites many studies and cites many of her students in their preference for paper over screens.

In making her case, Baron throws every possible argument against digital reading, not just the distraction argument. You see this in some court cases, where there is an airtight case for manslaughter, but the prosecution goes for murder one, assault, illegal possession of a weapon, and tax evasion. The defense picks away at the weak edges of the case, and the jury acquits because they now have doubts about the whole case.

So we get charts and statistics, but we also get the serendipity of browsing in a bookstore, the smell of the book, the ability to collect and lend books, and have them autographed. I'm sure we've all been down the rabbit-hole of an internet search and that can be as serendipitous as a bookstore browse. As for the smell of the book, well, if I can smell a book, I toss it because it's mildewed or has cigaret smoke on it. The smell of paper and ink I find to be as subtle as the scent of a Kindle. The number of books I plan to re-read is quite small and even if I want to read a book again in five years, I feel confident I can find it again in a bookstore or online rather than lugging it around with me through two or three moves.

Some of the arguments have a recycled feel about them as well. In her concern that young people will lose the ability to socialize face-to-face after excessive internet socializing, Baron echoes the arguments of parents after the invention of the telephone. Her arguments about internet distractions while reading sound much like the worries over whether TV should be allowed while students are doing their homework. Even if you could eliminate all distractions, students (or drivers or neurosurgeons) will still find themselves daydreaming or suddenly remembering to make that dentist appointment just when they should be concentrating.

One concern I do share is that of privacy and the fact that Amazon or Apple or Kobo or The New York Times or the National Security Agency can monitor what you are looking at and how much time you spend on certain pages.

I did quite enjoy Words Onscreen and it certainly inspired me to think about what it means to read and even what a book is. It's been the subject of a lot of conversation around our house the past few days and it's a subject that is going to continue to get people talking for some years to come. I don't expect print books to go away a la buggy whips. I think they'll be more like the radio, which did not disappear with the advent of talking movies or television, or even now with podcasts and Spotify. The paperless office never arrived, and paperless books won't kill off the print book. The important choice we have is not which format to read in, but whether we think what we are reading is worth our attention.

An engaging but problematic analysis of e-reading

While this book is an interesting exploration of a knotty, controversial topic, I think there is a deep flaw with Baron's argument. In essence, her study, and much of the research she cites, boils down to variants on the question, "Do you prefer vanilla or chocolate ice cream?"

If you ask me, I'm going to answer "Vanilla" 100% of the time. But if, say, I'm someone who doesn't have access to vanilla, it doesn't mean I won't still happily accept chocolate. There is inherent bias in posing the question as an "either/or" between the two flavors, as it prods me to pay more attention to what I like and dislike about them.

The same bias afflicts the oft-posed question, "Do you prefer print or electronic reading?" As Baron notes, there is indeed much evidence showing that students will tend to answer "print" when asked this question. When asked to elaborate, they will tend to give rationalizations for their choice - a choice that was forced upon them by an overly restrictive binary dichotomy. Ironically, there is much other evidence cited by Baron which would suggest that the picture is much murkier. She notes that students in different cultures have different takes on the digital/print distinction. Amongst anectodal evidence, we encounter occasional comments from people who strongly feel that reading online has no negative effects on their ability to concentrate on sustained reading.

Another flaw in the author's research is that much of it relies on self-reporting. When you ask a subject whether they think they remember more with print or with digital, a question that is already vague (and afflicted with the false dichotomy) becomes prone to hazy rationalizations and imaginings.

The book portrays e-books as new-fangled harbingers of our society's slow descent into constant distraction. The problem is that Baron doesn't just focus on her central argument - that e-books are inherently distracting, and that they inherently complement a digital culture that is becoming more fast-paced. She instead prefers to throw everything including the kitchen sink at the very notion of digital reading. So we get unnecessary detours into the smell of books; their value as heirlooms; the ability to purchase them without credit cards, free from prying government or corporate eyes; and the aesthetic appeal of owning a physical object that you can point to on your shelf. All of which are completely peripheral to what Baron should have focused on: pinning down her main claim that digital reading is somehow inherently distracting.

One distinction that much research in this field glosses over is that it uses a monolithic concept - "digital reading" - to describe practices that are often quite varied. For example, the question, "Are you more prone to multitasking when reading in print or online?" This question is invalid because it presupposes the answer. Of course more people are prone to multitasking online - because they "read" their online banking statements, their emails, their social media posts, and other more disposable online content. It does NOT then follow that reading online involves multitasking as a necessary corollary.

There are positives of this book. Even if you disagree with it, the author assembles a broad group of arguments that one can chew over. Some of her points were quite good, such as the disturbing finding that eyestrain is a common complaint among those who try to read online for sustained periods. However, overall I really feel like this book tried to accomplish too much, and oversold its case. These issues are still very much open to further exploration.

A great read, very informative

The question Baron picks up in the volume is whether “digital reading is reshaping our understanding of what it means to read.” (xii) She goes on to argue “that digital reading is fine for many short pieces or light content we don’t intend to analyze or reread.” (xii) Her conclusion is that digital reading is here to stay, but so is reading in print. Each has a niche in the publishing world and the academic world. Thus the future is a complementary coexistence rather than extinction of one or the other.

Baron begins with a state of the book address, where she lays out the history of the rise of the e-book and the shift in print publishing. She then provides a history of reading that will make a lover of reading swoon. This chapter is really worth the price of the book. In the third chapter she discusses the impact that e-reading is having on writing styles, where media are moving to punchier, shorter chunks. (This is why my blog is almost never longer than 800 words.) This is a chapter that is historiographic, again, very enjoyable for one who loves reading.
In Chapter Four Baron explains the attraction to reading onscreen, for those that appreciate it. She is fair in presenting the strongest arguments for that form of reading. Still she notes that e-books and e-readers may not be as green as claimed, particularly since most people don’t simply dispose of their hard copy books, but often resell them, lend them, and pass them down. She also notes that one does not really own an e-book, but is merely accessing its information. The more significant concern she notes is that retention in onscreen reading tends to be lower. Still, she find strengths of the medium and promotes them.

What comes of the discussion is that onscreen reading is more suitable for one-off reading. Though annotation methods are improving in e-books, they still lag significantly behind the marginalia of trusty paper copies. In Chapter Six, Baron discusses the phenomena of social reading, which began with the book club and has progressed to sharing quotes through Goodreads and other platforms. This sometimes helps people get through books, but it often keeps students from approaching texts as cleanly.

Baron dwells on one of the most significant downsides of e-books in her seventh chapter. This is the fact that people feel there is something lacking from the aesthetic experience of reading a book on a screen. It just isn’t the same as reading a real book. It is the loss of the sensory aspect of reading that has some young people hooked on paper books. And then, there is the fact that a print book has no games or apps. There is no chance that an e-mail will pop up or Facebook will demand one’s attention in the background of a paper book. Studies continue to show that some of these real issues continue to make real books a better option for deep reading.

Despite its shortcomings for some uses, Baron concludes that onscreen reading is here to stay as a complement to reading on paper. Her case is compelling and winsomely argued. The ability to get a vast number of resources online is extremely helpful for quick research. At the same time, the ability to annotate, spatially associate, and focus on a tangible object are essential for deep reading. Both forms of readings have a purpose and both are here to stay.

I enjoyed this book immensely. Not just because I agree with her conclusions, but because it was well-written, well researched and accessible. If you are a bookish sort of person, then put this volume on your to-be-read list. But buy it in paper copy because it is worth reading deeply and well.
