This book is SO WORTH IT!

Kim was actually my professor for a course at my university and she is amazing! Most of our assignments took place outside of class, so we really had to rely on the book, but the book is broken down so that everything is easily understandable! The book has everything you need in regards to surface design. Lots of pictures and easily readable.

As founder of the Bortz Auto Collection, that owns about 90% of the Motorama cars that are in private hands, I thought that I knew just about everything that there was to know about the GM Motoramas.

After having an opportunity to review David Temple’s book, “Motorama: GM’s Legendary Show & Concept Cars (Cartech), I realized how much there was yet to learn about the fantastic GM Motoramas and the dream cars/concept cars that made the shows so spectacular! The technical organization of this book, the amazing abundance of photos that were never seen or used recently truly amazed me. The Sherlock Holmes approach research bordering on scientific deductions were very insightful and I found myself reviewing the book of the Motorama cars over and over again.

As a serious car collector for the last 53 years I endeavor to add to the Bortz Auto Collection library all significant books that are written about Dream Cars/Concept Cars. Needless to say that there have been many fine books written on the subject but without a doubt this book written by David Temple is the best book ever written about Motorama cars and may be my all time favorite book written on a particular genre of automobiles.

THIS IS A MUST HAVE – MUST READ BOOK for anybody that wants to be knowledgeable on American concept cars/dream cars and GM cars in particular, but just in case you don’t have time to read all the informative text the pictures on their own will pretty much blow you away!

Hats off to David Temple and I guess everybody’s question will be, “what great book will he do next”?

Lavishly illustrated and carefully researched, David Temple's new "Motorama" book is a "must read" for fans of American industrial history and, in particular, the auto industry in its 1950's hey-day. David Temple has set a new standard for publications about the great General Motors Motoramas and the remarkable dream cars that filled the displays. I was particularly pleased to see a large quantity of photographs that I've never seen before in earlier books or articles, and the narrative about each of the featured cars conveys considerable detail and historical background. I look forward to returning to this book again and again to appreciate the spectacle of the GM Motorama, and am thankful that this great resource is available to me.

Lots of technical detail, disappointingly narrow focus

So far, David Baker's books in Haynes' "workshop manual" series have delivered the goods. His recent works on the Apollo 13 mission, NASA's Mars rovers, and the Russian Soyuz spacecraft have been well-rounded, highly detailed, and fairly readable as technical references. This book follows a similar format, the first section describing the basic principles of rocket science, propellents, and motors, the second providing histories of major launch vehicles from the German V-2 to the present day variants of the Atlas, Delta, and Ariane.

As you might expect from a "workshop manual," this book is a straight-up, no BS technical reference. The main part of the text focuses on the development, inner workings, technological advancements, and variants of 20 well-known launch vehicles, including Vanguard, Ariane, Saturn, and Thor. As such, the text is rather richly detailed and best taken in small doses. There are dozens of detailed technical diagrams in here as well, along with many photographs of rockets being built, assembled for launch, launched, and of course, exploding. No doubt hardcore space buffs will find much to love here.

Unfortunately, "Rocket" is a prime example of "what's here is good, BUT..." For a work billing itself as an "insight into the development and technology" of rockets and satellite launchers, an excessively large chunk of it is focused solely on early American launch vehicles at the expense of other nation's rockets. 89 pages are devoted to the Thor, Atlas, Titan, and Delta families, versus five for Soyuz, nine for Ariane, and only two for Proton. It ends up reading like the first book in a six-volume history that got scrapped by the publisher at the last minute, rather than a fully-fleshed reference book.

If you already own David Baker's classic 1978 tome "The Rocket: The History and Development of Rocket and Missile Technology," you don't need to throw it away quite yet. As dated in parts as it may be, it delivers a much broader perspective and a much more readable narrative than this work. If specific impulses, expansion ratios, and Unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine are part of your vocabulary, you might enjoy it, but it could have been so much more.

A good review of the development of US rockets

This book is an excellent review of the evolution of US rockets. For those who have seen the race to the moon, it will remind so many historical events, for the younger ones, an excellent introduction to the development of US rockets in the 20th century.
All aspects of rocket design and evolution are covered, starting on rocket engine, covering liquid, solid propellants, structure, guidance, etc, written in a easy to read narrative way.
Due tribute is given to the Von Braun’s V2, mother of all rockets, pointing the achievements and the influence the V2 had to later rocket development.
Excellent quality color pictures,some of them not seen often, also they are many drawings, some in color , helping to understand combustion chambers and turbo-pumps, for example.
Credit must be given to the translation of units in metric or imperial, easing the reading for ‘non imperial’ readers.
A disappointment, the biggest part of this book is focused on US rockets, but with only few pages on Proton, Diamant and Ariane 5, unfortunately missing the russian Energya, a special design. Not to mention the absence of China, a definite player of the future.
I liked the chapter on the forgotten Saturn I and IB, which played such an important role in the success of the moon program.

A Great Resource, with One Caveat

As a lifelong space geek and retired aerospace engineer, I really love books like this one.

Dr. David Baker's magnificent volumes "The Rocket: The History and Development of Rocket and Missile Technology" (1978) and "The History of Manned Space Flight" (1982) remain the definitive technical and historical references in the field. This volume, "The Rocket: Owners' Workshop Manual," while nowhere near as comprehensive or, indeed, as weighty (in terms of pounds-mass) as the other two books, is still an excellent, if abbreviated, look at the subject. It's even very readable, for those readers who lap up techno-speak, and the hundreds of high-quality drawings and photographs add immensely to the text.

I offer only one minor caveat--most of the book (about 130 of 188 pages) focuses on American rockets. Today, with the U.S. essentially turning its back on developing manned spacecraft (political lip service to the contrary notwithstanding), American rockets are only minor members of the truly international launch vehicle lineup that includes Soyuz, Proton, Ariane, Long March and others. With the demise of the Space Shuttle, Russia's Soyuz, a derivative of the original 1957 Soviet ICBM, is now the only way astronauts and cosmonauts can travel to the International Space Station. Soyuz' 60-year longevity is remarkable and unprecedented--yet it gets only a meager five pages of coverage. I'd like to see 10 times that amount.

So, if you want details of the technical and operational histories of U.S. rockets, complete with many eye-watering engineering drawings and photos, "The Rocket: Owners' Workshop Manual" is a great choice for you. For similar information about the rockets of other nations, you may have to look elsewhere.

Readers also collect apples, milk, cheese, corn, flowers, eggs, veggies, baked goods, and kids (going on a field trip to the greenmarket). Less a map than an aerial view of different areas, the illustrations lack any compass or map key, so children will need their powers of observation and deduction to notice the only dock and the only boat out to sea, the truck marked with a fish, and the building with the same sign out front (the challenges seem to grow in difficulty with page turns). Arrows mark one-way streets (not correct paths!), and readers must puzzle the shortest way to get from one page turn to the next. Lists of items to find in the bright, busy, detailed India ink and colored acrylic ink illustrations extend the fun. The backmatter includes thumbnails marking both the shortest routes and the hidden items, and a paragraph under each goes into more detail about the featured market item.

A great way to introduce kids to their foods origins and to prepare them for a greenmarket visit of their own. (Interactive informational picture book. 4-8)

Though picture books in the find-the-tiny-objects genre can seem a bit aimless, this one has a clear destination: the farmers market. The large double-page spreads present diverse landscapes crisscrossed with roads and full of details and features. As trucks haul food and flowers through the countryside to the green market in town, children can pick out features such as 2 picnic areas, 2 tractors, 1 school bus, or they can trace the mazelike routes of the trucks. The meticulously drawn illustrations, which are india ink drawings colored with acrylic, offer attractive vistas as well as interesting details. Puzzle fans will particularly enjoy searching for a route through the corn maze. Answer keys are appended. From a parent s or teacher s point of view, this is a good way for kids to gain the visual discrimination skills needed for reading, while they learn about the sources of food at their local farmers markets. For kids, though, the combination of mazes and hidden objects is just plain fun. It s a winning combination.

I wish I had this book when we traveled across the US last summer. It is a perfect book for road trips, raining days, bedtime and any time, really. My boys and I loved racing to see who could find the pictures first. It requires focus and patience, which are good skills to have. I think what is great about this book is that the pictures are so colorful and interesting to look at, so it keeps the kid's attention (and Mom/Dad's too). I really enjoyed this book and rate it 4.5 stars.

I love these books. Every time I pick it up to read it to my daughter, we find something new. It's a great concept for a kids book. They get to learn how mazes work, identify hidden animals and learn about goods and services!!

Not just for the K-1 crowd! Perfect for 8-11 year olds :)

I was hesitant to buy this for my 9 year-old 4th grader, because the bulk of the reviews talk about how great this series is for very young children. I'm a huge proponent of reading to kids, but anyone with an emerging-to-avid reader knows that if you don't keep their interest up with what's on the shelf, video games and tv will win the round. (At least they'll try!)

The lexile range for the Humphrey series is roughly 640-730... which translates to a 3rd-5th grade reading level, regardless of your child's chronological age. Can younger kids enjoy hearing the story? Of course. Can older kids get a kick out of it? For sure. I just want other people to know that this is a series geared toward the secondary set, 8-11 years old, despite a number of reviews that may have you saying "Wait a minute..."

Great Chapter Book for K-3

My Kindergarten boy LOVES this book! I read it to him every night, and he was very sad when we finished, because he wanted it to go on and on!!!! Humphrey is a delightful character. The teachers, school children and others in the book such as the pincipal, custodian and teacher's husband all are characters the young reader can appreciate and enjoy. Humphrey learns about each character's problem when he goes home with him or her over a weekeend or holiday, comes up with "a Plan" for each to help with the problem, and teaches each child valuable lessons. Nothing not to like here!!!! Great book to be read to Kindergarteners. Good read-it-yourself chapter book for good readers, 2nd grade probably. 15 chapters. Not an early chapter book.

A joy to read

This book quickly became one of my favorites. It is on the Florida Sunshine State Reader list and is excellent for silent reading or reading aloud. It teaches kids many lessons about people and the way they behave through the eyes of the class pet hamster, Humphrey. I appreciate that it offers an explanation for why otherwise friendly teachers can sometimes be crabby (stressed out from a situation at home), why regular kids can sometimes act out against their friends (upset about new rules at home following a parent's illness), or why children can be extremely shy (self-conscious about their ability to speak English well). It even offers a contrasting view of the life of a principal in school vs. at home. This book was a joy to read, and I'm glad it received well-deserved recognition by making the SSR list.

How sad to see the new edition of this great book ...

How sad to see the new edition of this great book to come down to this level of bad representation of the concepts that originally gave the book the high status as the standard guide for CPM! If you really need to learn the concepts then buy edition 4 or 5 (4 stars). Just to give you an example. The earlier editions had a chapter on Project Time Management (Chapter 9) which beautifully explained the time management cycle that let the professional before the academicians know the ins and outs of the time management cycle, how to start it, how to progress thorough it, and how to update the time - all in a good logical sequence. In the new edition 6, these concepts are gone, part of the older chapter have been moved to two other chapters - 9 Project Scheduling Applications and 10 Project Coordination; they became out of context; just subsections here and there without proper link between them! Another example, the Time Acceleration chapter 7 are now named as Managing Time at time it does not actually speak about any management of time, just time reduction techniques. The brief addition of a commercial project did not add that much to the book; in fact it is kind of being enforced on the text. The CPM concepts were structured around the small bridge project, but now this commercial one along with the disintegration of the old chapters have all rendered a text book like any other book on the market without any distinguishing features. I would urge Wiley to remove this book from the shelves, to keep and protect the memory of the great work that Sears and Clough did.

Great but found a typo

This is a great book and series for my geography-loving son. However, there is a typo in the hard copy version on the page about the Finnish "Adam and Eve" in the fourth sentence. Minor issue, but in such a short book, these issues should probably not occur.

Great photos and anecdotes

Interesting and well paced. The photos are excellent and well chosen. The writing is appropriate and easily understood. The only negative is the three typos on the page about the Finnish Adam and Eve.

We liked this book. For a kids book about Finland, it hits the mark. For the author, more pictures. Kindle books have to have lots of large pictures;)
