He tries his best to lose the "itchy," "too long," and "far too orange" present, but his mother always finds it. When he returns home from a school trip without the hated accessory, his mother tells him she'll knit another one, "and this time we will do it together!" Feeney's minimalist line drawings humorously and subtly convey Little Owl's emotions. The orange scarf trails across the pages, gets stuck inside a suitcase addressed to Peru, and finally ends up warming the neck of a giraffe at the zoo. There’s no accounting for taste. Little Owl’s mother has knitted him a long, warm, orange scarf. And he hates it. It’s not that Little Owl is negative—he loves adding numbers, eating ice cream, riding his scooter, and, usually, surprises—except this one. To Little Owl, the scarf is itchy, too long, and way too orange. He does everything he can to lose the scarf, but the wise mom owl always finds it. Until Little Owl’s class goes to the zoo, and he makes one giraffe very, very happy. Feeney’s line-and-wash illustrations ramp up the charm throughout, depicting our owls in spare blue with a dab of orange on their tiny beaks. The offending scarf, by contrast, is large and assertively orange. A satisfying lesson in listening and cooperation is given when the mother offers to knit another scarf but this time with Little Owl’s help, from visiting the yarn store onward. And guess what? Originally from North Carolina, Tatyana Feeney studied illustration at the North East Wales College of Art and Design and now lives in Ireland. She is the author of Small Bunny’s Blue Blanket, Little Frog’s Tadpole Trouble, and Small Elephant’s Bathtime.

Gorgeous, gorgeous book

Feeney's picture book is the story of a little owl who dislikes the scarf his mom makes him and purposely tries to lose it. I ended up loving this book, as do my children. The illustrations are sparse but beautiful and the colors are all either blue or orange (one of my favorite color combos) and they are just so creative and sweet.
One of my favorite pages of a picture book ever is one in which little owl and his mom go yarn shopping and little owl decides it is much more exciting to do than expected. I laughed so hard when I saw that page and Instagrammed it for my knitting friends, who all immediately decided to purchase this book!
Overall, this is one of my favorite picture books that I've ever bought. My children are fond of it, but I definitely enjoy it more. It helps that it is short, so if I need a quick book for a night time read, it's a great soothing one to pick.

Charming illustrations, owls and knitting, what else do you need?

I read this charming title in storytime today and was delighted with the darling illustrations and the simple text. The children responded well to this one and one little boy was excited to discover (via clues in the illustrations) what had become of little owl's scarf. I love that knitting is referenced and that little owl and his mother go to a yarn store - adorable.
