I recommend it for young and old and hope you enjoy ...

From the very first few paragraphs, I was pulled in to the story. I have a propensity for strange and mysterious things, and the anonymous, strange-world traveling owner, and his other-worldly companion piqued my interest right away. Where had they been? What had they seen? Why were they here? I quickly developed quite a strong attachment to TP, and I won't give away anything, but suffice to say that if I hadn't been holding the book, I'd have been biting my fingers in suspense and worry several times!! It may be a book aimed at young adults but I found it quite on the level with C.S. Lewis' "Chronicles of Narnia", Madeline L'Engle's "A Wrinkle in Time, and Norton Juster's "The Phantom Tollbooth", in the sense that it was geared toward younger readers on the surface, but contained so many more, and deeper concepts underneath. Universal truths. I found myself looking forward to reading more each day, and it's a very quick read as well. The pace never flags. I recommend it for young and old and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

A Funny and Thrilling Read for Kids of All Ages

As a bookstore manager, I sometimes break down and read a young reader book so I can recommend something other than King of the Wind (one of the favorites from my youth) to parents and grandparents looking for that special book. Maybe they are trying to get their children and/or grandchildren interested in reading. The Pet, aka TP is the perfect character to accomplish this. What is he exactly? I don't think it's necessary for us to know. He grows on the reader just as he grows on Willy Hunter and their escapades are flat out fun to read. Kids will love this book and if you're an adult who used to fantasize about your very own pet to share adventures with, you'll love it as well.

About the Author
Margaret Hillert has written over 80 books for children who are just learning to read. Her books have been translated into many languages and have helped children throughout the world learn to read. She first started writing poetry as a child and has continued to write for children and adults throughout her life. As a first grade teacher, Margaret realized that the books available for students just learning to read were beyond their comprehension. She then began to write her easy readers and poetry for children. Her first collection of poetry Father Than Far was published in 1969. Her many awards include the Chicago Children's Reading Round Table Annual Award for outstanding contributions to the field of children's literature. Other honors include the David W. Longe Prize and the Michigan Bookwoman of the Year Award. A teacher for 34 years, she is now retired and lives in Michigan where she continues to write stories and poetry.

This is a cute early reader book with bright, ...

This is a cute early reader book with bright, colorful illustrations of multi-racial children and their colorful small dragon friend touring an aquarium. They see many, many, many animals and fish. The book ends with reading reinforcement lessons for parents to do with their children including phonics, vocabulary and fluency. I think the book is cute and should appeal to young readers. I received this book free to review from Netgalley.

One thing I did before writing my review of this book was I read it to my nephew who is now in the second grade. I also let him read it to me and when we were finished we talked about the pictures, the words, and whether or not he actually enjoyed the story.

So on a cold, Sunday afternoon me and my nephew sat on the couch together and read the book. He snuggled up to me and we enjoyed the whole 7 minutes together reading about Dear Dragon's trip to the aquarium--alternating who read between the pages. Of course he enjoyed the story and he enjoyed the artwork. I asked him what he didn't like and he said 'the sharks'; I asked, 'why?' And he replied, 'Because they eat people.' His favorite part was the goldfish--but I was unable to get out of him exactly why he liked the goldfish. It could be that he's 7 and just liked the goldfish. Finally, he was able to read it with little effort. So if this book is rated for K-2, it might be too low for those at the high-end of second grade. In some instances, this might be too low for those more advanced first grade readers also. I think each teacher will need to assess if the book is appropriate for a student; although, to be sure, one can't practice too much even with 'easy' books.

Personally, I like the artwork. It depicts happy people at an aquarium enjoying and afternoon or morning looking at various animals that might live at an aquarium including penguins, catfish, sharks, and more. I like very much that there is an adult guiding the children through the aquarium and teaching them about all that they are seeing and I also like the play on words with the various names for fish: cat, clown, gold, and star. This is a fun way to involve the student and help them make predictions and also requires a bit of pre-knowledge in order to make such predictions. Students shouldn't have too much trouble with this exercise. Finally, this book will be helpful in practicing sight/high-frequency words.

At the end of the book there is a section featuring Reading Reinforcement practices for teachers to use in group work or for students to practice on their own with a parent or other. Some of the exercises are phonemic awareness, fluency, and comprehension--all important things for young and emergent readers to practice. I am glad this section is included because, personally, I love to build curriculum and academic games around literature. Having some ideas built into the book is helpful in that regard.

I have two small complaints about the book that I am, frankly, not sure how to handle. First, on page 22 there is a picture of dolphins and the text says, "Look at these fish." Well, in fact, dolphins are not fish. It bothers me that I am clearly looking at dolphins and the text calls them fish. I think this should be corrected. Second, on page 26, the text says, "Oh, I see. I see gold fish." This one is sketchy because I am not sure if the author is saying, "Oh, look at the gold fish" or if the author is saying, "Oh, look at the goldfish." If students are being asked to look at a particular species of fish then it should be written 'goldfish'; if, on the other hand, students are being asked to look at fish that are gold, then it's fine. So I'm not sure what to do about the second issue because I'm not sure the author's intent (even though the teacher in the story is looking at a school of goldfish. The first issue, though, is clearly wrong: dolphins are not fish.

The story reminds me a little of The Magic School Bus which is a good thing. Overall, I enjoyed the story and the useful text and the play on words. It's a good thinking book and the reading is easy enough (although I think it's rated too low for higher readers who may not enjoy the textual simplicity. I should also note that this story is part of a larger series of stories featuring Dear Dragon--when I checked it was 14 stories.

About the Author
Mario Picayo was born in Cuba. As a child he and his family moved to Puerto Rico and later to the United States Virgin Islands. He is the author of A Very Smart Cat; Four Wishes for Robbie; Fun, Fun, One Crab on the Run, and The Shark and the Parrotfish and Other Caribbean Fables. Besides writing children's books Mario is also a published photographer with over thirty individual exhibits. He lives in New York.

A must read for children and grown-ups alike.

Mario Picayo's A Caribbean Journey from A to Y creates a sincere, helpful template for readers as they navigate the Caribbean Islands using the alphabet as their guide from letters A to Y (leaving the reader in suspense wondering where the Z has gone to). Each letter serves as a looking glass into Caribbean culture by representing its rich vegetation, diverse array of animals, and, most importantly the great people that inhabit these islands. While the alphabet guides the reader, Earleen Griswold's illustrations supplement the text with their lush, vivid colors that are diverse as the Caribbean itself. Bright hues of vibrant blues skies, colorful fish, and hot orange suns catch the eyes as well as the imagination. The story supplies the reader with factual and historical insight in addition to instilling a sense of great pride by uniting the Caribbean Islands by way of highlighting their origins to their African roots. I highly recommend this book especially for reading to children. The striking illustrations and enriching text are perfect for showing the little ones. A great read for children and grown-ups alike.

Ein Schöner Band

Für Preis, Inhalt, Kompaktheit und schöne Lesbarkeit ist dieser Band wunderbar. Deutschlernende (wie ich) sollten auch darauf aufmerksam sein, dass "Gesammelte Werke" nicht "Collected Works" oder "Sämtliche Werke" heisst, sondern "Selected Works." Dieser Band ist eher einem "Portable" Band Penquins ähnlich. Wenn Sie ein spezivisches Werk Zweigs suchen, sollten Sie das Inhaltsverzeichniss überprüfen. Im Fall dieses Bandes liegt Zweigs Meisterstück, "Ungeduld des Herzens" nicht drin.

I have yet to read much of this. Regardless, the film,"The Grand Budapest Hotel" was based on Zweig's writing. He was a truly great author of Jewish extraction at the wrong time. He and his wife committed suicide together to avoid falling under the Nazi regime just before the WWII ended. His writing is witty, oblique in a Viennese way, funny and wise.

Super Series, Major Plot Twist

Happiness and joy descended upon our household when the most recent Droon installment arrived. While my son and I are avid consumers of serial chapter books, the Secrets of Droon remains our favorite. Fortunately, number 9, which introduces a huge plot twist, did not disappoint. For the first eight installments, the bold young adventurers from the upper world -- Eric, Julie, and Neal -- have teamed with the Junior Wizard, Princess Keeah of Droon, to reign in the evil aspirations of the dastardly Lord Sparr. In The Tower of the Elf King, however, Lord Sparr is notably absent, and our young friends confront a new, surprisingly complicated foe, Gryndl. In addition to Gryndl, plus some old friends (particularly Kahn, King of the Purple Lumpies -- long my son's favorite), our friends meet The Maker, whose inventions feature prominently in the story line. Experienced Droon readers will be pleased to learn more of the illusive, shape-shifting Queen Relna, at the same time remaining wary of Sparr's eventual return. Once again, it's refreshing that the author does not weigh down the narrative rehashing prior adventures, but, for this reason, it's probably best to begin with the first book in the series. Once your kids begin, it won't be long before they'll be joining us in anticipation of the tenth installment!

My favrorite Lumpie book

I liked this book because it is funny. My favrorite character is the Lumpies because in book #2 Neal thought the Lumpies were pillows. Phew, Eric didn't dream of banging a garbage can. Neal didn't dream of sitting in the middle of a pizza and eating his way out to the crust. I loved reading this book because it is really good. I wonder what Keeah's mother will be in the next book. This is my favrorite Secrets of Droon so far I think I will like #10. Secrets of Droon is my favrorite kind of book. I would recommend this book to you. If you get this book you should get #1 because the stories connect. All of the books are good. They all have a happy ending. You should get all of the Secret of Droons.

Eric, Julie and Neal all dreamed about very weird things, which could only be from one place, Droon. Droon was the magical world they had found, and the secret entrance happened to be in Eric's basement! When they get there, there's a rumor flying around that someone's robbed the Lumpie's village! Eric, Julie, Neal and Princess Keeah must find the culprit, but do they? This book was absolutely spectacular! Read the TOWER of the ELF KING!

Author’s Bio Liam O’ Flynn has been an English teacher in St. Aidan’s Community College in Cork for the past twenty years. In that time, he has taught to a whole range of abilities and ages with considerable success. He is 43 years of age and single but in a long term relationship. A resident of Clonmel, he is a dedicated member of the writers’ group there. Liam’s interests are: descriptive writing, nature walks, golf and fishing. He keeps a log of the birds who visit his garden, as one does, and has reached the grand total of 32 species. To the peregrine falcon and the sparrow hawk, species number 31 and 32, he has only two words: go away. His next book shall be an adventure/fantasy book for teenagers.

This book will seriously improve your creative writing.
It will also improve your vocabulary - it has mine, I even keep a `vocabulary notebook' now. It is ideal for students at any level of ability, as it guides the student through five levels of skill by classifying words in grids, and providing copious examples of five levels of descriptive writing from Basic Sentences (Level 1) to Complex Writing (Level 5). The author also explains how to plan your writing with the grids.

All five of the sensory modalities (VAKOG) are presented throughout - Visual, Auditory, Kinaesthetic, Olfactory, and Gustatory. So, everyone's dominant learning modality is included.
It is easy to see how useful this book is for teachers, parents, students of English, and for novices like me who have only just begun dipping a tentative toe in the sparkling and stimulating pool of creative writing.

The various narrative styles of writing are described simply and comprehensively.
Figures of speech are defined and described, and the author provides numerous examples of each. He also flags the use of these figures of speech in the sample essays of the five Levels of descriptive writing. The use of examples throughout is fundamental to the student's progress towards looking at the world with an `artist's eye'.
And there is much, much more.

Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, right at the end of the book we are presented with a treasure trove of 200 magical words, and as a bonus, the most beautiful word in the English language! The exercise suggested by the author using these magical words will definitely improve your English skills.

Very impressed with this!

I bought both the Writing with Stardust book and workbook and as a package they are excellent.
I love the way the books are designed in grids of 10 words. It makes it
really user friendly and so simple to learn from. The essays
are really impressive and are packed with unique and original expressions a lot
of which were completely new to me. For example "the monk hum of the bees" is very creative.
There are a lot of useful tips and techniques on how to write as well as what to write.
I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to improve and enhance their writing skills.
It's a very clever book and I loved it.

All of Sir Batson's books are well written and full of fun, and this one was no different

The Misadventures of Strylun and Xerk was a humorous and adventurous read that had me laughing on several occasions. All of Sir Batson's books are well written and full of fun, and this one was no different. It amazed me how much was fit into a short story, and what made it even better were the subtle hints that it took place in one of his already established book-worlds, not to mention one of my favorites at that. This was a great read, and like all of his other books I highly recommend it!
