PreSchool-Grade 1 A simple, imaginative tale of how the first domestication of a wild animal may have occurred. Kip, a cave boy living at the end of the Ice Age, is followed on his journey home by a Paleowolf, who, smelling the boy's roasted Woolly Rhino bones, begs for a treat. Each time the boy stops to rest and eat, the wolf hound senses danger and flees, saving the boy's life, too. After Paleowolf warns him of a fearsome Saber-Toothed Cat, the boy makes a deal with himhe will exchange some of his food for the animal's protective senses. The book's glorious watercolor illustrations will attract young prehistory enthusiasts, for amidst the melting ice floes roam the mighty Mammoth, the Wild Horse, the Woolly Rhino and other denizens of the Pleistocene period. Each scene appears on a ``canvas'' stretched across two pages. Borders show wood and stone carvings, cave paintings, and artifacts. Side panels on several illustrations show the dangers that Kip avoids by heeding Paleowolf's warnings. This is another of Brett's lavish offerings, intricately designed and filled with eye-catching detail. However, it is a fabricated story told with authority, featuring a modern-looking boy amidst authentic-looking animals and scenery. Wonderful Book

The First Dog is truely a wonderful book. I run a day care and this book is the favorite of all the children. We have all of Jan Brett's book yet this one remains the most requested. Thank you Jan Brett for bringing so much pleasure to so many children!

WOW! EXCELLENT STORY! WONDERFUL ART! GREAT GIFT OF ANY AGE!

To date this is my favorite of all of Jan's Bretts wonderful books! It's beautiful and it tells a heart warming story!
Brett's artwork (as usual) is tremondous! The action is so real you can't help but exclaim at the turn of every page (even if you're an adult)! In addition Brett's technique of putting clues as to what will happen next in the borders of each picture also helps build the suspense. My 5-year-old quickly spys a tusk on one page's border and shouts "Oh no! Look out Kip a Big Mammoth is coming! Hey wolf! Warn Kip that a Big Mammoth is coming!" My boy couldn't be more into the story if he is was Kip himself. The best part of the border art is that it is very thematic. For example on the saber-toothed tiger page there are carved figurines and cave art of saber-tooths based on actual archeological finds! I wish I could give 5 stars but saber-tooth cats didn't really climb trees...
I'm usually very critical of children's books & movies. In my opinion too many are either boring, plotless, or hopelessly inaccurate. Don't get me wrong, I love fantasy and other imaginitive works. But, for example elephants don't drink through their trunks like a straw! So why do we tell/show kids that they do?
Thankfully Brett would not make such an insulting mistake (saber-tooth in a tree is excuseable). This story is told so well, I assume that Brett actually did some serious research about Dog Domestication (she even uses the word Pleistocene!). The wolf befriends Kip the Cave Boy not just because it would make a cute story, but because Kip and the wolf have many things in common and while acting in each others self-interest they unite against common problems. AT LAST! Accurate Anthropology & Biology in a kid's book that KIDS ACTUALLY ENJOY!

About the Author

Jim Halderman brings a world of experience, knowledge, and talent to his work. His automotive service experience includes working as a flat-rate technician, a business owner, and a professor of automotive technology at a leading U.S. community college for more than 20 years.

 

He has a Bachelor of Science degree from Ohio Northern University and a Master’s degree in Education from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Jim also holds a U.S. Patent for an electronic transmission control device. He is an ASE certified Master Automotive Technician and is also Advanced Engine Performance (L1) ASE certified. Jim is the author of many automotive textbooks, all published by Pearson Education.

 

Jim has presented numerous technical seminars to national audiences, including the California Automotive Teachers (CAT) and the Illinois College Automotive Instructor Association (ICAIA). He is also a member and presenter at the North American Council of Automotive Teachers (NACAT). Jim was also named Regional Teacher of the Year by General Motors Corporation and outstanding alumni of Ohio Northern University.

This picture-book biography covers basic information about Wells’ life: her birth in slavery in 1862; her outstanding ability as a student; and her work as a teacher, journalist, and crusader. Myers’ masterful text is well matched by Christensen’s somber watercolor illustrations: neither soft-pedals the injustice and cruelty to African Americans. Wells’ stand against lynching and the peril in which that put her are covered, but there are no graphic scenes in the illustrations. The explanations of some complex topics, such as suffrage, are seamlessly woven into the narrative, while others—for instance, segregation—are not. What will come across to young readers, however, is how she helped make America a better place. Great Read! RECOMMENED

I bought this book a few weeks back and could not put it down. It is a fun read that draws your attention to the vast changes in the way our children live today. The author brings us back to the days when people spent their lives outside their homes playing in the school yards, the local parks and in the streets of their communities. It is an eye opener that got me thinking about my life and my children's lives. I had a hard time putting this book down and purposely prolonged reading it, wishing to squeeze just one more story out of this author. My sense of pride in my own grow up was awoken on this journey. Like the author growing up was a struggle and made us into who we are today. There was no one coddling us. We grew up with little but we had more then what our parents had growing up. The streets of Queens NY were not nice to the new kid from Italy and his lack of spoken English. Instead of being angry for having to complete his school classes in English the author was grateful no one made it easy for him. It built his character and helped define his work ethic and belief in himself. It was a rough time. Not a time where every kid who played a sport got a trophy whether won or lost. It was time when a kid would never accept a trophy if he had not actually deserved it buy winning. No one wanted a second place trophy they wanted it all. This was a time of Pride, Freedom and Privacy. Giorgio helped to awaken that in me. The sense of pride in the journey from where I came. A powerful sense of autonomy resounds between these book covers. The idea's of friendship, loyalty personal responsibility, personal growth, pride, private property, Freedom, Liberty, self empowerment, self fulfillment and community make you wonder what the heck happened here? What have we created and why? The things we held as precious and dear to our hearts today we question and reject because it does not square up with the three inch by three inch Establishment Media opinion card-so we have abandoned it for the new cookie cutter approach to living because we are all exactly the same with the same beliefs and experiences. We have stripped away the dignity of being a human being. Children are no longer allowed to be human: to spontaneously explore, play and grow without some template of rule after rule after rule. Why not just put foam on all the side walks, streets and play grounds so no one ever gets injured. I remember walking into a party at 14, a pair of sun glasses on my face covering a black eye. I was bested by a guy I opened my mouth up too. A young girl ran up to me and swiped the glasses off my face and said "oooh you have a black eye." I tried to grab the glasses she said "why hide your black eye it makes you look sexy". I said it does not. She said "yeah it really does" I got a kiss that night from that girl. Today a kid gets suspended from school if he protects himself from a guy bullying him. I hope Giorgio is correct in his assessment of this country but when kids playing with plastic guns are a threat-when hockey and football are barbaric things of the past then yes, we have wandered far off the course of reality. In a country where Men are no longer allowed to be men-where boxing and self defense is no longer accepted and celebrated but suspect you have too wonder where this all going? We no longer give our children the chance to learn without a microscope over them. The new term in books is is Free Range parenting and what is very scary is that parents are loosing their kids because they give them the freedom to explore and play? Isn't that just how we all grew up-were we not all Free Range kids? We knew no other way. Today you are an unfit parent if you allow your kids the grow up you had. This book is magnificent! Makes you think and I think the author hopes it will ignite more then just thoughts! RECOMMENDED READING!

Great read! A story of a coming to America that really brought back some memories and stories that my grandparents told me from their travels. Highly recommended, a perfect book for spending a nice afternoon sitting outside!

About the Author
As a full-time practicing dentist in Jacksonville North Carolina and mother of five children, Dr. Gina Mancini knows the challenges that we face to help our children keep their teeth and gums healthy. Dr. Mancini was asked several years ago to speak at a local elementary school during dental health month. She decided that instead of taking models and poster boards into the classroom, she would write a play about Tabitha the Tooth and the choices she makes to keep her teeth and gums healthy. With the help of her amazing staff, they went on to entertain and educate many children over the next three years. In 2014, Dr. Mancini decided to turn her play into a book. With the help of this book and the Tabitha the Tooth doll, Dr. Mancini hopes to inspire your children to keep their teeth and gums healthy.

I'm a dental hygienist and highly recommend this book. I bought it to do a presentation for my daughters class and found it very educational and fun at the same time. Geared towards all age groups, I will definatly be using this for many year's to come. Thank you Dr. Mancini!!!

Clear - Well-designed - Excellent Photos

THIS IS A GREAT BOOK! I absolutely love this "Workbench How-to" book. This is definitely a HANDS-ON type of book. The author and editors really know how to make a book readable and useful. Some group has spent a TON of time laying out this book, and making it easy for the reader.

As just one example, illustration #56, "Keep Parts Organized" in Chapter 2 is a photo showing a lot of parts, stored neatly, in order, in a plastic tree. Excellent tip! The photos are very high quality, as is the book in general.

Honestly, I can only think of good things to say about this book. Highly Recommend!

By far the best engine rebuilding book I have seen yet. Plenty of high-quality pictures to make the instructions easy to understand. Covers lots of different motors. I would highly recommend this book to anyone to read before they begin their rebuilding project.

A good garage addition

All of Larry Schriebs books are pretty thorough and can be trusted to deliver as promised. The info is standard and not really new but then again I am an old hotrodder who has seen most of what this book contains many times over. The SA books are all very good.
