The Wind, the Road and the Way (The Epic Order of the Seven Book 3), by Jenny Cote

Eleven terrified disciples cower in the Upper Room, wondering what it to become of them. Jesus is dead, crucified on a cruel Roman cross. Its only a matter of time before the Jewish leaders come after them to crush what their self proclaimed "Messiah" started with 'The Way' movement. Little do these men know that soon they will boldly turn the world upside down as they fulfill Jesus' Great Commission. A self-righteous, model Pharisee named Saul sets out on a zealous quest to arrest and murder as many followers of 'The Way' as he can, beginning with Stephen. Little does this Christian killer know he'll soon be stopped in his tracks on the road to Damascus to become the greatest Christian that ever lived. Through his pen he'll prove that no one is beyond hope if any man be in Christ, he is new creation.

After a brief, joyous reunion with Jesus and the exhilarating arrival of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the Order of the Seven animals split up for multiple missions as Christianity explodes onto the world's stage. Max, Liz and Nigel set off with Paul as he faces beatings, rejection and imprisonment to bring the Good News to the world. Al accompanies his favorite fisherman- turned-Apostle Peter to find the first Gentile convert while creating a perfect, secret symbol for the Way. Kate is blessed to protect Mary and John in Jerusalem where the Church gets its start. The team must face a dark, pagan world riddled with false gods, arrange crucial introductions, assist with jail-breaks and plan risky escapes while overseeing the writing of the New Testament that will inspire and guide believers for centuries to come. But they still find time for fun and games with a monkey names Nate as the Animalympics are born during the human Isthmian Games.

This heart-gripping, action-packed adventure begins a two-book saga that brings to life the events of Acts and the birth of Christianity while showing how each book of the New Testament came to be. The Wind, the Road and the Way covers Resurrection morning through Paul's second missionary journey.

An amazing read. The characters fell right into place, bringing the Easter story together before my eyes in each scene. Ms. Cote gives readers a vivid example of how life may have been like for those living during those early days. I loved the biblical history and getting to know the lifestyles and historical details of Acts. Ms. Cote weaves the Gospel of Jesus throughout the lives of the people. If you enjoy biblical fiction, I highly recommend The Wind, the Road and the Way. Thank you, Ms. Cote, for an amazing account of God's love for us.

Dissapointed
By SCOTT CAMPBELL
As a reader of the entire series of Jenny Cote's books, I have eagerly read each book in her Amazing Tales of Max & Liz series. Both books made me cry, laugh out loud, and experience the animals' journeys as if I was really there with them. The eagerness I felt when Mrs. Cote came out with her new series, Epic Order of the Seven, was met by disappointment. By the time I finished this book, I was getting somewhat annoyed with how each story in her new series was. Let me tell you why:

First, too boring. Most reviews will tell you opposite, but the reason I thought these books were somewhat boring was because of the story plot. While the first two books she came out with were filled with humor, tragedy, and unexpected twists, the three books in her new series are predictable, without any kind of strong adversary, and lack any of the sweaty nervousness that is felt with The Ark and The Dreamer.

Also, it seems like all the animals do is just watch the events unfold before them, instead of trying to do any harrowing jobs or dangerous assignments. I always get annoyed when the new character Claire keeps changing into different people and spoiling the excitement by blatantly telling what's going to happen to this person, or with that situation. Although I admire Jenny Cote's attempt to follow the events of Paul and Peter, Mrs. Cote follows the people so much that the book can drag out and get boring. I thought this was about the Epic Order of the Seven trying to fulfill the events, not trying to watch as the events unfold!

Finally, about the adversary. Basically, there is little scenes if any of the bad guys. Whenever they try to stop the animals' plans, they always, always fail. I wish she could develop a smart enemy who could at least thwart or delay their plans, but oh no; we have to have the good guys always win. You can't have a book that keeps your attention if your characters are not getting into any dangerous, heart-pounding messes. However, I do understand that this book is targeted for younger readers (hence the reason I give this book three stars instead of two).

Despite the fact I don't really care for this book and the last two, I really am amazed at how God is using Mrs. Cote to touch the hearts of children all over America with her books. That's why I encourage her to keep going with these books and don't stop. But for us teenagers who still read them; a little more action, please! :) I can only hope that Mrs. Cote's next book will be more like her first one, The Ark, the Reed, and the Fire Cloud. And that is why I will readily purchase every new book she puts out. I just hope the next book will not disappoint me like the last three; but if you are looking for a good read-aloud book, or if you are looking for a good book for your child that honors God, this one is great for both!

Wow! The Wind the Road, and the Way was another incredible look on Biblical history through the unique eyes of Max, Liz, and the Epic Order of Seven. It was so amazing to read about stories from your Bible from such a perspective that makes the same stories so much more alive and real. Throughout the book my heart caught many times at God's awesome power, but I nearly cried when Paul mentioned all of Jesus' titles, it was just so real and personal. Once again, another book that takes God's truth, and make them so much more personal, so much more real.

This heart-gripping, action-packed adventure begins a two-book saga that brings to life the events of Acts and the birth of Christianity while showing how each book of the New Testament came to be. The Wind, the Road, and the Way covers Resurrection morning through Paul’s second missionary journey. The Fire, the Revelation and the Fall (2015) completes the events in Acts, Peter and Paul in Rome, Roman Christian persecution in the arena and John’s Revelation on Patmos. Watch the miraculous rise of the Church through the fiery trials sent by an Enemy who will stop at nothing to kill anyone who dares to be called Christian.

Jenny does such an excellent job bringing biblical times to life. Her research is thourough and her creativeness is exciting to read. She is such an amazing person, always enerjetic and taking time to know her readers. Each time I read her books I learn so much new stuff, its like taking a Bible study and history class at the same time. As a teen I LOVE the Epic Order of the Seven series, and definitely recommend this book; the sequel is a must read as well.

I would rate this book 10 out of 10 stars.

Dynamic Systems Biology Modeling and Simulation, by Joseph DiStefano III

Dynamic Systems Biology Modeling and Simuation consolidates and unifies classical and contemporary multiscale methodologies for mathematical modeling and computer simulation of dynamic biological systems – from molecular/cellular, organ-system, on up to population levels.  The book pedagogy is developed as a well-annotated, systematic tutorial – with clearly spelled-out and unified nomenclature – derived from the author’s own modeling efforts, publications and teaching over half a century.  Ambiguities in some concepts and tools are clarified and others are rendered more accessible and practical.  The latter include novel qualitative theory and methodologies for recognizing dynamical signatures in data using structural (multicompartmental and network) models and graph theory; and analyzing structural and measurement (data) models for quantification feasibility.  The level is basic-to-intermediate, with much emphasis on biomodeling from real biodata, for use in real applications.

  • Introductory coverage of core mathematical concepts such as linear and nonlinear differential and difference equations, Laplace transforms, linear algebra, probability, statistics and stochastics topics; PLUS …….
  • The pertinent biology, biochemistry, biophysics or pharmacology for modeling are provided, to support understanding the amalgam of “math modeling” with life sciences.
  • Strong emphasis on quantifying as well as building and analyzing biomodels: includes methodology and computational tools for parameter identifiability and sensitivity analysis; parameter estimation from real data; model distinguishability and simplification; and practical bioexperiment design and optimization.
  • Companion website provides solutions and program code for examples and exercises using Matlab, Simulink, VisSim, SimBiology, SAAMII, AMIGO, Copasi and SBML-coded models.
  • A full set of PowerPoint slides are available from the author for teaching from his textbook.  He uses them to teach a 10 week quarter upper division course at UCLA, which meets twice a week, so there are 20 lectures. They can easily be augmented or stretched for a 15 week semester course.

Importantly, the slides are editable, so they can be readily adapted to a lecturer’s personal style and course content needs.  The lectures are based on excerpts from 12 of the first 13 chapters of DSBMS. They are designed to highlight the key course material, as a study guide and structure for students following the full text content.

The complete PowerPoint slide package (~25 MB) can be obtained by instructors (or prospective instructors) by emailing the author directly, at: joed@cs.ucla.edu

Review

"This very satisfying book has multiple strengths. The text has marvelous clarity, as do the mathematical demonstrations. All are synoptic, while simultaneously explaining the underlying, fine details. The useful organization is enhanced by superb graphics. Although the author has many technical capabilities, with both range and depth, below I’ll give just one illustrative example of the excellent result. Major themes of modern computation and modeling, as applied to biology, include issues of nonlinearities, chaotic dynamics, emergent properties, and instabilities. For example, consider the problems attendant on complex dynamic systems with multiple scales of time and space so typical of living systems.  The scientific literature in this domain is rich and immense. When I looked into DiStefano’s book for entries dealing with these topics, I found as early as Chapter One a heading: ”Multiscale Modeling”. Elsewhere were other treatments of these aspects of complexity and modeling difficulties such as the famous problem of “stiff ODEs”, here brilliantly examined and explained, with remedies. The many authoritative tutorials by DiStefano amazed me for so effectively distilling the technical essences. They confirm that DiStefano is a great teacher and guide through various profound, classical difficulties. This book is a masterwork."--F. Eugene Yates "This book provides a systematic review of the concepts of mathematical modeling in various fields. With its simple language, varied practical examples, quick references, appendixes, and clear basic concepts, it provides a thorough explanation of the subject. The well-organized chapters, along with the use of different notations and typescripts, make it a user-friendly book." Rating: 5 Stars--Doody.com, March 7, 2014 "DiStefano presents this interdisciplinary text merging mathematics, modeling, systems science, and biology. The first chapter introduces the philosophy and nomenclature of modeling and simulation. Chapter two covers mathematics including algebraic models, differential equations, linear and nonlinear modeling, and chapter three describes the use of Taylor series and algorithmic treatment of differential equations in computer simulation methods."--ProtoView.com, February 2014 “I am just in awe of your ability to start with simple ideas and use them to explain sophisticated concepts and methodologies in modeling biochemical and cellular systems (Chapters 6 and 7).  This is a great new contribution to the textbook offerings in systems biology.”--Alex Hoffmann, Director of the San Diego Center for Systems Biology and the UCSD Graduate Program in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology “I found Chapter 1 to be a marvel of heavy-lifting, done so smoothly there was no detectable sweat.  Heavy-lifting because you laid out the big load of essential vocabulary and concepts a reader has to have to enter the world of biomodeling confidently.  In that chapter you generously acknowledge some us who tried to accomplish this earlier but, compared to your Chapter 1, we were clumsy and boring.  For me, now, Chapter 1 was a "page-turner" to be enjoyed straight through.  You have the gift of a master athlete who does impossible performances and makes them seem easy. “Your Chapter 9 – on oscillations and stability – is a true jewel.  I have a shelf full of books etc on nonlinear mechanics and system analyses and modeling, but nothing to match the clarity and deep understanding you offer the reader. You are a great explainer and teacher.”--F. Eugene Yates, Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Chemical Engineering and Ralph and Marjorie Crump Professor of Biomedical Engineering, UCLA “Chapter 4 covers many aspects of the notion of compartmentalization in the structural modeling of biomedical and biological models – both linear and nonlinear.  Developments are biophysically motivated throughout; and compartments are taken to represent entities with the same dynamic characteristics (dynamic signatures). A very positive feature of this text is the numerous worked examples in the text, which greatly help readers follow the material.  At the end of the chapter, there are further well thought out analytical and simulation exercises that will help readers check that they have understood what has been presented.  “Chapter 5 looks at many important aspects of multicompartmental modeling, examining in more detail how output data limit what can be learnt about model structure, even when such data are perfect. Among the many features explained are how to establish the size and complexity of a model; how to select between several candidate models; and whether it is possible to simplify a model. All of this is done with respect to the dynamic signatures in the model. As in Chapter 4, readers are helped to understand the often challenging material by means of numerous worked examples in the text, and there are further examples given at the end.”--Professor Keith Godfrey, University of Warwick, Coventry, U.K.

About the Author
“Professor Joe” - as he is called by his students - is a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and
Medicine and Chair of the Computational & Systems Biology Interdepartmental Program at UCLA - an
undergraduate research-oriented program he nurtured and honed over several decades. As an active full-time
member of the UCLA faculty for nearly half a century, he also developed and led innovative graduate PhD
programs, including Computational Systems Biology in Computer Science, and Biosystem Science and
Engineering in Biomedical Engineering. He has mentored students from these programs since 1968, as Director
of the UCLA Biocybernetics Laboratory, and was awarded the prestigious UCLA Distinguished Teaching
Award and Eby Award for Creative Teaching in 2003, and the Lockeed-Martin Award for Teaching Excellence
in 2004. Professor Joe also is a Fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society. Visiting professorships
included stints at universities in Canada, Italy, Sweden and the UK and he was a Senior Fulbright-Hays Scholar
in Italy in 1979.

Professor Joe has been very active in the publishing world. As an editor, he founded and was Editor-in-Chief of
the Modeling Methodology Forum - a department in seven of the American Journals of Physiology - from 1984
thru 1991. As a writer, he authored or coauthored both editions of Feedback and Control Systems (Schaum-
McGraw-Hill 1967 and 1990), more than 200 research articles, and recently published his opus textbook:
Dynamic Systems Biology Modeling and Simulation (Academic Press/Elsevier November 2013 and February
2014).

Much of his research has been based on integrating experimental neuroendocrine and metabolism studies in
mammals and fishes with data-driven mathematical modeling methodology - strongly motivated by his
experiences in “wet-lab”. His seminal contributions to modeling theory and practice are in structural
identifiability (parameter ambiguity) analysis, driven by experimental encumbrances. He introduced the notions
of interval and quasi-identifiablity of unidentifiable dynamic system models, and his lab has developed
symbolic algorithmic approaches and new internet software (web app COMBOS) for computing identifiable
parameter combinations. These are the aggregate parts of otherwise unidentifiable models that can be
quantified - with broad application in model reduction (simplification) and experiment design. His long-term
contributions to quantitative understanding of thyroid hormone production and metabolism in mammals and
fishes have recently been crystallized into web app THYROSIM - for internet-based research and teaching
about thyroid hormone dynamics in humans.

Last but not least, Professor Joe is a passionate straight-ahead jazz saxophone player (alto and tenor), an
alternate career begun in the 1950s in NYC at Stuyvesant High School - temporarily suspended when he started
undergrad school, and resumed again in middle-age. He recently added flute to his practice schedule and he and
his band - Acoustically Speaking -can be found occasionally gigging in Los Angeles or Honolulu haunts.

Great book!
By Eugene Eckstein
Your book has enriched the course on modeling and physiology that I teach to our juniors. Last year we were able to cover the first 8 chapters in a semester plagued by ice-days and closings. The treatment is coherent and blends biology, engineering and mathematics in a sound way.

Nessa has been promised as a bride to the Reverend McDuff, and her 14th birthday is just days away. The reverend has told her that it is God's will that she become his wife, but she is not willing to enter a loveless marriage. She runs away by stagecoach to Prairie River, KS. Once there, she faces the constant fear that someone will send her back to Missouri, causing her to keep to herself and not share in the confidences of those who would be her friends. Through it all, her faith keeps her strong as she tries to make a new life for herself. In this first book in the series, Gregory has created strong, realistic Christian characters. Nessa's world, an 1865 prairie settlement town, is rich in description and historical detail. Nessa's faith, apparent throughout the book in the prayers she writes, scripture verses, and hymn lyrics, is not overwhelming, but rather flows with the narrative. An enjoyable story with a memorable protagonist.

Fantastic Start to An Amazing New Series
By Erika Sorocco
The year is 1865. The Civil War is just ending, President Abraham Lincoln has just been assassinated, and orphan Vanessa (Nessa) Clemens is just about to celebrate her 14th bithday. Meaning that she will be forced to leave the orphanage that has been her home for so many years, albeit, not the best home, and marry Reverend McDuff. Reverend McDuff is a kind enough man, but is so much older than Nessa, not to mention that he's extremely boring, and he has no desire for children, as Nessa does. So, as opposed to marrying Reverend McDuff, like she is supposed to, she plans to escape from Missouri, and head for Prairie River, Kansas, a fairly new town where Nessa is hoping to finally start over. Once there, Nessa is unsure of whether she made the right decision or not. She is broke, has nowhere to stay, has no friends or family, and is treated unkindly by many of the townspeople, as they don't trust a newcomer with no family. Nessa is now finding that she must rely on herself, her courage, and her faith, or she will never be able to survive in this new land.
Kristiana Gregory has done an amazing job with this new historical fiction series. Nessa is a spirited character, who is head-strong, brave, and kind to all, even those who are unkind to her. She gives the reader the strength and determination to achieve anything they set their mind too, whether a feat big or small. Her story is inspiring, and should be well-received by anyone who has enjoyed the LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE series by Laura Ingalls Wilder, and the MANDIE book series by Lois Gladys Leppard, as PRAIRIE RIVER features many Christian undertones. I look forward to reading A GRATEFUL HARVEST, which is the next installment in this wonderful new series. Don't miss this book, as it is sure to capture the hearts of all, young and old.

This Book Is A Delight!
By Karen Lynn
First of all I just want to say that I loved this book and so did my 11 year old daughter. Nessa the main character is absolutely loveable......this is a book everyone in your family can feel comfortable reading! The story is action packed...you never know whats around the next corner for Nessa. Its historically accurate and its actually a complex plot with intricate relationships. I can't wait for the next Prairie River book!

Don't Miss The Sequel
By BookChic
This was a wonderful book about frontier and pioneer life. It kept me reading and I finished it in one day. But then again, Kristiana Gregory is a wonderful author and that's what I expected from this book. I noticed the other reviewer gave it 4 stars because it leaves you hanging. Well, there is a sequel so don't miss that. It's called A Greatful Harvest.

A great introduction, written with humor
By Elinor
I was won over by the clear presentation of just enough facts. The wild photographs ended up fascinating me. A great introduction, written with humor. Even though it's a kids' book, it holds plenty of interest for adults too.

Interesting, funny and mind-blowing
By Mr. C. Shevlin
What a great little book this is. I always thought a spider could only make one web, and bought this book mainly to see if that's true. I'm glad I did because this is really interesting and funny. It turns out that I can stop feeling guilty about getting rid of the webs - they make a new one every day (and - no spoilers - have an unexpected way of dealing with the old one). There are loads of other things I wasn't expecting to find out about: communist spiders, how spiders respond to coffee and LSD, how weird their bodies are, and under what circumstances they eat their mothers. Oh yes, and there was that tantalisingly odd mention of spider submarines in the blurb. That bit of the book blew my mind. The photos are also really good, if slightly terrifying. Buy it, read it, enjoy it.

A Fascinating Book To Make Friends With Spiders!
By Cate Baum - Editor SPR
This is a really detailed and humorous look at spiders from my colleague at SPR, Avery Hurt. An expert in science writing, she has really triumphed with this book, and my niece, who is spider crazy, loves all the factoids and funny details about spiders, most of which I was fascinated to learn myself. Adults and children alike will love learning with this book, and I hope that Avery writes some more in the series. A must for any family who wants to know more about spiders, and really good to make spiders your friend if you have a fear of them too! Recommended.

This book is the PERFECT companion to the Alef-Bet Hebrew Letter Primer!
By Erin
This book is the PERFECT companion to the Alef-Bet Hebrew Letter Primer! My children and I have been reading the letter primer board book for the past several months and were SO excited to receive this companion piece. My kids love how they can interact by tracing and my husband I have found it useful for our own education as well. This tracing book is re-usable which is nice, so my son feels free to "make a mistake". Thank you, Rachel Chaput for filling a void in the "Hebrew Learning" market!!!
