When a storm crashes in, the owlet wings bravely home to his tree where his mother soon joins him. With the simplest of lines, Yuly imbues her owl baby with great character. Reminiscent of Martin Waddell's Owl Babies (Candlewick 1992), the simple text is suited for group sharing or one-on-one with toddlers, who will happily join in with making the sounds. About the Author
Toni Yuly has been an early bird all her life, and loves to start the day in the studio listening to other early birds sing outside her window. She was born in Seattle and now lives in Bremerton, Washington, in a small house by the water. She studied painting at the University of Washington, where she worked with the great American painter Jacob Lawrence. In addition to making art, Toni works in the King County library system. Night Owl is her first book for children.

Excellent!

Night Owl is a lovely little story and a perfect choice for toddler story time. The color palette evokes the night-time world perfectly, and the large, bold line characters exude charm. Night Owl goes in search for his mother, encountering a variety of night noises. From the toot of the train whistle to the croak of a toad, there are plenty of opportunities for the story reader to have fun with sound. The repetitive text will have any story time audience answering you when little owl keeps asking if this is his mother.
Much like this author's Early Bird, this book is a gift for anyone looking for a good toddler read. This is a must have for any story time collection, or for any parent wishing to provide their new story listener with a fun little introduction to sounds and a cute first look at a fascinating creature.

Night Owl, a new favorite

My two two-year-old grandkids both love Night Owl. They like to repeat the sounds the little owl hears while listening for his mommy's hoot...the cricket, the toad, the train. They are always so happy when his mommy flies home and brave little night owl can go to sleep. I think all kids can relate to waiting for mommy to get home or pick them up and they completely understand how happy night owl is when his mommy returns. Another hit by Toni Yuly who also wrote the charming Early Bird.

Art tells the story.

The advice I most remember from a library school instructor and long-time children's librarian is to choose materials for children based partly, if not entirely, on the artwork. Retired now, I still follow this rule when buying for family grandchildren. Toni Yuly's artwork virtually tells her stories, but of course the good writing -- simple and to the point -- doesn't hoit.
