Great Radio DX Source For Offline DXing.
By A. Ebel
This publication is very essential for offline use. It has plenty of information that you need to get your LW-MW, Shortwave and FM DXing done. It has most of the AM broadcasters in the book, but does not have any of the stations are are 1 kW or less in graveyard frequencies like 1230, 1400, and other stations that use power less than 1 kW. It does have a good list of the European long wave, mediumwave, and short wave broadcasters and FM stations for each country in this book with alot of pages. The short wave listings are helpful, but it's pretty difficult to use and the station are not based by the UTC time schedule. It does not list FM translators, boosters, or SCA-FM stations, just radio stations on FM that are based in the major cities such as Richmond, VA, and New York City for example. The interesting thing about this book is that at the end it lists groups and forums you can join via Yahoo!, but it does not list any of the groups based in Facebook. Above all, it's a great off line reference source when you don't have the internet available or if you want to be away from the computer and just tune in the world without depending on the internet for extra information. I know when I go on a vacation or family's house, I will never leave home without this book.

Why this story matters
By ScotFlower
Summary of story: The boy Oliver has just moved to the city and he feels lonely/out of place... then he meets a lost dog named Patch. They hit it off, play the day away, cheer each other up, and Oliver takes the dog home with him. HOWEVER, the dog is owned by someone else and the dog still misses his real owner.... so Oliver has to make the hard decision to find the true owner. He puts up signs but secretly wishes no one will claim the dog and he can keep the dog for himself. Days go by.... and then they run into the real owner on a walk... Oliver is sad to lose the dog.... but then the owner asks him to join them and play together... so in the end Oliver made a friend.

Why this story matters: Children need to know that finders are not keepers. Things and pets belong to someone... so when you find them you seek their real owners. Sometimes you get a reward or make a friend for doing what was right.... but other times you just get the satisfaction in your heart that you did the right thing.

Mankind Beyond Earth: The History, Science, and Future of Human Space Exploration, by Claude A. Piantadosi

Seeking to reenergize Americans' passion for the space program, the value of further exploration of the Moon, and the importance of human beings on the final frontier, Claude A. Piantadosi presents a rich history of American space exploration and its major achievements. He emphasizes the importance of reclaiming national command of our manned program and continuing our unmanned space missions, and he stresses the many adventures that still await us in the unfolding universe. Acknowledging space exploration's practical and financial obstacles, Piantadosi challenges us to revitalize American leadership in space exploration in order to reap its scientific bounty.

Piantadosi explains why space exploration, a captivating story of ambition, invention, and discovery, is also increasingly difficult and why space experts always seem to disagree. He argues that the future of the space program requires merging the practicalities of exploration with the constraints of human biology. Space science deals with the unknown, and the margin (and budget) for error is small. Lethal near-vacuum conditions, deadly cosmic radiation, microgravity, vast distances, and highly scattered resources remain immense physical problems. To forge ahead, America needs to develop affordable space transportation and flexible exploration strategies based in sound science. Piantadosi closes with suggestions for accomplishing these goals, combining his healthy skepticism as a scientist with an unshakable belief in space's untapped―and wholly worthwhile―potential.

Review

An important book by a visionary with his feet planted on the ground.

(Kirkus Reviews)

Finally, a give-it-to-me-straight account of why space exploration matters. In Mankind Beyond Earth, Claude A. Piantadosi folds together science, politics, and culture to demonstrate why a civilization without a spacefaring future is doomed to extinction.

(Neil Degrasse Tyson, astrophysicist, American Museum of Natural History, author of Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier)

In this engaging book, Claude A. Piantadosi presents a concise and accurate history of how our nation's space program arrived at its current uncertain juncture, supplementing it with powerful insights into a wide range of fields, from planetary science to human physiology. This is a compelling work from a scientist committed to expanding the human exploration of our universe.

(Michael L. Gernhardt, NASA astronaut, manager of the Environmental Physiology Laboratory at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center)

Recommended for readers intrigued by the real-life requirements of space exploration.

(Library Journal)

This nicely written volume will appeal to the general public and space enthusiasts who want to learn about the hazards of human space exploration.

(Choice)

Piantadosi's goal throughout the book is to explain to the lay audience why spaceexploration is difficult and important. He achieves this first goal in a clear manner, very accessible to someone without a technical background.

(Lisa Messeri MetaScience)

Piantadosi assembles and presents the best of the vast amount of information we have accumulated… it will kindle in many a sense of excitement for some of the great adventures still awaiting us as a nation.

Review

A whole generation has grown up with tales of the glory of man's excursion into space, and this fact-filled and stimulating book ties the story together and extends it to further exploration of the Moon again and Mars.

(Bruce D. Butler, University of Texas Medical School at Houston)

Mankind Beyond Earth offers a wide-ranging analysis of the challenges facing human space exploration. Using examples from polar expeditions, aviation history, undersea voyages, and space missions, Claude A. Piantadosi shows that exploration is unforgiving to those who fail to plan. Piantadosi details the barriers that must be surmounted for humans to leave Earth for long voyages. He supports his case with information from diverse disciplines, including microbiology, radiation physics, botany, astronomy, and physiology. He also makes a strong argument for the United States to refocus on exploring the Moon and to use Moon exploration both for scientific discovery and as preparation for longer trips to Mars.

(Jay C. Buckey MD, former payload-specialist astronaut, professor of medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth)

About the Author

Claude A. Piantadosi MD is professor and director of the F. G. Hall Environmental Laboratory at Duke University. Educated at the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, he trained in undersea medicine and saturation diving in the U.S. Navy and in respiratory physiology and pulmonary medicine at Duke. He spent thirty years as a resource consultant to NASA. He is an author of more than three hundred scientific papers and The Biology of Human Survival: Life and Death in Extreme Environments.

Mankind Beyond Earth
By Clare O'Beara
Carl Sagan said that mankind would have to explore space to survive. Yet budget and programme cuts mean NASA has to pay Russia $62.7 million per astronaut they carry to the International Space Station aboard Soyuz vessels. Written from an American point of view, but ultimately the view of humanity's future, this factual book reassesses the benefits and difficulties of space exploration.

Robots are cheaper and easier to send as explorers than to send all the support systems required by fragile humans. Yet manned space missions have given spinoff benefits, such as Teflon, better prosthetics, telemedicine, better preserved foods, better kidney dialysis machines and advances in aviation safety. Space science has given us satellites, so improved communications, forecasting and views of changing climates - and detection of near-flying asteroids. Research will benefit humanity, whether in the field of pure physics or seeing if a biodome can grow enough food to support life on the Moon.

Claude Piantadosi supports returning to the Moon, as a testing ground for the survival systems we will need to explore Mars. He analyses problems at NASA, explaining that when innovators get stifled by red tape and budget cuts they skip off to private industry. We have come an awe-inspiring distance since the start of the twentieth century, when heavier-than-air flight was first achieved by the Wrights. We have landed a robot on Titan, Saturn's largest moon, and Mars Rovers trundle across that planet and send back data.

Biomedicine explores how we can live under stressful conditions, such as a year or more in space. We see comparisons with Tibetan and Andean populations, each of which has found a different physiological adaptation to altitude. Polar explorations and undersea work are all steps along the journey. Space exploration to date is of course reprised, including the tragic accidents and misfires. Living off local and recycled resources is the only way to establish a stable habitat beyond the Moon, as the cost and difficulty of resupply would be prohibitive. The current technology for space travel is explained and combinations can be used, from solar power to nuclear power. Recycling and discovering local water and oxygen are top priority for any new base. Growing food and providing nutrients will be vital, as away from sunlight our vitamin D levels drop, and combined with microgravity our bones become brittle. The author explores the currently understood physiological alterations of space travel on astronauts, from osteoporosis to cancers. Radiation is a major hazard, both solar and background. And what to do with the trash, from human waste to food packaging? Is it ethical to start a waste dump on Mars?

As to where we can go, Venus is unfortunately a hazardously hot environment so Mars is the obvious challenge. We could also visit small bodies such as asteroids - the large Ceres would be a good target - or some moons of large but further planets, such as Titan and Ganymede. As for other stars, we would need fast propulsion to reach those in any reasonable timeframe.

I was astonished that Piantadosi still thinks Mercury is tidally locked to the sun (page 56). Possibly this was just badly phrased? We know now that due to orbital factors we see the same face each time it comes around, but the small planet does rotate and each 'day' on Mercury lasts two of its 'years'. A certain level of astrophysics is required to get the best out of this book, but even looking up the Lagrange points on a site like Wikipedia will give helpful diagrams (there are diagrams in this book too) and astronomers from teens to adults will be fascinated. So many combined sciences are represented that we can see biologists, medics, engineers, chemists and mechanics will all be needed if Earth people are ever to call another planet home. If one section is outside your experience the next section may prove easier to understand. The omission which surprises me most is that of the Three-D Printer, by which an astronaut could insert a diagram for a tool or other item and the printer would build it layer by layer. We are also told nothing about intelligent glass and graphene.

As a lifelong science fiction fan I enjoyed catching up with some of the latest space exploration science in MANKIND BEYOND EARTH.

A brilliant and fascinating science lesson, loosely organized around space exploration
By Aaron C. Brown
I loved this book, but you may not. The author is a scientist of broad interest who tells you much more than you need to know to weigh alternative ideas for exploring outer space. For example, there are four ways to die from lack of oxygen and the book gives concise but thorough descriptions of the physiology of each one. Someday an astronaut may have a heart attack (ischemia) in space, or die from cytotoxic or stagnant hypoxia due to disease or genetic defect. But you'd think a book on space travel would concentrate on not having oxygen because space is a vacuum and other planets don't have oxygen atmospheres and maybe your spaceship or spacesuit sprang a leak or your oxygen recycling system broke down (hypoxic hypoxia, if you’re keeping track). The book has a similarly comprehensive account of how radiation affects tissues instead of describing only the most significant short-term dangers of cosmic rays outside the Van Allen belt.

It’s not just physiology that gets this treatment, the author will launch into general discussions of physics, chemistry, geology, scientific history or anything else that interests him with the least excuse. Ever wondered about how we got those International Geophysical and International Polar years? Or what the “Antarctic stare” is? Then this is the book for you. But if you’re looking for a focused discussion of the technology of space travel, you might get frustrated. Think of a late-night rambling discussion with a very smart guy who has thought a lot about exploration of outer space, who has a strong pedantic streak that is tolerable because he actually knows what he’s talking about and it’s interesting stuff.

Another feature of this book that will not be universally popular but that I liked, is the author has strong opinions and little patience for alternative views. Exploration means sending humans, and the only path worth considering is developing self-sustaining resources and capabilities like permanent low-Earth orbit facilities, a moon base, methodologies for extended living without resupply and mining, processing, reprocessing and disposal technologies to manage physical resources off-Earth. Space should be explored because that’s what humans do, and maybe a little for what we will learn, but it will not be valuable as a permanent place to live. You will learn why the author holds these opinions, but not much about why others may disagree (attractive ideas the author doesn’t wish to discuss are labeled “mind candy” and left at that).

The writing style is clear and vigorous, with a distinctive voice. My only gripe is the author is overfond of silly acronyms and tables that could use better design and any point at all. This is a book that will teach you a lot about a lot of things, and will be a pleasure to read for those who like to learn without worrying about whether there is any use to the learning.

An excellent mix of topics
By LewisC
I am a huge reader of science texts. I've read all the popular books and I like to delve into the less well known. I've honestly never heard of Professor Piantadosi nor have I read his work before.

The author looks at the history of space exploration and the barriers facing us in the future. As he says, space travel is not just about technology, it also about biology. He makes the point more than once that it is also about finances and politics. He starts off showing the passion of the people who made it to the moon and explains the difficulties they faced.

As we go through the book, he explains the importance of sustenance, waste removal, air for breathing, propulsion, distances, the effects of radiation on physiology and technology and so much more. Who will be the people exploring, what will they explore and how will they do it.

Some people may not like his style of writing. Like many scientific texts, it's written in a mostly informal essay style. While everything he says is related, he tends to jump around a bit. In the space of just a few pages, he explains the measurements we'll use in space (not just KM and light-year but AU and parsec), biomedicine, stress and the effects of radiation. Stuck in there is a great discussion of the people who live above 12,000 feet and how they have adapted to that life.

I say same people may not like it, but I found the entire thing to be fascinating. I've never seen some of the concepts explained as well as the author does it. There are a lot of topics I have never seen addressed for the layman.

This book is sort of like National Geographic for the Space Explorer. Maybe even a little popular mechanics thrown in for good measure. I really enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone who likes general space science. Give it a few chapters to decide whether nor not to finish. If you can make it to chapter 3, you'll have a good feel for his writing. I found it to be a bit quirky but, in the end, a great way to approach so many topics. Space travel really is complicated, more so than many people believe.

This book like all the Sean Bennett books is very poorly written
By Kyle K.
This book like all the Sean Bennett books is very poorly written. The book often contradicts itself. Review questions are not also based on material from the current edition as the industry has changed but the the book uses the same questions from previous editions of the book. even when the subject asked is not discussed in most recent edition. there are typos and other issues key terms in the chapters don't have a definition in the glossary the list goes on. Schools should not use Sean Bennett books there are better books out there however we are stuck with this one.

Errors not fixed from 5th edition
By atliia
This book is basically 5th edition with new pictures. It even has all of the same technical errors. In many circumstances the end of chapter review questions directly contradict the chapter text.

Screwed by The Text book maker and Amazon!
By Matthew G. Zoelle
I have this text book for school. I had to buy it from the school because the Amazon ISBN # for it did not match the schools listing of the #. So.... I spent more to get the dumb book, so when I look to get the Kindle version of the book they want more then the price of the hard copy book, and because I didn't buy it from Amazon I cannot buy it at the match book price. Guess I will not be buying the kindle version at all! I refuse to pay full price or rent at an astronomical price I book I already have. I'll be placing this same review in the Med truck text book that goes with this. I feel like I got screwed by the text book company and by Amazon.

Illuminating Disease: An Introduction to Green Fluorescent Proteins, by Marc Zimmer

Green fluorescent proteins have been floating in the ocean for more than 160 million years, but it took a curious scientist, fascinated by pinpricks of green light, to begin unlocking their potential. Now these jellyfish proteins have become one of the most important tools available to researchers in modern medicine and biology. By using them to illuminate other proteins that were previously invisible even under a microscope, scientists are now able to observe facets of disease that would have otherwise gone undetected. Green fluorescent proteins are used in over three million experiments a year and have proved invaluable for tasks such as tracking HIV, breeding bird flu-resistant chickens, and confirming the existence of cancerous stem cells.

In Illuminating Disease, Marc Zimmer introduces us to these revolutionary proteins, acquainting readers both with the researchers responsible for the proteins' discovery as well as their wide utility. The book details the history of genetically modified fluorescent parasites and viruses, which provide scientists with lifesaving information about the spread of diseases. Green fluorescent proteins allow scientists and doctors to understand diseases better by quite literally illuminating various microscopic interactions occurring in living cells that otherwise would have gone unseen.

The book is richly illustrated, showing the visually striking uses of green fluorescent proteins, and many of these scans have won awards in biological imaging competitions. An ideal introduction for students and advanced researchers alike, Illuminating Disease is an accessible yet deeply probing investigation into one of the most important developments in medical research of the last several decades.

Review

"When the Nobel Prize in chemistry was awarded for the discovery of green fluorescent protein (GFP) in 2008, the Nobel Committee called GFP a guiding star for biochemistry enabling processes that were previously invisible, such as cancer cells spreading, to be strikingly visible. Marc Zimmer, has written a "glowing account" of how GFP and its red, blue, yellow and orange cousins have revolutionized bio-medical research and enabled every major disease, both cause and effect, to "light-up" in the laboratory for researchers to visualize, understand and eventually conquer them. This exciting and landmark book on the wonderful story of GFP is written with great clarity, warmth and for everyone." --Dr. Robert M. Hoffman, President, Anticancer, Inc.

"I am tempted to say that this book is to GFP what "the double helix" is to DNA. Zimmer's pleasant and captivating account features a whole range of scientific problems, framed with personal stories and anecdotes. Zimmer manages to tell stories across many fields of disease (cancer, heart, brain, infections) that are not usually put together into one volume and thus provides a rare unifying read across biology. The nicely illustrated book clearly is a must-read for all students of biology." --Friedrich Frischnecht, Department of Parasitology, University of Heidelberg Medical School

"For many years, GFP attracted keen attention of scientists because of its unique biochemistry and practical usefulness, and simply due to its aesthetic beauty. Dr. Zimmer describes a lot of facts of medicine and basic biology, but at the same time does not forget to explain all basics to non-scientist readers, often suggesting surprising and illustrative parallels with everyday life. The book is full of stories of people who made key discoveries and technical breakthroughs in the field, and it shows an exciting flow of appearance and implementation of scientific ideas." --Sergey Lukyanov, Shemyakin and Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry

"'Illuminating Disease' achieves a difficult synthesis between discussing various diseases that are rarely mentioned within a single book and the molecular biology of fluorescent proteins without losing accessibility for a generalist reader. It is this mix that makes 'Illuminating Disease' stand out. Zimmer's account will provide students with an access point to the history and application of fluorescent proteins. There really is something for everyone here: from the interested lay-scientist through to the undergraduate student to those researchers that take GFP for granted in their daily research. And it is with this appreciation that the current book will serve the scientific community well." --Bioessays

"The book is well written, and the discussion is sufficiently detailed to be useful but not so complex as to overwhelm readers with minutiae. This is an informative read for those in the health science disciplines. Highly recommended." --Choice

Zimmer Shines a Biofluorescent Flashlight On Things You Never Could Have Imagined.
By En-light-ened Reader
This is a book for the scientist and the layman alike! As a premedical college student who actually has next to zero scientific background, this was truly an intriguing read. Zimmer bridges audiences of the humanities and the sciences. His writing is clever, dry and humorously understated. His narratives capture attention with romantic images of foreign intrigue and action, and captivate a wide audience with the dubious juxtaposition of international enterprise and the misunderstood world of science. This reader can guarantee you will never look at the exciting fields of medicine and genetic engineering the same way again- or for that matter, global disease and epidemic.

You'll gain new insight into under-prioritized and neglected diseases, from Malaria to Chagas, that afflict hundreds of millions every year, as well as the social, ethical and geo-political issues that surround each disease. Perhaps you may acquire an appreciation for the privilege in your own life- maybe you'll be galvanized by this impetus to help the rest of the world. You'll learn the fascinating history of each disease, from the plights of ancient times to the tribulations of those individuals who have originated our current methods of retaliation. And, of course, you'll discover how scientists at the very forefront of technology have harnessed the power of the light-emitting tools nature itself has provided them to combat the greatest plagues of its own creation.

You may be horrified by the torment of millions, but stimulated by the proverbial "light at the end of the tunnel" that proteins like GFP offer. Great! Become inspired by what nature and science have to offer us, in application to our own lives. Be dazzled, be beguiled, be amazed with what Zimmer has to offer in Illuminating Disease: because chances are, it's something you've never heard of before. Become enlightened, as yours truly has. ~WD

A Great Read for Everyone
By Brian Bahena
Marc Zimmer has successfully written a book aimed to both the scientific and casual reader. A straightforward GFP guide, which begins with the story of Osamu Shimomura, a scientist from Japan who was one of the first to research and attempt to understand GFP, and continues through current scientists and their research using GFP. The reader is kept hooked by the storytelling that follows along with the science behind GFP and the diseases discussed in the book. Do not be fooled by the title and think you will only read detailed science material about certain diseases and GFP. This book will also provide you with history/short biographies of the scientists who used GFP to better understand diseases. Zimmer writes with much simplicity and clarity. Even with its simple language no detail is left out. The introduction itself lays down a detailed history of the GFP that provides necessary context to understand the complexity and importance of GFP.

"Illuminating Disease: An introduction to Green Fluorescent Proteins" is just that an intro meant to inform readers of the great tool that GFP is while passing along Zimmer's enthusiasm and love for the subject matter in a short 240 pages of text. A great read for the high school student with a passion for science, for the college student pursuing a science degree, or for the casual reader just looking for a fun read and wanting to learn something new.

Glowing Reviews
By All systems glow
This book is very interesting and engaging. It gives new perspective on diseases and gives nice background and information on the research of diseases that takes place. Filled with funny little quips it remains humorous but informative. Zimmer narrates it in a very story-like way at some points, humanizing the scientists and giving insight on the actual process they experienced. It is definitely worth a read!

From School Library Journal
K-Gr 2—Lerner adds to this long-running, well-received series about transformation (previous titles have tackled animal and plant life cycles, food, and science). Though concise and comprehensible, the books still convey the essence of how these things come to be. Each spread features only a few sentences and serviceable photos. The small trim size, vocabulary words in bold, colorful and clean design, and spare but well-presented index and table of contents make this an ideal first step for nonfiction newbies. In choice of subject matter, too, this one sets itself apart from the usual fare for this audience. Strong offerings.

Kirkus (STARRED review)
"Churchwell... has written an excellent book... she’s earned the right to play on [Fitzgerald's] court. Prodigious research and fierce affection illumine every remarkable page.”

The autumn of 1922 found F. Scott Fitzgerald at the height of his fame, days from turning twenty-six years old, and returning to New York for the publication of his fourth book, Tales of the Jazz Age. A spokesman for America’s carefree younger generation, Fitzgerald found a home in the glamorous and reckless streets of New York. Here, in the final incredible months of 1922, Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald drank and quarreled and partied amid financial scandals, literary milestones, car crashes, and celebrity disgraces.

Yet the Fitzgeralds’ triumphant return to New York coincided with another event: the discovery of a brutal double murder in nearby New Jersey, a crime made all the more horrible by the farce of a police investigation—which failed to accomplish anything beyond generating enormous publicity for the newfound celebrity participants. Proclaimed the “crime of the decade” even as its proceedings dragged on for years, the Mills-Hall murder has been wholly forgotten today. But the enormous impact of this bizarre crime can still be felt in The Great Gatsby, a novel Fitzgerald began planning that autumn of 1922 and whose plot he ultimately set within that fateful year.

Careless People is a unique literary investigation: a gripping double narrative that combines a forensic search for clues to an unsolved crime and a quest for the roots of America’s best loved novel. Overturning much of the received wisdom of the period, Careless People blends biography and history with lost newspaper accounts, letters, and newly discovered archival materials. With great wit and insight, acclaimed scholar of American literature Sarah Churchwell reconstructs the events of that pivotal autumn, revealing in the process new ways of thinking about Fitzgerald’s masterpiece.

Interweaving the biographical story of the Fitzgeralds with the unfolding investigation into the murder of Hall and Mills, Careless People is a thrilling combination of literary history and murder mystery, a mesmerizing journey into the dark heart of Jazz Age America.

Review
The Wall Street Journal:
"Careless People blends biography, scholarship and literary journalism to generate a narrative that is almost novelistic in its urgency….Ms. Churchwell is committed not only to digging up long-forgotten historical nuggets but also to telling a well-crafted story....The finest achievement of Careless People may be to return The Great Gatsby to its moment. Time, place and the material world necessarily feed the imagination, and Ms. Churchwell presents a wealth of historical material that ought to inform any reading of Fitzgerald's great novel as a product of its era.”

USA Today:
“[A] compelling biography….The book is stuffed with wonderful and quirky cultural nuggets….Above all, Churchwell does a fantastic job of conjuring the magic of the Jazz Age, as well as its more lurid side. Regardless of how much of Fitzgerald's great novel was the result of fate, coincidence or pure imagination, it is fascinating to read about the era that shaped him, and to see how brilliantly he captured the happenings of his time.”

The Washington Post:
“[A] rewarding work, a history of 1922 as it was lived by the Fitzgeralds and their circle, as well as by the fictitious cast of The Great Gatsby. Like the jazz that defined the era, the book tells its story through digression and repetition, building up a pattern of internal references and refrains."

American Prospect:
“[T]he liveliest contribution to Fitzgeraldiana to come my way in years... [Churchwell’s] delight in everything she's dug up renews the novel's enchantments even for the Gatsby-wearied likes of me... a vivid and often witty account of all the zany, sad, ridiculous things that Scott, Zelda and their fellow Jazz Age glitterati got up to during the boozy summer and autumn of 1922... impressively researched.”

Entertainment Weekly:
“If you put all the books about F. Scott Fitzgerald in a stack, the resulting tower would be—apologies for the scientific jargon—really, really tall. In fact, it would almost certainly fall over. So it takes a bold writer to try tossing another one on the pile—and here comes one now! Sarah Churchwell’s Careless People concerns the writing of The Great Gatsby and the cultural and societal forces that inspired its superdrunk author. The book’s an unusual mix of criticism, biography, and true crime, all of it bound together by Churchwell’s lyrical prose and, frankly, the sheer force of her will. Not everything is new here (how could it be?), but it's an evocative read. It belongs on the tower, even if somebody else’s book has to come off. A-”

Newsday:
“Sarah Churchwell’s zesty cocktail of history, biography and literary criticism (with a dash of philosophical musing) so vividly captures the disordered existence of F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald during the 18-month sojourn on Long Island that inspired his greatest novel, many readers will close her book astonished that Scott managed to write The Great Gatsby at all....She does a brilliant job of re-creating ‘the world that prompted F. Scott Fitzgerald to write The Great Gatsby,'….Insights such as this make Careless People a book that anyone who cares about The Great Gatsby will want to read.”

The Chronicle of Higher Education:
“Churchwell introduces real-life equivalents of Fitzgerald’s characters, and she follows the stories in their morning papers. The results are often as glamorous, lurid, depressing, and fun to read as one would imagine… [Careless People] brings 1920s New York City vividly to life.”

Seattle Times:
“A thoughtful book that’ll be catnip to all Gatsby lovers….we’re given fascinating glimpses of social history.”

Minneapolis Star Tribune:
“Sarah Churchwell, in this utterly pleasing and thorough ‘biography of a book,’ brings the two views together in a worthwhile effort at achieving whole sight…. Re-read The Great Gatsby, read Careless People and, if you still have any lingering doubts, go see ‘The Wolf of Wall Street.’”

Boston Globe:
“The latest to fall under its spell is the scholar Sarah Churchwell, whose own seductive style borrows liberally from the novel….Grounded in archival evidence, but also richly speculative, her book is delightful reading for lovers of the novel and a provocative introduction for everyone else....[an] often fascinating reconstruction….Churchwell’s narrative has three principal strands: an account of the murder investigation, biographical information about Scott and Zelda, and a smart critical reading of the novel itself.”

Bookpage:
“Fascinating….Churchwell has produced an intriguing glimpse into how his mind worked, as he mined the Jazz Age innovations that still shape our world.”

The Daily Beast:
“Sarah Churchwell proves herself a master mixologist combining meticulously researched historical detail, equally tantalizing biographical tidbits and a subtle reading of Gatsby—the resulting cocktail is an intoxicating biography of a novel.”

The Millions:
“Sarah Churchwell has done something almost unimaginable: She has discovered something new and she has written something fresh and revealing about the most chewed-over piece of fiction in the American canon….Churchwell’s book is handsomely illustrated and her research into the existing source material is prodigious….A literary journalist and author of The Many Lives of Marilyn Monroe, Churchwell even unearthed a few morsels than no Fitzgerald scholars were aware of—most notably a letter by Fitzgerald about his intentions in Gatsby that was quoted in a lost review of the novel by Burton Rascoe. Churchwell, clearly thrilled by her spadework, calls Fitzgerald’s letter ‘a tiny, heart-stopping treasure….’ Careless People is a delightful blaze of a book….One of the chief virtues of Careless People is the way it leads the reader back to its source material.”

Kirkus Reviews (starred):
"Churchwell... has written an excellent book... she even manages to find fresh facts that escaped previous scholars... At times, Churchwell attempts Fitzgerald’s lyrical style—one chapter-ending sentence alludes to “the vagrant dead as they scatter across our tattered Eden”—she’s earned the right to play on his court. Prodigious research and fierce affection illumine every remarkable page.”

Publishers Weekly:
“[Sarah Churchwell] evokes the Jazz Age in all its ephemeral glamour and recklessness in her latest book….She excels at providing rich period details….the book highlights how accurately Fitzgerald intuited what was to come: the damage being done to American society by focusing on wealth; the way mass media would give rise to a celebrity culture.”

The London Review of Books:
“Churchwell brings… a lively curiosity, a gift for making connections, and an infectious passion for Fitzgerald and his greatest novel…. A suggestive, almost musical evocation of the spirit of the time.”

The New Statesman:
“The first readers of The Great Gatsby thought it was all about themselves, a book of the moment. Today, we tend to admire its enduring mythology of aspiration and undoing. Churchwell brilliantly brings these two perspectives together as she holds in counterpoint the sprawling stuff of Fitzgerald’s daily life and the gleamingly taut prose poem that emerged from it… Fitzgerald offered the year 1922 as the chief exhibit when he tried to explain the meaning of the jazz age. It is an exhibit worth looking at very carefully. Careless People does so with a mixture of patience and panache and it would take a long time to get bored of that particular cocktail.”

Sunday Telegraph:
“The wonder of Careless People ... is that it rewinds the years and allows the reader to appreciate again just how well Fitzgerald reflected his times.”

The Observer:
"A literary spree, bursting with recherché detail, high spirits and the desperate frisson of the jazz age."

Literary Review:
"A treasury of new material. Churchwell adds considerably to our understanding of the early 1920s, and how life for Fitzgerald played into the development of his art."

Corduroy Books:
“Not a second is wasted in this 350 or so page-turner. Careless People was fascinating. . . .It’s utterly smashing.”

Book Reporter:
“The Great Gatsby, like all great cultural highpoints, evolved, and Churchwell manages to infuse them all, boring and not, with an energy and drama that turns the book into a page-turner. . . . We feel so close to the action that we almost forget we are reading a history and not a daily diary account of the goings-on. Churchwell takes what could have been a treasure for literary theorists and turns it into a potboiler that could make great beach reading (or ski resort fireplace reading, I guess, given the season). Careless People is a highly recommended read for all. A thriller that combines history and fantasy is a rare and beautiful thing, and this book is just that.”

Careless People
By S Riaz
"The Great Gatsby" was first published in 1925, but Fitzgerald set the novel in 1922, when he and Zelda returned to New York. Fitzgerald was planning his new novel and he wanted to do something different - it would take him two years to finish Gatsby and, in a way, this is a biography of a novel. For, in this book, the author cleverly takes us through the time that Scott and Zelda spent in New York - the events that influenced him and the eighteen months he spent in Great Neck, just outside the city.

1922 was a remarkable year, which began with the publication of "Ulysses" and ended with "The Waste Land". This book seeks the origins of Gatsby, reconstructs the Jazz Age, and shows how Fitzgerald reflected the stories around him. The major news story at that time was that of the murder of Eleanor Mills, a married woman, and her lover Edward Hall; who were shot through the head near an abandoned farmhouse, their love letters scattered around the corpses. The murder of the adulterous couple held America spellbound and was in the newspapers for virtually the entire time that Fitzgerald was in New York.

When Scott and Zelda decided to look for a house in Great Neck, it was a former fishing village that was becoming popular with the rich and famous - "the Hollywood of the East" and which he re-named 'West Egg' in his novel. His time there is exhausting to even read about, with a backdrop of financial swindles, scandals and fads, car accidents, bootleggers, speakeasies, endless parties, bad behaviour and epic drinking binges. Throughout "Careless People", Sarah Churchwell ties everything together into how it relates to The Great Gatsby, with the chapters of her book corresponding to the chapters of the novel. As the murder trial which fascinated the country descended into debacle, the parties blended into one another - of one party, Zelda wrote, "nobody knew whose party it was. It had been going on for weeks..."

Eventually, the Fitzgerald's decided to leave for Europe, so Scott could work in peace. That, anyway, was the plan. "I've been unhappy but my work hasn't suffered from it," he wrote to his publisher when the novel was finished. Indeed, it hadn't suffered, far from it. Obviously, this book has been released now to tie in with the new film version. Whether you are coming to Gatsby through watching the film or have long been a lover of the novel, you will find this book about how and when Gatsby was written fascinating. Equally interesting, is the story of the murder investigation and trial, which the author follows throughout. Overall, this is a fascinating account of a bygone era and the story behind a great work of literature.

Murderous
By Melanie Gilbert
The challenge to being F. Scott Fitzgerald's biographer is originality of material. What hasn't already been written about a man who died over 70 years ago? On Amazon, there are over 300 biographies listed.

Author Sarah Churchwell's book parallels the genius behind the "The Great Gatsby" to that of a true crime: a brutal double murder that took place in New Jersey at the same time Fitzgerald decamped to Great Neck, New York, to begin work on his third novel.

It's an interesting angle, but ultimately a thin one that can't sustain the 350-pages that comprise this book. While I agree with her premise that the Mills-Hall murders influenced Fitzergald's Gatsby story and characters, the relentless side-by-side construction is too much and bogs down Churchwell's otherwise excellent narrative.

Fitzgerald is famous for mining many real sources and personalities for his works including his wife and an early girlfriend whom scholars believe inspired his Daisy Buchanan character in Gatsby. Weaving in the murder as yet one more inspiration would have been enough, but to hinge her entire work on that singular murderous event and subsequent investigation, news coverage and trial is tiresome.

Churchwell's exhaustive research uncovers previously unknown direct links between other events in Fitzgerald's life and Gatsby's development - she's done her homework - but the 1922 murder story ends up smothering her main literary investigation and earns this work 3 stars.

A great biography on one of the century's greatest novels.
By Tonia M. Crum
A must for any fan of The Great Gatsby or Fitzgerald. A mix of genres including biography, history and literary criticism. I thought I knew just about everything concerning Fitzgerald and the writing of The Great Gatsby, this book proved me wrong. The author gives a detailed account of the year that The Great Gatsby is set along with a parallel story of a double murder case ala Devil in the White City. The author points out so many possible inspirations for characters and plot points, and while we may never know for sure if they influenced Fitzgerald it is irresistible to make the leap. Buy this book, the cover alone is worth the price of admission!

About the Author

Tom Kenny, FHRS, CCDS

Tom Kenny has always been an educator. From his start as a Critical Care Educator for the North Broward Hospital District in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to serving as Director of Education at PrepMD in Braintree, Massachusetts, Tom has focused on providing real-world, practical education for clinicians. Although he has served on faculty at Broward Community College and lectures for the Heart Rhythm Society and the Food and Drug Administration, Tom has always believed that it was imperative to educate the “front lines” of healthcare, the men and women clinicians across the country who treat patients day in and day out. He has served at Intermedics and St. Jude Medical in corporate medical device education, where he sought to make highly complicated therapies easily understood. In his tenure at both companies, he expanded training programs and developed educational materials. Finding that there was little in the way of pacemaker training for educated clinicians who just did not happen to know pacing, Tom brought his style of training to the classroom and now to book form. Tom is a native New Yorker who currently divides his time between Massachusetts and Texas. He has five children.

I haven't gotten all the way through this book yet but it is great. It is so well written and easy to understand, I'm in the healthcare field and this is really helpful when taking care of my patients and I believe it is a great intro into the world of devices. My only complaint is I wish all the books weren't a 4 part series, the cost adds up! It would be beneficial if it included everything including ICDs, paced EGMs and CRT-D therapy. I like how the book helps explain the concepts by repeating the sentences it different formats, it really helps you understand and helps things stick. It isn't very "textbook-y" and boring and difficult to read, the content is pretty easy to grasp, probably due to what I said earlier. It is not a book of super advanced concepts, but I think it is a great place to start and provides a lot of helpful information. I already purchased the ICD book and will likely purchase/rent the others.

Clear and understandable presentation of a complex subject!

Complex material in an extremely readable format. Well done. While I come from a computer background, I am not a medical practitioner at all and I found this book very helpful in understanding not only my husband's pacemaker but also the bigger picture of electrical conduction issues in the human heart.
