Super Series Keeps Improving!

This book is sheer pleasure. But if you're unfamiliar with Tony Abbott's magical realm of Droon, DON'T START HERE! The Sleeping Giant of Goll is our intrepid trio's sixth action-filled travelogue down the MAGIC STAIRCASE. Young readers, as well as those you read to, should accompany Eric, Julie, and Neal through each adventure in order, making fantastic friends (here, the furry Oobja), avoiding fearsome foes (such as the resurrected colossus, Zor), and learning Droon's mystical lore. Unlike some chapter books, each Droon visit surpasses its predecessor. Rather than repeating a simple formula, the author weaves a rich and intricate web from one book to the next. Abbott consistently rewards frequent readers with subtle linkage to preceding events, just as he tantalizes with insight into unsolved riddles and future challenges. I marvel at Mr. Abbott's discipline in encouraging teamwork and maintaining gender neutrality -- Droon's Princess Keeah and the upper-world's Julie share responsibility (for both success and failure) with Eric and Neal; similarly, both of Princess Keeah's parents, King Zello the Viking and the shape-shifting Queen Relna, willingly stand alone toe-to-toe against the evil sorcerer Lord Sparr. My son cannot wait for more wisdom from the wizard Gaelen, adventure with the spider-troll Max, or pursuit from Ninns upon winged-groggles, and he's right. Great children' book

My 8 soon to be 9 years old son read this book and was not only fascinated by it, but have to read it again. Only Harry Potter was able to do this to him once. I'm just happy to have found such a great book and in series, so it can provide him with great fun and good educational entertainment. Now we are totally hook and will continue getting the rest of the series.

These three kids enter a secret stairway to Droon where weird things happen like trees can attack. But there's a evil guy named Sparr who wants to take over Droon. Now Sparr unleashed a old giant to help him take over Droon. Then a mysterios blue dragon comes to kill the giant.

Sandra Madden, a graduate of the SI Newhouse School of Communications at Syracuse University is a photographer and writer, an Administrative Assistant at the Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts (BIA-MA), and a brain injury survivor. Sandra Madden’s Hearts All Around Us is an inspirational portrayal of her personal journey to cope with living with Traumatic Brain Injury. Her book explains the simplicity of her technique to quiet her brain – focusing on one simple thing – searching her surroundings for hearts. She has laid out a delightful collection of photographs that portray the shape of hearts appearing naturally in our world around us everyday. Her text and selected quotes are both motivational and enlightening, dedicated to educate about TBI and help others suffering with challenges of any sort. Her art softens the mood and her message leaves the reader with hope and lifts the spirit. Sandra’s book is worthy of a place in everyone’s homes, lives and HEARTS.

There is nothing more beautiful than finding hearts during our every day journeys. Sandra captures the beauty of hearts through her passion of photography. This book carries an inspiring message of love, and overcoming trauma. Her story empowers others who have traveled a similar path, to find something that brings peace even within the pain. The compassionate, thoughtful sayings, coupled with the incredible heart photos, opens all our hearts to the love that surrounds us, no matter what we are experiencing.
I highly recommend this book as a gift for yourself to read everyday... and as a gift to any heart you touch along your journey!

Toured to Death

The description immediately made me think of Clue. It’s my favorite boardgame and I adore the movie, so I knew I had to read Toured to Death. Amy and her mother have started up a travel agency, but they don’t just ship clients off to exotic locations. They specialize in custom excursions. Their newest one is a live action, murder mystery, role playing game set in Monte Carlo. Twenty-four wealthy patrons have gathered to take part in the whodunit, but then the game creator gets murdered, as well as one of the players. On top of that, the game was based on a real murder whom some of the players were present for. Coincidence? I think not.

Toured to Death is told in two parts. I loved the first half, but the format did make the mystery feel really long and drawn out. The beginning is all the staged murder mystery for the guests to solve. They’re all extremely into it, and become extra motivated to “win” when they learn of the creator’s death. This part was so much fun! I adored this whole idea of getting to see a new city or country by running around and finding clues! Then around halfway, the game is over, a player dies right at the dinner table, and they suspect it was the same person who killed the creator and possibly the same murderer from the original case. But why?

The second half was good too, but it was less interesting to me, since Amy was back in the city and playing detective. She’s mainly trying to get one of the team captains off the hook, since they were arrested back in Italy. I never figured out who the real murder was or why, and I was honestly shocked by the reveal. There are a few things in the beginning of Toured to Death that rubbed me the wrong way, but it turned out that they were hints for the murderer. While I did like this twist (yay diversity!), I do think it could have been handled better.

Toured to Death also isn’t as clean as other Cozies I’ve read. I didn’t mind, since I don’t read them for their lack of suggestive content, but I know others do. There is some strong language at the end, and it really did feel out of place. It easily could have been left out, and actually fits with my “could have been handled better” opinion. There’s also a bunch of sex jokes and talks of sex throughout. Plus two characters are killed on the page rather than off, which I understand is the norm. Otherwise, this is another fun mystery.

A fun book of travel, murder, mothers, and mayhem...

I bought this book because it is written by Hy Conrad. I have read several of his books in the Monk series and enjoyed them, so I looked for more books by him. This is a creative story. A murder within a murder mystery game. I enjoyed reading about the travels in the book, but really began to connect with the main character, Amy, after she returned home from her travels. I am looking forward to the next book to see how her life progresses. I looked at a map as the characters traveled so I could get a better idea of the areas they were visiting. Very engaging. I will definitely be getting the next book!!

This was a well written book, and the mystery was very well done, but these two women were not travel agents and could never get approval to open an agency. A store and a business license is not enough.

All the things that children loved about A Light in the Attic and Where the Sidewalk Ends can be found in abundance in this eclectic volume, Silverstein's first book of poetry in 20 years. By turns cheeky and clever and often darkly subversive, the poems are vintage Silverstein, presented in a black-and-white format that duplicates his earlier books. Like Roald Dahl, Silverstein's cartoons and poems are humorously seditious, often giving voice to a child's desire to be empowered or to retaliate for perceived injustice: one child character wields a "Remote-a-Dad" that will instantly control his father, and another dreams of his teachers becoming his students so that when they talk or laugh in class, he can "pinch 'em 'til they [cry]." The poems focus on the unexpected-a piglet receives a "people-back ride" and Medusa's snake-hair argues about whether to be coifed in cornrows or bangs. Sometimes the art traffics in gross-out, as when William Tell gets an arrow through his forehead or a cartoon character sticks carrots in his sockets because he's heard that carrots are good for his eyes. Although some parents and teachers may cringe at such touches, Silverstein's anti-establishment humor percolates as he lampoons conventions (the stork not only brings babies but "comes and gets the older folks/ When it's their time to go"), or discards decorum (a small gardener zips up his pants after watering the plants "that way"). No matter that the author's rhythms and rhymes can be sloppy, or that his annoying insistence on leavin' off the endin' to his ING's seems artificially folksy, Silverstein's ability to see the world from, as he says, "a different angle" will undoubtedly earn this book a wide audience. Grade 3 Up?Fifteen years after A Light in the Attic (1981) and 22 years after Where the Sidewalk Ends (1974, both HarperCollins), Silverstein, whose poetry has achieved cultlike popularity, offers readers another collection. While bodily functions seem to be the source of humor in more poems than in the earlier titles, and while there are fewer wonderful images here, the child appeal is as strong as ever. Once again, Silverstein's pen-and-ink drawings are the perfect accompaniment to the poems, always extending and often explaining the words. The book abounds in energetic wordplay ("I saw an ol' gnome/Take a gknock at a gnat/Who was gnibbling the gnose of his gnu") and childlike silliness ("I only ate one drumstick/At the picnic dance this summer...But everybody's mad at me,/Especially the drummer"). Silverstein writes wonderful nonsense verse, but he has used rhyme and rhythm to greater effect in the past. Well, finally. In this long-overdue follow-up to A Light In The Attic (1981), Silverstein once again displays the talent for wordplay and idea-play that keeps his poetry evergreen. In bumptious verse that seldom runs more than three or four stanzas, he introduces a gallery of daffy characters, including the Terrible Toy-Eating Tookle, a hamburger named James, blissfully oblivious Headphone Harold, and the so-attractive folk attending the ``Rotten Convention''--``Mr. Mud and the Creepin' Crud/And the Drooler and Belchin' Bob,'' to name but a few. The humor has become more alimentary with the years, but the lively, deceptively simple art hasn't changed a bit. Its puzzled-looking young people (with an occasional monster or grimacing grown-up thrown in) provide visual punchlines and make silly situations explicit; a short ten-year-old ``grows another foot''--from the top of his head--and a worried child is assured that there's no mouse in her hair (it's an elephant). Readers chortling their way through this inspired assemblage of cautionary tales, verbal hijinks, and thoughtful observations, deftly inserted, will find the temptation to read parts of it aloud irresistible. Funny poems!

What can I say, except my 10 year old fifth-grader who does not like to read much at all, enjoys reading this book of poems before going to bed each night. I am so grateful he enjoys reading them. I have read some of them outloud to him and they are funny, they ryhme and they have great imagination. If you have a child of any age, I recommend this book to expose him/her to the creative art of poetry and just because they're fun!

I have read this book so many times I can't even count, and it never seems to get old. This book is full of great poems written by a great poet. I have read every one of his books and they all are wonderful. I recommend this book to anyone at any age who enjoys a poetry.

Best of his 3 collections

I purchased Falling Up on a whim, not sure if my 4 year old daughter would like it since much of the humor is derived from plays on words or double meanings. However, she absolutely loved it. Falling Up is a regular request at bedtime - one that I actually don't dread reading for the 100th time. She's even memorized a couple of the shorter poems on her own.
I can't say enough about this book. The first time I read it, I had histerical fits - some of the poems/drawings are just so cleverly ridiculous!
The "Horn Book" review above is way off base. I found Silverstein's previous collections less clever, less consistant in meter, and actually more bizzare. After going back and reading his earlier works, I assumed he'd settled down a bit in his old age. I think the reviewer (if they even read the whole book) was comparing their experience with their memory of encountering his earlier works for the first time.
I think Silverstein's poems are so unexpected that the first book you read becomes your favorite, and all others fail to measure up. A family friend swore we would like "Where the Sidewalk Ends" better, and my mother felt the same about "A Light in the Attic". WRONG - after a week or so of each, we were ready to trade back and read some more "Falling Up".
"Falling Up" is definitely our family's favorite, so if you get only one of the three collections, I recommend you make it this one.

About the Author
Michael Boxwell has been designing solar energy systems since the late 1990s. Initially integrating solar energy into products such as vending machines and portable computers, Michael went on to designing larger systems, including on-building solar and a solar energy systems capable of providing power to entire rural communities in Africa and South America. Michael's most recent solar projects include designing a full-length solar roof for a forthcoming electric car to be launched in 2016, and an electric car solar charging station. He is currently working on a part EU funded project to create a new low-cost solar power station that is capable of providing electricity for entire African villages.

A Great Guide for Solar Enthusiasts

This is a very useful guide for anyone wishing to install a solar system in a number of special situations. It is written primarily from the viewpoint of a user in Great Britain, but the author is quite knowledgeable also about applications and circumstances in the United States and other parts of the world. He discusses a number of applications from stand-alone systems for powering remote sites to home systems that tie into the grid. He discusses thoroughly the selection of system components, even discussing in great detail battery life and the sizing of cable. This book is written for the layman and is light on mathematics and easy to understand. I would recommend it for anyone who is contemplating installing a solar system. It provides perspective on what is currently possible with present day systems and in enough detail to design and generate a cost estimate for realistic systems.

I am finding it really good reading, with relevant information

I am not sure what some of the reviewers are talking about with this book. There is LOTS of information and diagrams, etc. I am finding it really good reading, with relevant information. It seems to be a book that rides in the middle of the information pack. Not too simple, and not too complicated. For me, it is covering all the important data for a successful off grid system.

About the Author
Frank Cost is the James E. McGhee Professor of Visual Media in the School of Photographic Arts & Sciences at Rochester Institute of Technology. He has taught a wide variety of courses in the field of visual media for more than three decades. Frank has been photographing professionally since 1975 and has authored both textbooks and experimental photo books exploring new forms of graphic expression enabled by digital technologies. Not Practical use

Not exactly what I was hoping for. Really wanted this to be similar to a real pilot flight log but when I opened it, I was disappointed and don't really see a functional use for it. See photos for how the flight info is broken down. This is how every page looks.

Logging information for the unknown...

It's okay for what it is... There not enough experience in the field to know exactly what information needs to be captured. For example you fly in an aircraft that you operate, but if you're not flying in the aircraft you're operating then you're an operator not a pilot. Small details like these need to be clarified/settled to a more uniform standard before anyone can produce useful logbook. Until then this will have to do..
