Quick and Enjoyable Read

This book has a lot of elements you can find in several other series for young adult but the fine mix of Fantasy, Comedy and action make it a funny and refreshing reading.
It is a very fast paced story filled with magic and adventure, humor and a little danger to keep you on your toes.
The writing is clear and easy for a young person to follow, the characters are plenty and easy to like (I loved Quirky Burkley or grandma) , or easy to dislike in some cases (I really detested Cruel Jewel).
I think the story is full of good messages like the importance of friends to face the adventure, but it is outlined also the need of relying on your own resources if you really want to help your family.
Like in Fairylicious I loved very much the role of grandma.
She is reassuring and heartwarming and I think it's a good message for youngers that you can trust elderly because they are wise and reliable.
The small illustrations at the beginning of the chapters are really nice.

Burkley & the Beasts: The Sea Serpent

Burkley never met her Grandpa Brooks or Uncle Charlie, but she has always been curious about how they went missing. One day, after telling her Grandma about seeing things no one else can see, she finds out the real story behind the disappearances - and her family. Soon she is off on an adventure with her best friend and her cousin to try to save them.

This was such a cute story and a fun adventure. I really liked the portrayal of the characters and how they interacted. The artwork on the cover and at the beginning of each chapter really added to the book as well. I can't wait to read about the rest of the adventures Burkley must go on in order to get her Grandpa and Uncle back home where they belong.

"I really (x7) liked this book! I loved how Burkley fought the giant Sea Serpent and then I was surprised by the (**SPOILER ALERT**) baby serpents that popped up. Burkley is a cool girl and everybody calls her "Quirky Burkley" because she does lots of funny things. I liked how she worked with her best friends to solve the adventure but she also had to do it on her own sometimes too. Her quest was awesome but I liked the neat parts where she was in school too."

The knowonder books are well-written, nicely illustrated and designed beautifully. Our little girl was so excited to receive a stack of them on Christmas. She read through all of them as fast as she could but will surely enjoy them again and again.

Beware: Droon Invades the Upper World!

Whew! Not only has the latest installment in the Secrets of Droon series arrived, but it's a winner. My son is delighted (and when he's happy, I'm happy). As we feared at the conclusion of the Land of the Lost, Eric's dad's disappearance was merely the tip of the iceberg. Alas, for the first time, an inhabitant of Droon has invaded the upper world! (If this makes no sense, it's best that you begin with The Hidden Stairs and the Magic Carpet. You'll need to meet Eric, whose basement leads to Droon, and his stalwart friends Julie and Neal. This intrepid trio teams with Princess Keeah, a junior wizard tutored by the master, Gaelen Longbeard, to foil the dastardly desires of the evil Lord Sparr. Sure, you can figure out how Max, the spider troll, and the warrior Ninns fit in without starting at the beginning, but why spoil the fun? ) For loyal followers of this parallel universe saga, book number eight offers a huge payoff. This is the longest Droon tale yet - where the prior episodes are in the 80- and 90-page range, here Tony Abbott breaks through the 100-page barrier. (My son, transfixed by the tale's momentum, never noticed that my voice started to fade as I read for more than an hour straight.) Moreover, the author brings together many rarely seen (but sorely missed) characters from earlier stories. Ensnared in Lord Sparr's evil scheme are King Zello (Princess Keeah's father), Batamogi (the furry Oobja monarch), and my son's favorite, the pillow-shaped Kahn (liege of the purple lumpies). Even the elusive, shape-shifting Queen Relna, last seen battling the Sleeping Giant of Goll, returns in spirit. The action moves at a steady clip and the author skillfully makes this book feel as fresh as the first in the series. Now my son must wait for the next book about Droon. It's a shame time moves so slowly here in the upper world....

My name is Jake Grass I have read all of the Secrets Of Droon books. The Secrets Of Droon is just like The Magic Tree House but I think The Secrets Of Droon is lots better than the Magic tree house.

As the parent of a 8 year old boy I am very happy with the Secrets of Droon series. They fullfill my sons need for adventure, excitement and suspense. These stories have a "Harry Potter-esque" tone to them but are more age appropriate for my 8 year old to read. (Kind of Harry Potter meets the Magic Treehouse.) Our only problem is, #9 isn't out yet.

Good but incomplete

For me what was written was good but incomplete.
I was looking for diagrams from water source to to end plants being watered.
The diagrams focused on the front end starting at water source
but never got to the water users the plants. Much of the diagrams focused on
In line ferterlizer equipment which I personally have no interest in.
And skipped the options for actually releasing water at the end.

Political intrigue is the heart of the book.Loose ends are tied up with bitter sweetness

This can be a stand alone book,as there
is alot of interspersed mentions of what happened in the previous 2 books but I wouldn't recommend it.
I read this before knowing it was the 3rd in a trilogy & having read the conclusion I wasn't motivated to go read the previous books.
It seemed a bit of a spoiler to me that in the very beginning (of this book) they tip you off as to how the major character's relationship will end.
There's alot of intrigue & personal drama as the princess of Cortova is a conniving, resourceful,formidable character forged from her early relationships.
As for the interpersonal relationships: men live in the shadow of strong women & their affection for those women seems a bit of a handicap.Political intrigue & a heavy dose of the adage:"the course of true love never did run smooth" is the heart & soul of this story.

Having had not previous connection with the main characters, I was not predisposed to want to see them get together as a couple.
The resolution seemed forced as a beloved character is killed off to make it easy for one guy & girl to get together.
It seemed like the author felt obligated to unite the 2 main characters.
For me, the tying up of loose ends was more awkward & inevitable than sweet & actually left me a bit depressed.

All encompassing guide without a bunch of unnecessary fluff

I work in a global company of around 40,000 employees. We have a lot of people with the title and certification of "project manager" but we have very, very few who can drive projects to completion. I think one root cause of this is because traditional PM methodologies are all about documentation and tracking:
+ Charter
+ Scope
+ Schedules
+ Cost
+ Resource hour tracking
etc. . .

With all such documentation requirements (I'm not saying they don't have their place), too many PM's get caught up in "documentation-itis" and when something starts to have challenges a common response is, "Well I sent them an email," or "It was on the task list with a due date."

This book isn't exactly about "how to get it done", but the simple fact that there is chart after chart of comparison of PM 1.0 versus PM 2.0, really shows that as the business needs have changed, also methodologies and focus are finally changing.

What I further liked about this book:
+ I already mentioned comparison charts
+ Lots of good color diagrams
+ Bulleted lists, where each item could be it's own chapter, but that isn't the scope here. He gives us the list of what we need to know.
+ How the PM fits into the organization
+ How the PM can help strategic planning
+ He doesn't just cover risk as a general topic, but gets into specific of political risks too
+ Something I haven't seen in many other PM books, which is how to address being a PM on an R&D Project

The author simply asking lots of questions on a section helps move the tactically-minded person to thinking more strategically. This coupled with lots of "how project management brings value", get one's head out of the weeds of task tracking and into the mindset of driving a project from a higher level. I wish more leaders and customers who don't get the need for a PM/PMO, would read several of these sections.

My current team is a group of business and reporting analysts. We don't necessarily "do projects", but we've incorporated some Agile methodologies into our processes in order to keep our tasks organized and our communications flowing. What I like about PM 2.0, it I could take some of the "new way of doing things" and apply them to my team, so I can help develop and coach my team to learn to drive and lead decisions and meeting in order to get the job done.

OVERALL: Overall it's still has a lot methodology focus. But it's balanced more than PM 1.0 by introducing our focus more on our stakeholders and changing environment. PMBOK is not about how to do project management but mostly terminology and concepts. This gets closer to helping a PM know how to get the project complete. I'm finding it a very good read and reference book. If anything, it's 100x easier to read than the PMBOK!

Excellent for the Right User

This is arguably the most comprehensive and thorough guide to project management available. Essentially a textbook for MBA students as well as consultants and corporate project managers, this book tackles the challenges of project management in a world that is becoming more technologically complex, virtual, interrelated yet decentralized, and constantly changing. The author begins by presenting "PM1.0" or the more traditional systems of project management. Using charts, he clearly demonstrates why the old methods no longer work and explains how the PM 2.0 system will correct flaws in the earlier system. The book then breaks down the PM 2.0 system into great detail.

The book is very well-organized (again, much like a textbook) with a clear design, clever and creative graphics, and valuable tables which provide quick visual guides for the text-based content. Most of the book uses an attractive black/gold/blue color scheme as visual dividers for the material, and occasionally full-color charts are used to highlight key concepts. One of my favorite examples is in the Project Management Methodologies section (Chapter 6), where the author presents the challenges of design freezes-- that point in a project where no further changes can be made without incurring greater costs. In a multicolor graphic he demonstrates to the reader how a $1 change at the definition stage of the project could cost $10,000 at the customer delivery phase. This relatively simple formula would be a great way for a project leader to illustrate to their team why changes need to be considered early in the process and only introduced conservatively toward the end.

And that brings me to my review heading about the "right user." This is not a text for the average person who is not directly responsible for project management at a high level. It is clearly written for a consultant, a leader of a Research & Development team, a head of marketing, or others in similar positions-- or for students studying to become leaders in those areas. If I were a high-level project manager (I manage projects but not nearly on the level as described in this book) I would use this as a means to educate my team about the key components of successful project management, and to understand what we are doing and why we are doing it. For that reason, I particularly liked Chapter 8 which focuses on the role of the project manager in transformational leadership, and provides excellent suggestions for getting buy-in from your team as well as other participants in the change process.

This is not a book you’re likely to pick up and read cover-to-cover. But it’s one you’ll reference again and again if your career takes you into the business world. This is not just for project managers. This book provides valuable information for all roles on a project. Many people will buy it as a textbook for an upperclass or graduate-level college course in project management. If you’re one such buyer, this is a book you’ll want to hang on to for a long time. It’s much more than a textbook - it’s a reference book on how to complete projects successfully. It will also help you determine how to define the parameters of success early in the project.
The book begins by laying out how effective project management has evolved in recent years. The “old” 1.0 version focused on tracking time, cost, and scope. But that’s no longer sufficient to measure success. It used to be that if the project was trending to be on time and within budget, it was in good shape. Now, many more factors need to be considered. Many of these factors are external to the project and possibly completely out of the control of the project team. But they still can significantly impact the value of the deliverables of the project to the sponsor(s). These factors are described in detail in the book.
There is no single best way to manage projects. What this book provides is an extensive toolbox of valuable practices that can be put to use as part of a comprehensive methodology. Large enterprises will have their own Project Management organization and a well defined process that should encompass most of the concepts laid out in this book. Other companies will be able to bring in external PM resources with the required expertise. Just saunter up to the buffet and select the elements that are appropriate and valuable to the execution of the project you are about to begin. If you try to incorporate the full gamut of tools and practices in a simple project, you’ll end up with an inefficient bureaucracy. Use too few and your project is at risk of spinning out of control. The important thing is to have a documented, repeatable process in place to effectively manage your projects. This book provides the blueprint to design, build, implement, and execute that process.
Bottom line: Project Management is about managing expectations and keeping ahead of the questions and concerns that sponsors and stakeholders will have about the execution, completion and ultimate value derived from a project. This book provides all the tools you’ll need to do just that. Keep it handy because you’ll come back to it over and over again.

About the Author
Constance Hammond is an INSERM director of research at the Mediterranean Institute of Neurobiology. A renowned Parkinson's disease investigator, in 2012 she became a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in recognition for her services to scientific communication. Studying biology at the University of Pierre and Marie Curie and the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris she completed her thesis in neurosciences at the Marey Institute in Paris, directed by Prof. D. Albe-Fessard. Guided by her curiosity and her constant desire to learn, she changed lab and research domains several times. With the knowledge of other systems and the mastering of other techniques she finally came back to her first and preferred subject of research; the role of the subthalamic nucleus in the basal ganglia system in health and Parkinson's disease.

After many years of lecturing neurobiology to biology and psychology students it became apparent that students were in need of a book to help understand the basic principles of cell electrophysiology. Discussions with Philippe Ascher convinced her that the best way to approach the subject was to explain ionic currents and potential changes in terms of single channels and unitary currents, describing pioneering neurobiological experiments. This first book "Neurobiologie Cellulaire" (written in French with her colleague Danièle Tritsch) appeared in 1990. Its immediate success inspired her to completely revise the book content and publish it in English giving it to a larger audience; Appearing in 1996 the fist edition of "Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience" was born.

This is a fun tale of Lion's Shabbat that young children can sing along with ...

[[VIDEOID:30428462595fdd6989c340d706f28dc7]] Lion smiles as he sings out his greeting, "Shabbat Shalom." All of a sudden Toucan replies from way up high, "Hey!" Lion is startled and doesn't know where that voice is coming from. The Lion spots Toucan up in the corner and greets him again, "Shabbat Shalom." There are voices everywhere, but just who is shouting at him again? Look over there ... it's none other than Monkey and Snake!

They were there a minute ago, but where have they gone? Lion lifts up the carpet. Nope, they are missing. He begins to roam around shouting out his greeting of peace, "Shabbat Shalom." He goes this way and that, that way and this, but where can they be? All of a sudden, Toucan, Monkey, and Snake shout "Hey!" at Lion, who is very, very startled. There they are and it's time to set the Shabbat table.

This is a fun tale of Lion's Shabbat that young children can sing along with. Lion enjoys singing out his greeting of peace for Shabbat, but everyone is hiding. Once they are found they quickly begin to set the Shabbat table with two loaves of challah, candles, and wine. Children can learn about Shabbat, the special greeting, and what goes on the table through this simple, almost wordless book. There's a link provided on the back cover so children can "read" and sing along with Lion and his friends.

A Great Way For Children to Learn the "Shabbat Shalom, Hey!" Song and its Meaning!

In "Shabbat Shalom, Hey!", children will learn three words..."Shabbat", "Shalom", and "Hey!". There are illustrations in the book of animals saying and then expressing those words. It is based on a well-known children's song. I believe this story will help children concentrate on the Sabbath, while hopefully the person reading it (and/or singing) it to them (parent, teacher, etc.) will be able to explain to them what the Sabbath is if they don't already know. One of the illustrations in the book gives a clear meaning about what the Sabbath is, while all the other illustrations lead up to it.

I think this book will be great for children to look at while they are singing the "Shabbat Shalom, Hey!" song. It will probably make some children giggle as they are singing the song to see the animals in the pictures saying the very same words. Something I noticed that is different with this book versus other children's books is that the pages are turned the opposite way than they usually are, to make a longer picture.

This story is great way to help children learn the "Shabbat Shalom, Hey!" and also make the meaning of the song come alive for them!

I think with kids books (especially young kids) illustrations are important to capturing their attention and this doesn't disappoint. Cute animals singing Shabbat Shalom.
