Bismillah Review! The best review in the entire world!

My wife wrote this review: I received this book with much enthusiasm and very high expectations as the writing of Asmaa Hussein has always touched a special chord with me. I am an avid reader of her blog and Facebook posts, and couldn’t wait for something written by her to become a part of our family’s library. Needless to say, my family and I were not disappointed! My 2.5 year old son thoroughly enjoyed the book, despite it's length, and has asked to read it multiple times since we have received it. I suspect older children would enjoy reading the book too as it is expertly written with many twists and turns in the plot to keep them engaged!
I love that the story has many important lessons, though it does not at all come off as "preachy" in tone (as many islamic childrens' books often are). These lessons include but are not limited to:
- importance of keeping a promise,
- love that the child feels towards his mother, and all the work he does to make her happy,
- the concept of barakah,
- importance of bismillah,
- placing one's trust in Allah,
- stopping everything to pray salah,
- sharing with ones community,
- generosity,
- and I especially loved that the child viewed his local imam as his friend and could turn to him for help for a seemingly trivial issue!
Also, I for one love seeing persons of colour as main characters in books, because I find that's most children's books - even islamic ones - are especially restrictive in this department. We found the illustrations in this book to be remarkable, especially the exaggerated facial expressions of the characters.
We do wish, however, that the book was available in hardcover, because as I mentioned we purchased it for our 2.5 year old son. This may not be a problem with those that have older children.
By the way, I did receive this book at a discount price for an unbiased review.

The way a Muslim kids book should be

This is a really beautiful book.
This was so cute because it held the attention of me barely pre-k boy even though it was more in line with my 5 yr old. I would say this is pre-K (if they can sit still) through elementary school. I fell in love with it because
-I learned Somali words
-it is a new twist on and old folktale
-Islamic images throughout the book of Muslims, prayer and the main place in the book takes place in the masjid
-surprise ending for the kids
-SENSE OF COMMUNITY
-FULFILLMENT OF ALLAH'S BLESSINGS
-sharing
A lot of Muslim themed books for kids haven't been a high quality, as far as I'm concerned. But this book is different & I have hope that the industry is starting to change

The story is about a little boy who wants to do something nice for his mother

I received this book at a discount for an unbiased review.
I read it to my 3.5 year old son. It had more words than I expected. My son did not mind at all though.
The story is about a little boy who wants to do something nice for his mother. I love that the story brings to life a way of living that our children might not be familiar with and provokes questions. My son wanted to know if Hasan watched Thomas the train and we had a nice discussion on that.
I love the theme of sharing, contentment, determination and love throughout the book.
Well done Asma Hussein! Look forward to reading more from this wonderful author.
