About the Author
Emma Carlson Berne has written and edited more than two dozen books for children and young adults, including biographies of such diverse subjects as Shakespeare, Frida Kahlo, and Snoop Dogg. Berne authored three books in the Sterling Biographies series: Christopher Columbus, Helen Keller, and Sacagawea. She lives in Cincinnati, OH.

Finally, a more truthful, balanced look at the "discovery" of the Americas suitable for young children.

The only elementary-level book on Columbus I've found to date which spends as much time on the Tainos of the Caribbean (the people Columbus "discovered") as it does on Columbus, and also manages to lay out some of the more brutal facts of those encounters without dwelling on them in such a way that it would traumatize young children. Hat tip for also including the actual first "discovery" of the Americas by the Vikings, several hundred years before Columbus. Probably the ONLY book I've found so far on Columbus that I would be comfortable using in a classroom as an overview of Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples Day.
Regarding the "factual errors" specifically mentioned by the only other reviewer so far - Ms. Berne mentions the Great Khan specifically in reference to Columbus's reasons for seeking a water route to the far east. Columbus's knowledge of the far east was based mostly on information brought back by Marco Polo along the Silk Road (which Ms. Berne points out), which wended through both India and China and which, at the time that Marco Polo was traveling, was definitely united and under the control of the Great Khan of the Mongol empire. Was the territory we now call China ever completely under Mongol control? No. Was the portion that Marco Polo visited under Mongol control? Probably. Was Columbus's knowledge false and outdated by a couple hundred years? Yes. Should we be surprised, given the travel and informational limitations of the time? No. Should this deter you from reading this book to children? No. In fact, it's a great starting point for a conversation about European misinformation about the world, and how Columbus could have mistaken the Tainos for Indians.

Factual errors!

When writing a book on historical events, its important to at least get the facts straight. For example, in one place the author says the "Indies" (India) was ruled by the " Great Khan" of China, which is untrue, as India was never in its history ruled by China. Also, Columbus was looking for route to India, not China. I could go on.
