About the Author
Dr. Braja Das is Dean Emeritus of the College of Engineering and Computer Science at California State University, Sacramento. He received his M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Iowa and his Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin. He is the author of a number of geotechnical engineering texts and reference books and more than 250 technical papers in the area of geotechnical engineering. His primary areas of research include shallow foundations, earth anchors, and geosynthetics. Dr. Das is a Fellow and Life Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Life Member of the American Society for Engineering Education, and an Emeritus Member of the Chemical and Mechanical Stabilization Committee of the Transportation Research Board of the National Research Council (Washington D.C.). He has received numerous awards for teaching excellence, including the AMOCO Foundation Award, the AT&T Award for Teaching Excellence from the American Society for Engineering Education, the Ralph Teetor Award from the Society of Automotive Engineers, and the Distinguished Achievement Award for Teaching Excellence from the University of Texas at El Paso.

This book would never be my first choice.

I am using this book currently for my undergraduate foundation design course. There are a lot of things that this book does well. Firstly it has a lot of special cases: foundations with inclined or eccentric loading, foundations on a slope, foundations near a slope, foundations with bedrock close to the surface, foundations on layered clay, etc. It has A LOT of equations and different methods that have been empirically derived by researchers in the field.
The problem with this book:
1. There is not enough explanation in this book. The book is set up with so many formulas that basically I found myself literally "plug and chugging", you literally go to the section that you need and all the formulas you will use will be there or are used in the example problems and thus you know exactly what you need to use. On top of that some of the sections give you numbered steps of what to do. It's very easy and very straightforward but leaves you asking, "what am I doing? why am I doing this? How does any of this really make sense?". You will find yourself knowing how to do a lot of these problems, but not really fully understanding what exactly is going on. The book is more about listing equations, showing useless mathematical derivations, and teaching how to solve foundation problems. There is not much effort put into teaching the material and subject-matter.
2. LOADS OF MISTAKES. This book is full of mistakes from cover to cover. Sometimes the equations in the text and the equations in the example problems don't exactly match and its an obvious typo. Today I was looking over a problem that had a Pile depth of 10 feet but they used 11 feet in the calculation. You will be amazed at the number of mistakes you will find in this book that will make you feel uneasy.
I was told by my previous professor for soil mechanics (who unfortunately couldn't teach the class this semester) that she chose this book because it had a lot of different scenarios in it. Apparently they use Coduto's book for advanced foundation design. I would recommend this book if you are interested primarily in solving different, special-case scenarios, since I don't think most foundation books will cover as many specific topics.

The best book of Foundations

this book is really great and it helps a lot when doing all high grades in this fields. I liked the previous edition but I also want to be updated so I just bought this wonderful book

Great book for learning foundation design as you get to ...

Great book for learning foundation design as you get to discover all of the errors in the text and the problem solutions. Our graduate level students kept a second set of solutions for their Teaching Assistant office hours. The author did a great job of browsing the internet for multiple explanations although it would have been nice if he had spent a little time researching why to use one approach over another. Knowing when to use a solution procedure is often better than knowing that there are multiple ways to solve a similar problem. It was especially problematic when he did not note the input units, like the use of degrees or radians, in theories presented one immediately after the other that used different input units.
Once you get past the errors in the book, it is a fairly good tool to have. I use it, and previous versions, in my practice and teaching and have since the Second Edition.
