Gr 5–7—This sci-fi adventure story starts out with several interesting, if somewhat familiar, elements: Gilbert Sullivan discovers "circle makers," aka Martian visitors, in his family's field and is taken aboard a UFO (albeit willingly) and goes on a trip to Mars where he discovers a blue-skinned race of Martians and befriends the titular Aoleon. Unfortunately, though LeVasseur clearly details the inner workings of the spaceship and is adept at describing the astronomy and technology, there is not enough development of plot or character motivation. For example, readers may wonder why the protagonist makes a "prayful wish" to escape his home and parents when the only evidence of his unhappiness is a slim reference to his parents arguing. Gilbert is soon revealed as a chosen one, and he and Aoleon are tapped to save the beleaguered planet from an evil dictator and an artificial intelligence device that controls the government. The author is clearly invoking Orson Scott Card's works, "Harry Potter," Star Trek, and other classic science fiction tales. This novel, however, lacks the depth of character, plot development, and world-building that are hallmarks of those other great works. As the story continues on for another 400 pages in subsequent parts, it's possible these shortcomings are overcome in later installments. Computer-generated, 3-D illustrations provide an interesting partnership to the spaceships and Martian landscape. Enjoy a hilarious and exciting trip to the 4th planet!

VERDICT: This short hilarious science fiction story, with gorgeous illustrations, will make you spend a very enjoyable time, as you get to know Gilbert and his friend Aoléon and follow them to the 4th planet. It is worth the trip!
I am so glad I was invited on the tour for this cool short science-fiction / fantasy saga (this is just part 1) for middle-grade readers! There is much to love in Aoléon The Martian Girl: A Science Fiction and Fantasy Saga – Part 1: First Contact, and enough to attract readers of all ages!
With some scenes that may remind you of E.T., you meet young Gilbert. He realizes he has strange dreams the nights when mysterious crop-circle formations appear on his neighbor’s farm. One night, curiosity wins: he goes out and walks towards a powerful light. He meets the driver of a spaceship, the girl Aoléon, who has the power to read his thoughts and memories, and does not hesitate to go with her for a ride, a happy change to his unhappy home where his parents constantly fight.
You will need to read the book to see all the new things Gilbert is led to discover. The book takes place alternatively on the 4th planet (with great descriptions of their megalopolis), at Gilbert’s place, on his neighbor’s farm, at an Air Force Base in Kansas, where a radar controller plays videos games instead of doing his job, and in the White House. There are some really smart elements inserted in the story.
One thing intrigues me, and the answer is not in part 1: why is the girl named Aoléon? What does it mean?
The fonts for the chapters titles are just awesome, perfectly designed for the book! The illustrations are also very neat. There are lots of hilarious scenes, for instance with flying cows. I can easily see this book as an animated movie. Right now it exists as a video game, and there’s also a song.

I absolutely loved the graphics in this book.

Gilbert Sullivan has been having dreams lately of aliens. His mom says it is him playing too many video games. Gilbert awakes him his latest nightmare. He hears a noise and goes to look out of his telescope. He originally thought it was a shooting star but then realizes that it is a space ship. It has landed in the corn field. Gilbert rushes out and bumps into someone. A girl. Her name is Aoleon. She is from Mars.
I absolutely loved the graphics in this book. They were not your usual graphics. They were just like out of a video game. They were eye catching, vivid and colorful and just popped off the pages. All the time while I was reading this book on my computer. Then there was the story itself. Gilbert and Aoleon are great together. I was a little jealous of all of the cool fun that Gilbert was having with Aoleon in her space ship traveling all over the world. There was plently of action to keep this story moving along at a good pace. Also, I like that the author did not use a lot of big words. For the younger readers it would be hard to pronounce the words and understand what they mean. Even though the author did put a glossary at the back of the book with the definitions. This is book one. There are five books in this series. So now is a good time to start this series. Plus check out the Itunes album to this book.

Brent LeVasseur's AOLEON shares a storyline and characters you aren't soon to forget

What would you do if you were introduced to an alien from Mars? Sounds like one of those questions you would be asked by a friend for a laugh but in AOLEON: THE MARTIAN GIRL this is very much what happens with curious Gilbert that we meet in the book---and that is just the beginning of their adventure.
I got an advance copy of this book prior to the release, and I have to say that one of the best things about it for me was the way author Brent LeVasseur was able to entertain and share some valuable lessons along the way. One of the big things was that Aoleon shows us that you can't make it in this world alone. You need help, and that is what she is able to find in Gilbert---whether he thinks he's the right guy for the task at hand or not.
The other thing I appreciated was that when things are going wrong (as they clearly were on Mars) you can't be afraid to speak up, even if it's unpopular. Aoleon's desire to see better life for her planet is something that I believe we can all appreciate, and hopefully will lead us to treat each others and the planet better.
A great start to a series that is definitely showing promise with book one, AOLEON is one of those characters you aren't soon to forget.
