Big Red Kangaroo (Nature Storybooks), by Claire Saxby

Follow a dominant male kangaroo as he leads his mob in search of food—and holds his own against other males who vie for his role.

In the center of Australia, the sun is setting over the baked earth, and Red Kangaroo stirs from his rest. It's breakfast time, and Red must lead his mob of kangaroos off to find grasses for grazing. But Red is also on the watch for young male kangaroos who are ready to challenge him and try to take his place as leader. Striking illustrations set the mood for a compelling, fact-filled story of red kangaroos in the wilds of Australia.

From School Library Journal
Gr 1–4—"In the center of Australia, far inland, where ocean is a dim memory…a big red kangaroo licks his forearms and lets the early evening breeze wash over him." So begins this narrative account of one night in the life of a male red kangaroo, leader of his mob. From a breakfast of grasses at nightfall to finding shelter in a rainstorm, Red is ever vigilant, looking out for the sharp-toothed dingo or for male rivals from other mobs. Each spread features action-packed illustrations in charcoal and digital media, a page of narrative, and italicized text offering more information or explanation ("A kangaroo's tail is long and strong. It aids in balance, almost like another leg. When a kangaroo moves at full speed, its tail acts like a rudder."). The palette of brown, yellow, orange, gray, and black reflects the heat and night; the animals are gracefully rendered in natural poses. A final page offers additional information. Eloquent writing and large, easy-to-see pictures make this a perfect read aloud for units on Australia, marsupials, or nonfiction.—Barbara Auerbach, New York City Public Schools

Review
Action-packed illustrations... Eloquent writing and large, easy-to-see pictures make this a perfect read aloud for units on Australia, marsupials, or nonfiction.
—School Library Journal

A visually arresting portrait of a species.
—Publishers Weekly

The narrative arc will keep [readers] engaged and perhaps inspire further research. ... Appealing in subject and presentation, this will be a welcome addition to primary-grade nonfiction collections.
—Kirkus Reviews

This clearly written book has expressive, sophisticated charcoal-and-digital artwork that is very different from the cartoonlike illustrations in most picture books involving kangaroos. An interesting combination of a matter-of-fact fictional narrative and facts.

Red Kangaroos and How They Live
By tvtv3
BIG RED KANGAROO is a non-fictional children's book about red kangaroos. The book follows Red and his mob of kangaroos around in Australian wild. Written and geared towards children, the book contains several facts about red kangaroos: where they live, how they travel, how the leader of a mob is chosen, etc. I find kangaroos fascinating and enjoyed reading BIG RED KANGAROO. It makes a great book for any child interested in kangaroos or a resource to use when studying the creatures.

If you are looking for a picture book with plenty of information about kangaroos this is the book for you. As you follow a mob of red kangaroos in the wilds of Australia you'll not only learn about their daily existence but also there are plenty of facts about the creatures in general. This would be a good book to consult for a report or one any child who loves learning about exotic animals might find very interesting.
