About the Author
Tim Gilles has authored or co-authored several textbooks and has been active in professional associations for many years. He was president and a board member of the California Automotive Teachers (CAT), a board member and election committee chair of the North American Council of Automotive Teachers (NACAT), a member of the California Community College Chancellor's Trade and Industry Advisory Committee, and education committee chair for the Santa Barbara Chapter of the Independent Automotive Professionals Association. Mr. Gilles has also served several terms as a board member of the Santa Barbara Automotive Service Council and is active in industry associations such as AERA, The Automotive Repair Coalition, and IATN, including delivering presentations at numerous conferences. He was an automotive teacher for 38 years and is professor emeritus in the Automotive Technology Department at Santa Barbara City College. Mr. Gilles holds the industry certifications of ASE Master Automotive Technician and ASE Master Engine Machinst.

This is an amazing book! I used the previous editions while I was going to school. Even though I purchased the book in a new condition, it arrived at my door step with some minor damage to the front cover. But I still recommend this book!

This is a fascinating look at how salt is made that the young reader will enjoy ...

Mmmmm! If you love salt on your fries, you just might be curious about where it comes from. Of course most of the salt we use “on Earth comes from the sea” where it’s harvested. If you take a close look at the very unusual photograph in this book you will see small ponds. When the sun shines on these ponds “some of the water evaporates.” Once the water is saturated, which means it “can hold no more salt,” it’s taken to other ponds. If you think this doesn’t take very long, you’d be mistaken. In fact “the evaporation process often takes years,” something that will probably surprise you.

After the evaporation process is complete and there are salt crystals, the harvesting begins. You can see a man using a shovel to scoop up some of those crystals to get ready to head to a factory. Off to the factory it goes on the bed of a truck. Once it arrives, it’s time to “wash the salt to clean it.” Then it’s dried and sorted. You’ll be able to watch this entire process by looking at the pictures in this book. The salt is then sorted by screens into “large, medium, and small crystals.” Its then packaged and sent to stores where people can purchase it. What other kinds of foods do you put salt on?

This is a fascinating look at how salt is made that the young reader will enjoy. This is a very basic, but high interest, beginning nonfiction book that newly independent readers will enjoy. More difficult words such as “dissolve” are highlighted in the text and defined in the glossary. There are full-color, full-page photographs illustrating the concept discussed on the adjoining page. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary and additional recommended book and website resources to explore. This is an excellent read and discuss book for circle or story time in the homeschool or classroom setting.

THE FIRST ACCESSIBLE TEXTBOOK ON THE KINETICS OF MATERIALS

Until now, a straightforward introduction to the fundamental concepts and principles underlying kinetic processes in materials systems has been missing from available literature. This textbook explores the essential kinetics concepts and applications necessary for more advanced studies in engineering and materials science.

Part I is devoted to a basic treatment of critical kinetic concepts such as diffusion and reaction rate theory, essential thermodynamics, and chemical reaction kinetics. Illustrated diagrams, examples, textboxes, and homework questions impart a unified, intuitive understanding of these essentials, creating the groundwork for application.

Part II builds upon this foundation, showing how to apply the basic tool developed in Part I to qualitatively and quantitatively model common kinetic processes relevant to materials science and engineering. Topics explored include gas-solid kinetic processes, liquid-solid and solid-solid phase transformations, and microstructural evolution.

Throughout the book, real-world examples illustrate the application of kinetic principles to important materials systems. About the Author

RYAN O'HAYRE, Ph.D., is Professor of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines, where he directs the Advanced Energy Materials Laboratory, a developer of new materials and devices to enable alternative energy technologies including fuel cells and solar cells. He received his Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Stanford University.

Best Textbook I have ever used!!

Dr. O'Hayre's textbook is the best textbook I have used in my coursework thus far. Reading the textbook before tests helped me learn more than any other textbook i have read. Wording was concise and clear on all accounts. Pictures were well drawn and added to my understanding greatly. the worked problems are absolutely clear and the presentation of new and difficult subjects is clean and well thought out.

I would highly recommend this textbook to any students studying materials science/engineering or any students enrolled in a materials kinetics course. the explanations afforded by this textbook were incredibly valuable to my learning.

This textbook blurs the line of reading for academic purposes and reading for pleasure, the short 250 page book includes all that is needed for undergraduate kinetics courses and is incredibly easy to read and use.

Good book for undergraduates

I was the instructor for a Kinetics of Materials course, and used this book as my required text. I found it to be a great book for use at the undergraduate level, with clear, adequate explanations. As a faculty member interested in pedagogy, it was refreshing to see the learning objectives clearly stated at the beginning of the book and the review questions included in the problem section. When it came time for my students to study for their exam, I was able to point them to these sections to highlight the key points. The problems at the end of each chapter include conceptual questions as well as mathematical, problem-based questions. Furthermore, there were very few typos or errors, even though it was the first print edition. I plan to use it again next year.

Great and easy-to-follow textbook!

Absolutely great textbook that I used for my materials kinetics class. Very easy and clear reading posed in an organized manner, it did a fantastic job to complement the material that was taught in class. I really like the quick review of thermodynamics and all of the applications of materials kinetics found throughout the textbook as well. I very rarely read textbooks, but I actually enjoyed reading this one from cover to cover. I will be keeping this book as a reference in the future!

Feeling great after reviewing with this

This study guide had it all. I really only need the general class information, but I’ll keep it for the amateur extra class for later. This book doesn’t necessarily teach you everything about a Ham Radio, but it taught me what I needed to pass the exam. I know there are more comprehensive guides but I was able to study this in a couple of weeks and felt really comfortable taking the exam.

I was very disappointed and lost time waiting to receive this book to ...

The General License test is expired June 31st 2015 in this book and is of no value. I believe this book should be removed as it is selling as a complete and up to date book and it is not at least concerning the General tests! I was very disappointed and lost time waiting to receive this book to find this out. It took many days of phone calls to find out from the Publisher that the General portion was in fact expired. No one has yet taken any actions to correct this error and still being sold with no notification to buyers that the General portion of this book is indeed no longer valid for the existing testing sights for the General License.

Strictly a study guide, and an excellent one.

This book is exactly what it says it is, no more and no less. If you want to study to pass the test this book is excellent. It doesn't teach you much background or context, it just works you on the specific facts you need to pass the test.
If you want to further your basic knowledge of radio physics and operations this is not the book for you. If you want to take and pass the Amateur Radio license test, this is an excellent choice.

Jennifer Ann Mann is the author of Sunny Sweet Is So Not Sorry and Sunny Sweet Is So Dead Meat. She grew up in New Jersey, the second of four sisters. Her short stories have been published by Highlights for Children, where she won the Highlights for Children 2008 Fiction Contest. She lives in Boston in a giant house filled with kids and cats.

Humorous and Fun

The hilarious disaster continues! This is the second Sunny Sweet book, and it is a ton of fun to read. I read the first book to my kids and they loved it. They laughed over Sunny's antics and everything poor Masha had to endure at her sister's hands. I requested an ARC from the publisher for Sunny Sweet is SO Dead Meat, and there were squeals and screams of delight from my daughters when it arrived. We read it together and my kids loved it as much as the first one.

Sunny is a six year old genius that makes her older sister, Masha, the subject of most experiments. In this book, Sunny sprays Masha with red dye in order to conduct a social behavior experiment for a science fair.

Poor Masha has to put up with her younger sister and try to keep them both out of trouble. Their adventure is hilarious and heartwarming. Even though Masha usually wants to wring Sunny's neck, she is still a responsible and caring older sister. The girls get into one scrape after another while learning about themselves and each other along the way.

I would definitely recommend this series to middle grade kids that like realistic (contemporary) fiction and humor.
