Great Read! RECOMMENED

I bought this book a few weeks back and could not put it down. It is a fun read that draws your attention to the vast changes in the way our children live today. The author brings us back to the days when people spent their lives outside their homes playing in the school yards, the local parks and in the streets of their communities. It is an eye opener that got me thinking about my life and my children's lives. I had a hard time putting this book down and purposely prolonged reading it, wishing to squeeze just one more story out of this author. My sense of pride in my own grow up was awoken on this journey. Like the author growing up was a struggle and made us into who we are today. There was no one coddling us. We grew up with little but we had more then what our parents had growing up. The streets of Queens NY were not nice to the new kid from Italy and his lack of spoken English. Instead of being angry for having to complete his school classes in English the author was grateful no one made it easy for him. It built his character and helped define his work ethic and belief in himself. It was a rough time. Not a time where every kid who played a sport got a trophy whether won or lost. It was time when a kid would never accept a trophy if he had not actually deserved it buy winning. No one wanted a second place trophy they wanted it all. This was a time of Pride, Freedom and Privacy. Giorgio helped to awaken that in me. The sense of pride in the journey from where I came. A powerful sense of autonomy resounds between these book covers. The idea's of friendship, loyalty personal responsibility, personal growth, pride, private property, Freedom, Liberty, self empowerment, self fulfillment and community make you wonder what the heck happened here? What have we created and why? The things we held as precious and dear to our hearts today we question and reject because it does not square up with the three inch by three inch Establishment Media opinion card-so we have abandoned it for the new cookie cutter approach to living because we are all exactly the same with the same beliefs and experiences. We have stripped away the dignity of being a human being. Children are no longer allowed to be human: to spontaneously explore, play and grow without some template of rule after rule after rule. Why not just put foam on all the side walks, streets and play grounds so no one ever gets injured. I remember walking into a party at 14, a pair of sun glasses on my face covering a black eye. I was bested by a guy I opened my mouth up too. A young girl ran up to me and swiped the glasses off my face and said "oooh you have a black eye." I tried to grab the glasses she said "why hide your black eye it makes you look sexy". I said it does not. She said "yeah it really does" I got a kiss that night from that girl. Today a kid gets suspended from school if he protects himself from a guy bullying him. I hope Giorgio is correct in his assessment of this country but when kids playing with plastic guns are a threat-when hockey and football are barbaric things of the past then yes, we have wandered far off the course of reality. In a country where Men are no longer allowed to be men-where boxing and self defense is no longer accepted and celebrated but suspect you have too wonder where this all going? We no longer give our children the chance to learn without a microscope over them. The new term in books is is Free Range parenting and what is very scary is that parents are loosing their kids because they give them the freedom to explore and play? Isn't that just how we all grew up-were we not all Free Range kids? We knew no other way. Today you are an unfit parent if you allow your kids the grow up you had. This book is magnificent! Makes you think and I think the author hopes it will ignite more then just thoughts! RECOMMENDED READING!

Great read! A story of a coming to America that really brought back some memories and stories that my grandparents told me from their travels. Highly recommended, a perfect book for spending a nice afternoon sitting outside!
