I'm not caring for the illustrations they are not that appealing to a small child, but the soft cover and the rhyming stories make up for that.

And kept him safe ‘til he was grown.”
P.J. Lyons writes in her children’s book, "Little Chick’s Bible."

This sixteen-page board book targets two to five-year-old children who enjoy stories about the Bible. With no extremely scary or violent scenes, it would best be read out loud to beginner readers due to some complicated wording. This reviewer wishes all pronouns of God were capitalized for reverence.

Author Lyons has written several children’s Bible books and currently lives in Michigan. Illustrator Mitchell’s full-page colorful drawings cover every right side of the opened pages, with happy facial expressions that will capture a child’s interest. A simplistic black font is on the left side of the page with a yellow chick drawing at the bottom.

The first thing a reader notices is the soft fabric cover portraying a yellow chick with a short pull-out beak and wings on the front. The book includes an easy-to-open clear plastic snap pouch for protection with a cardboard insertion mentioning its contents.

Inside, the left sides of the pages contain the stories’ titles with Bible verses listed underneath. Eight rhyming lines are stated, which may be confusing to some young readers. The engaging illustration is on the opposite page.

Containing eight stories from the Bible that have some duplication of other authored books, there are four each from the Old and New Testaments. This one includes creation, Noah, Moses, David, Jesus’s birth, the Good Samaritan, Jesus’s feeding the people, and His death and resurrection. Noah’s ark full of animals is tossing on the sea while Goliath looks mad as David smiles. There is no depiction of Christ on the cross, but an angel telling others of His resurrection.

Although the book lacks the eternal plan of salvation or why Jesus had to die on the cross for our sins, it does promote several stories of the Holy Bible. Young ones may want to cuddle with the soft chick-clad book and need to be prompted to learn the stories inside that have little to do with the animal that is included in only one of the illustrations.

Little Chick's Bible by P. J. Lyons, Melanie Mitchell is a lovely plush children’s Bible board book. This collection of eight historical events has been retold in a unique and ingenious way that will capture any child attention and curiosity of God’s word. The cover is a soft yellow chicken with movable arms and beak. Each section consists of two sturdy but not too thick board book pages. The first page includes the historical event title, a Bible verse where the original event may be found, a beautifully simplified author’s version, and a Little Chicks Bible seal. The second page is a full side artistic illustration that brings to life the words your child is either hearing or reading; depending on the child’s age. The artwork creations are full color and charmingly designed to keep little eyes moving about the page in exploration, really bringing the Bible to life.
I absolutely love Lyons version of the Bible for children. It is durable enough for daily use, and is well constructed. Children from newborn to about five years old will cherish and benefit greatly with this book. In simplifying the passages Lyons was able to create something that not only captures the reader and introduces them to poetry but also honestly conveys the Biblical principles and truths of God’s Word. The font size and selection along with the word usage make this book and excellent reader for the older child who is beginning to read. There are many sight and sound words along with more thought-provoking passages that will keep the challenged and introduce new vocabulary.
I would most defiantly recommend this book to everyone with infants or young children. I personally plan on purchasing a few copies. One for my great niece and as gifts for the many baby showers I will be attending. It is a gift everyone will appreciate.

Whether, eating jelly beans for dinner, cleaning up monster poop or just having some magic-tastically good fun with his pal the Murkle Monster, Wexford will cast a spell on your heart and tickle your funny bone. With eye-popping illustrations that fill the pages as well as your imagination, Mr. Spinner does his namesake proud and spins a fantastical tale that is fun for children of all ages. I highly recommend this entertaining book for your child because there’s no slight of hand, no illusions, no hocus pocus here—just good clean fun. I bought this extra-ordinarily-magic-tastically fun and charming book for my one-and-a-half-year-old and she absolutely adores it. The first night she received the book, she asked us to read it to her three times! The pictures are colorful and engaging, and the story is clever and fun. Author Spinner has a gift for capturing the voice of an excited child, and for creating characters who will stay with you and your child long after you’ve closed the book. As a children’s book author myself, I have a great deal of appreciation and admiration for Spinner and Collins! My family and I can’t wait to see what adventures await Weldon and Murkle.

This book will help you get your priorities straight and set you on a positive path toward the ability to produce professional results with a fraction of the crew, equipment, overhead and time. But that’s all it can do–set you on a positive path.

It’s not to say that there is no hard work involved and it’s not to say you won’t make mistakes. I still do. But it is to say that if you understand and apply these fundamentals, you will arrive much sooner to the place you want to be.

This book is an amazing find! It is one of those rare gems that occasionally crosses one's path, if at all. I say this because the author has distilled a wide assortment of complex issues related to videography into one easy-to-understand source. The author, Joe Caneen, is a veteran videographer with years of industry experience - 30 years and counting, in fact. Yet, unlike many seasoned authorities of this caliber who usually get locked into trade convention or spout out-of-reach techno jargon, Mr. Caneen is refreshingly unpretentious and accessible. So, if you are a beginner videographer who values a didactic approach that fuses intellect with common-sense, that balances artistic technique with practicality, then the good spirits of fate have led you to the right place. Read this text! Learn the many nuggets of wisdom contained within! And you will most assuredly thank me later.

The most inspiring video teacher I have found!

I have waited patiently... oh who am I kidding, I've never been patient about anything! But I've waited for this book to be finished because - well, because I had no choice. But Joe (The Video Whisperer) was kind enough to share snippets of the text on his blog site during the process, and that helped.

Let me preface (what, preface has to be at the top?), okay then let me just say that I have not read the full finished work as yet and am reviewing it anyway. I don't normally do that - but want to give full disclosure to it. I do feel qualified to offer you my opinion now because I have read so much of it already, and am familiar with the work of this expert craftsman. Joe, from what I've learned over time, has spent a career behind the camera in many types of productions. The kind of work where you get one chance to get it right, and that's it. And even if you can take a second try at it - it comes at a high cost. You don't have a long and rewarding career if you don't excel at meeting those objectives.

Good quality cameras are readily available now on nearly every budget level. But if you want to get beyond "point it that way and hit the red button" skill level, you need advice and insight. And The Video Whisperer is the best I've found. In part, I freely admit, because I just like him. His personality and easy communication style are very relaxing and familiar. And I find that with that relaxed feeling, my mind is much more receptive to the information being given.

I make videos on YouTube - mostly about the shooting sports and guns in general, so I was not only not offended by the many gun references, I enjoy them. If you are of a different opinion on that topic, don't fret - the book really is about cameras and how to use them. The analogies are just too easy, and I think quite entertaining. I mention that I make videos because my point is that I fumble at it, and I struggle with it. The improvements I have made have come largely from the inspiration and information from The Video Whisperer - whom I discovered accidentally by watching his review of a Sony camera (that I ultimately purchased and use). The quality of his work in that review left my jaw on the table, and I've been hooked since.

If you have a passion, just an interest, or simply a need to learn more and improve your skills with video cameras, I can't recommend this book enough. What I think you will receive from it above all is INSPIRATION!

Sometimes you find a book that are so perfect for what you are looking for that you almost can't believe it.
If you looking to buy a book, that will make you a better videographer, this is it!!!
I have been a professional photographer (portrait) for about 25 years, I then switch to programming and have been a professional programmer for another 25 years. Now I am retired and try to make videos just for my own family use. However, this book has inspired me to begin thinking about do some jobs for payments. And I'm almost 70 years.
If you buy this book, I can almost guarantee that you will not be dissapointed. It is easy to read, and it is full of tips that you can learn from. (I used some of them when I try to get into the programming business. So I know they work.)
I found Joe’s book after watching a review for a video camera. No, I did not buy the camera he was reviewing. I brought the Sony AX33 (after looking at AX100E for a very long time). Joe’s book has convince me that I really need two cameras, and I will later buy another camera with more manual controls, which I know I would miss on the AX33. However, the plan was always to buy two cameras. (hyssh – don’t tell my wife.)
To record in 4K is good since I now can trim clips without losing quality. (Yeah I make HD movies. We still do not have a 4K TV. But maybe next year…)
This book is a gem - go get it! It’s almost free too.
Sorry if my English is not correct – my native language is Norwegian, but I had to learn English to become a professional programmer so…

A Wealth of Information

I learned quite a bit from this fascinating book. The author’s main focus is on the rarity and/or value of various metals, e.g., the rare earths, gold, silver, platinum and several others. In doing so, he discusses our planet’s natural resources as well as their distribution, geology, chemistry and the technologies that would benefit from these metals. He also delves into various quite interesting issues such as politics, both national and international, military conflicts, economics, waste disposal and even the possibility of acquiring these metals from outside our planet.

I found the author’s breadth and depth of knowledge to be quite impressive, especially on the related socio-political issues in the world. I also found the writing style to be clear, lively, friendly, often witty and widely accessible.

On the down side, I found a number of inaccuracies mainly in the early chapters where nuclear physics is discussed. I have listed the main ones at the end of this review for those who are interested as well as for consideration by the author should a revised edition of this book be published in the future.

Overall, I found this book to be quite captivating. It can be enjoyed by anyone, particularly science enthusiasts as well as those interested in the social, political and scientific problems that may be faced in the development of new technology.

Inaccurate/Misleading Information
1) At the bottom of page 53, it seems to be implied that plutonium was used in both bombs dropped on Japan during World War II. In fact, the Hiroshima bomb was a uranium bomb.
2) Near the bottom of page 57, the Ivy Mike test is discussed where it is pointed out that it was a “twelve-kiloton explosion – four times the combined might of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki”. In fact the yield of the Ivy Mike test was about 10 megatons making it about 300 times the yield of the combined bombs dropped on Japan.
3) The discussion on the decay of carbon-14 on page 72 and its use in radiocarbon dating is incorrect. Carbon-14 decays by beta minus emission to stable nitrogen-14. What is used in carbon-14 dating is the concentration ratio of carbon-14 atoms relative to carbon-12 atoms in a formerly living organism - carbon-14 decaying at a known rate, thus decreasing the above ratio at a known rate over time. Carbon -14 is never stable, before or after the organism dies.
4) Regarding the creation of curium and americium, near the top of page 73, it should be noted that neither of these two elements have any stable isotopes.
5) Near the bottom of page 101, the inverse square law is discussed. In calculating the dose rate at a given distance from a source of ionizing radiation, several factors must be taken into account, e.g., nature of radiation, shielding, scattering, source shape, etc. If one is using the inverse square law, this implies that the source must be a point source as seen at the distance where the dose rate is being determined.

Accessible Introduction to Rare Metals

It is indeed rare that a book written by a chemist can be described as delightful, but "Rare" by Keith Veronese stands out as just that. Trough a well-written and very readable narrative, Veronese offers the reader both insight into why rare earth metals are becoming more and more important to everyday life as well as the broader history associated with the discoveries and uses of such metals. The book begins with a brief explanation of the difficulty of harvesting rare metals. He then moves into a discussion of what constitutes a rare metal and an examination of various metals and their histories. Rare metals influence everything from international politics and weaponry to smartphones and hybrid cars. As an example of their importance for our lives together in the future, I found the suggestion that cutting "off the rare earth supply line" would "end the green planet revolution" (42) rather chilling. Veronese's subsequent brainstorming for ways to creatively sustain the use of rare metals is therefore all the more interesting.

All in all, this book is excellent. I am no scientist—I majored in History and have a graduate degree in Theology—yet I was able to read this book and understand it. Truly, Veronese displays the ability to craft narrative and present scientific knowledge in an accessible and even exciting way, which is an underrated but much needed skill for writers. Moreover, I could see this book used in Intro to Chemistry college classes (and even in high school classes) to get students interested in ways Chemistry applies to everyday life. I highly recommend it.

Good info on an unusual subject.

This book covers a topic which most people would know little about. I found the book to be very interesting and I learned quite a lot about so called "strategic metals". I found a few errors in the book. Mostly typos and incorrect grammar that a good proofreader would have minimized. These occured mainly in the first 25% or so of the text. Also found were some instances of just being factually incorrect.
The Fat Man and Little Boy weapons that were deployed against Japan were both referred to as containing plutonium. Little Boy was a uranium bomb.
On page 57 phosphine was said to be a form of poison gas used in WW I. The gas used in the war was phosgene. Phosphine is commonly used to fumigate grain.
Gold is said to be a spectacular conductor and that is why it is used as a plating on HDMI cables and a plethora of computer parts. Silver is the best conductor followed by copper and then annealed copper. Next comes gold and then aluminum. Gold is used as a plating because it will not tarnish and is still a very good conductor.
On page 203 the feasibility of mining the ocean floor for manganese nodules comes up and also the ruse used by the United States of the Glomar Explorer supposedly built by Howard Hughes to conduct the mining operation. The United States was actually attempting to raise K-129, a submarine that the USSR owned which had gone missing after a catastrophic accident at sea. Veronese says that the Soviets knew the general location of the sub but couldn't locate it. They didn't actually have any good idea where it was. The US knew where it was from "hearing" the death throes of the sub with SOSUS, a network of listening devices on the ocean floor. Through triangulation they did locate the sub.
One of the more interesting subjects in the text (at least for me) was the possibility of mining the moon and asteroids. The asteroids named 4034 Vishnu and 2000 BM19 are said to be less than a kilometer in diameter and estimated to contain more than 20 trillion dollars of material. In spite of the scientists' alledged abilities to tell exactly the composition of an asteroid by the analysis of it's reflected light, I still have trouble believing that monetary value for asteroids of that size. Yes, I could be wrong however.
All in all though, it is a good read and most people would definitely learn something about an interesting subject.

About the Author

Dean R. Appling is the Lester J. Reed Professor of Biochemistry and the Associate Dean for Research and Facilities for the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin, where he has taught and done research for the past 29 years. Dean earned his B.S. in Biology from Texas A&M University (1977) and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Vanderbilt University (1981). The Appling laboratory studies the organization and regulation of metabolic pathways in eukaryotes, focusing on folate-mediated one-carbon metabolism. The lab is particularly interested in understanding how one-carbon metabolism is organized in mitochondria, as these organelles are central players in many human diseases. In addition to coauthoring the 4th edition of Biochemistry, a textbook for majors and graduate students, Dean has published over 60 scientific papers and book chapters.

 

As much fun as writing a textbook might be, Dean would rather be outdoors. He is an avid fisherman and hiker. Recently, Dean and his wife, Maureen, have become entranced by the birds on the Texas coast. They were introduced to bird-watching by coauthor Chris Mathews and his wife Kate–an unintended consequence of writing textbooks!

 

Spencer J. Anthony-Cahill is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Western Washington University (WWU), Bellingham, WA. Spencer earned his B.A. in chemistry from Whitman College, and his Ph.D. in bioorganic chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. His graduate work, in the laboratory of Peter Schultz, focused on the biosynthetic incorporation of unnatural amino acids into proteins. Spencer was an NIH postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Bill DeGrado (then at DuPont Central Research), where he worked on de novo peptide design and the prediction of the tertiary structure of the HLH DNA-binding motif. He then worked for five years as a research scientist in the biotechnology industry, developingrecombinant hemoglobin as a treatment for acute blood loss. In 1997, Spencer decided to pursue his long-standing interest in teaching and moved to WWU, where he is today. In 2012 Spencer was recognized by WWU with the Peter J. Elich Award for Excellence in Teaching. Research in the Anthony—Cahill laboratory is directed at the protein engineering and structural biology of oxygen-binding proteins. The primary focus is on circular permutation of human b-globin as a means of developing a single-chain hemoglobin with desirable therapeutic properties as a blood replacement.

 

Outside the classroom and laboratory, Spencer is a great fan of the outdoors–especially the North Cascades and southeastern Utah, where he has often backpacked, camped, climbed, and mountain biked. He also plays electric bass (poorly) in a local blues—rock band and teaches Aikido in Bellingham.

 

Christopher K. Mathews is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry at Oregon State University. He earned his B.A. in chemistry from Reed College (1958) and Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Washington (1962). He served on the faculties of Yale University and the University of Arizona from 1963 until 1978, when he moved to Oregon State University as Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, a position he held until 2002. His major research interest is the enzymology and regulation of DNA precursor

metabolism and the intracellular coordination between deoxyribonucleotide synthesis and DNA replication. From 1984 to 1985, Dr. Mathews was an Eleanor Roosevelt International Cancer Fellow at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, and in 1994—1995 he held the Tage Erlander Guest Professorship at Stockholm University.

 

Dr. Mathews has published about 185 research papers, book chapters, and reviews dealing with molecular virology, metabolic regulation, nucleotide enzymology, and biochemical genetics. From 1964 until 2012 he was principal investigator on grants from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and the Army Research Office. He is the author of Bacteriophage Biochemistry (1971) and coeditor of Bacteriophage T4 (1983) and Structural and Organizational Aspects of Metabolic Regulation (1990). He was lead author of four editions of

Biochemistry, a textbook for majors and graduate students. His teaching experience includes undergraduate, graduate, and medical school biochemistry courses. He has backpacked and floated the mountains and rivers,

respectively, of Oregon and the Northwest. As an enthusiastic birder he has served as President of the Audubon Society of Corvallis and is President of the Great Basin Society, which operates the Malheur Field

Station in eastern Oregon.

About the Author
Brent VanDervort holds both a mechanical engineering degree and a business management degree. As owner of Fatman Fabrications, he has designed and developed the various chassis parts and kits sold by his company. VanDervort has written a technical column for the Goodguys Gazette, the monthly magazine of the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association, for more than 15 years. In addition to numerous articles in other magazines, he recently wrote Building Hot Rods: 30 Years of Advice from Fatman Fabrication’s Brent VanDervort.

While many of the topics will not apply to every build those that do will save many hours and provide a better finished ride

This book is not another picture how-to book but rather instructional text with appropriate photos solving specific problems we all encounter in Hot Rod building. While many of the topics will not apply to every build those that do will save many hours and provide a better finished ride. I quickly found a couple of sections specific to my current build that only could have been learned by years of experience. A valuable resource for the Hot Rod, Street Rod and stock restorer alike.

Hot Rod Basics

Wolfgang Publications had the foresight to gather together in one place the very useful hot rod basics articles written by Brent Vandervort. This anthology of his how to articles are placed in a logical order and is a convenient tool when you need a refresher. Each article, as with any good how to book, starts with emphasizing planning out what you plan to do perform you even buy the first part. Like when I use to rebuild or modify a system/car I would basically have a blueprint completed in my mind at a minimum before I started to work. This saves a lot of time and money.

Each chapter in this book is very easy to read and understand. The technical information and tips are accurate on the various stages of fabricating your hot rod. Every chapter focuses on a particular system and is very clear. If you have questions about a part of your build that you are working on read the appropriate chapter and it will most likely answer your question. Though a very useful book in my automotive library I consider it a book on important basics. There is even a chapter discussing the merits of using a modern engine with it improve efficiency, Though I enjoyed building my own and ram intakes (but that is not what this book is about.)

If you plan to build a hot rod, even if a daily driver, I would suggest starting with this book to get your frame work on building the car in our head first. Even if you had read the articles when original published, this book is well worth the price. 4+ stars.

I am not a hot rodder, but have always been interested in the art of building custom cars, hot rods, sports cars and restoring cars. I have two cars in my garage in need of restoration and I feel this book will help with many of the details that arise over years of neglect. I also feel this book gives me a greater insight into building an outstanding custom car. As I have said I am not a hot rodder, many of the techniques and theories he writes about not easily understood by me, I am sure are clear to people involved in the hobby and can easily be deciphered by the serious car enthusiast, I for one intend to look into this more deeply. Definitely a book to whet the appetite of the enthusiast and to aid the serious hot rodder.

LI've to give the coloring book w crayons for gifts that way if the kiddo wants to Crack it open and start coloring away, they can! I always give a small zippered "crayon" pouch too.
Even if the crayons arent crayola quality, its good to throw in the bag for busy a activity when you are out and about this book does have post cards that are cute and would be fun for your daughter, niece or grandaughter to send to a loved one:)
