About the Author
Donald R. Askeland joined the University of Missouri-Rolla (now the Missouri University of Science and Technology) in 1970 after obtaining his doctorate in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Michigan. His primary interest has been in teaching, resulting in a variety of campus, university, and industry awards and the preparation of a materials engineering textbook. Dr. Askeland has also been active in research involving metals casting and metals joining, particularly in the production, treatment, and joining of cast irons, gating and fluidity of aluminum alloys, and optimization of casting processes. Additional work has concentrated on lost foam casting, permanent mold casting, and investment casting; much of this work has been interdisciplinary, providing data for creating computer models and validation of such models.

Wendelin Wright is an associate professor at Bucknell University with a joint appointment in the departments of Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering. She received her B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. (2003) in Materials Science and Engineering from Stanford University. Following graduation, she served a post-doctoral term at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the Manufacturing and Materials Engineering Division and then returned to Stanford as an Acting Assistant Professor in 2005. She joined the Santa Clara University faculty as a tenure-track assistant professor and assumed her position at Bucknell in the fall of 2010. Professor Wright's research interests focus on the mechanical behavior of materials, particularly of metallic glasses. She is the recipient of the 2003 Walter J. Gores Award for Excellence in Teaching, which is Stanford University's highest teaching honor, a 2005 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, and a 2010 National Science Foundation CAREER Award. Professor Wright is a licensed professional engineer in metallurgy in California.

About the Author
Leela Hope is a writer with over 22 years of experience in writing endearing children's fiction. Her lively characters have entranced and captivated her audience, and she has taken great joy in writing the three series of books, each beautifully illustrated with love and care. Her stories concentrate on the adventures of floppy eared bunnies and wide-eyed children learning lessons in life, before returning home wiser and eager for sleep. Leela hope writes her stories to entertain the very young, but also to educate. Her vision is always of a parent sitting on a child's bed, reciting the stories each night, while the young one drifts off to sleep, lulled into a dream world full of fun and adventure. From her very earliest years of childhood, Leela made up stories in her head, telling them to her younger brother and sister. The stories flowed easily from her mind, and it wasn't long before she realized she had a gift for writing. By the age of 14, she had already written a small book of short stories for her own entertainment, and by the age of 22, she had published her first full-fledged children's fiction in several magazines. Leela hope was destined to be an author and she knew exactly what genre of fiction she wanted to dedicate her life too. Born in San Diego, California, and still residing in the area, Leela studied English Literature at Berkeley, earning a degree in 1989. Her writing covers a span of several genres, but she always returns to her first love, children's fiction. Derek the Dragon and his friend Devin, the dormouse go flying one day. Unfortunately they scare some people in the village who run to Princess Dayna for assistance. Her parents are not in the castle but she is not afraid of the dragon and the dormouse!

The drawings in this book are excellent and all are vibrant colors. Lots of red as the dragon appears on nearly every page. I liked the story as the Princess tells everyone that this dragon is not to be feared as he is a nice dragon. It also emphasizes the fact that one should get to know someone before they get upset. And, she is glad that she took the time to know both of them as they are now her friends. Nice lesson in this one....

Most highly recommended. The author says this book is written for ages 2 -6 and the bright colors will certainly hold their attention.

`He is a friendly dragon, Who plays games and tells jokes.'

San Diego, California Author Leela Hope studied English Literature at Berkeley, earning a degree in 1989. Her writing covers a span of several genres, but she always returns to her first love, children's fiction. And it is there that her star shines brightest. Always finding something unique on which to base her stories, she makes each tale a learning experience for children as well as offering some pointers for parenting!

Leela's familiar red dragon Derek flies around the countryside with his pal Devin the dormouse and the villagers are concerned. They consult Princess Dayna, sitting in on the throne for her vacationing folks. Princess bravely takes the situation in her own hands, and goes outside and sees Derek looking very huge in the sky above. She calls to Derek to get down sating she doesn't know who he is, but Devin stands up for his huge friend saying how nice he is. The Princess sees Derek is no threat and invites hi into the castle - an act that terrifies the villagers. The Princess explains that Derek is not man or cruel but friendly and Derek in turn has a conversation with the villagers. And that settles the situation - Princess Dayna, Derek and Devin become the best of friends because Dayna took the time to get to know the dragon.

Not only is the story colorful and entertaining but also carries a solid bit of information about friends and how to be open to new friends even though they are different than you. Another little winner from Leela Hope. Grady Harp, May 15

When you read this book you will find out what happened between, Derek, Devin, the princess and the people.

Parents/teachers will certainly enjoy reading this book to their children. The children will enjoy hearing about a friendly dragon and his exploits. The illustrations by Leela Hope are bright and beautiful, depicting the adventures of Derek, Devin and Dayna. One of the best parts of this book is that it is told in rhyme. Rhyme verse is one of the most pleasant to read and to hear. There is a lesson learned in this book, and this is important for all children. What a great book!

I bought multiple copies of this book for Christmas presents and could not be more pleased with the quality! The book is engaging and the illustrations are beautiful. My niece loves animals and I know she will adore this sweet book. I can't wait to gift this to her and other kids in my life!

Great story for range of ages

I absolutely adore this book! The story is great for a range of ages. We have given several copies as gifts for nieces and nephews. This is also already on the nursery bookshelf for our own child soon to arrive. The illustrations are beautiful and the print is very high quality. Absolutely recommended!

About the Author
Bernhard O. Palsson is the Galletti Professor of Bioengineering and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego. For almost 30 years, his research has focused on the development of large-scale models of biological functions and their use to solve basic and applied problems in the life sciences. He has authored three previous textbooks.

About the Author
Matt Doeden was born in southern Minnesota and lived parts of his childhood in Golden Valley, Minnesota, and Madison, Minnesota. He studied journalism at Mankato State University, where he worked at the college newspaper for three years. In his senior year, he served as the paper's Sports Editor, which put him in charge of the entire sports section, the sports writers, and the photographers. He covered mostly college sports, but also the Minnesota Vikings, who held training camp at MSU. His work allowed him to meet and interview people like Dennis Green, Cris Carter, Robert Smith, and more. Matt went on to work as a sports writer for the Mankato paper, and then he got a job as an editor with a small children's publisher called Capstone Press, and in 2003 he decided to start his own business as a freelance writer and editor. Since then Matt has written and edited hundreds of books. Lots of them are on high-interest topics like cars, sports, and airplanes. He also writes and edits on geography, science, and even math.

Nick Woodman didn’t grow up dreaming that he’d take “the tech world by storm” with some magnificent invention. Living in the midst Silicon Valley would set even the most unimaginative boy dreaming of success, but not Nick. He’d much rather ride the ocean waves than the high-tech ones. It wasn’t a dream, but rather something he did from the time he was an eight-year-old boy. Nick did have a tech side and he wanted to head to the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) not for their programs, but for their waves. Black’s Beach just called out to him. USCD didn’t want Nick, but his persistence and an appeal won them over. Persistance was a quality that would serve him well.

Nick found out that economics wasn’t his thing, but Jill Scully, his future wife, was. One wife and a college degree later, he was soon off on the dot-com run and started a website to sell electronics later the FunBug game website. They looked good, but ultimately both were flops. It was the “end of the ‘dot-com’ boom” and it sure looked like Nick had to rethink what he could do career-wise. It was back to riding the waves ... in Australia and Indonesia. It would give him time to think, but while he was surfing, he “wanted to capture some of his greatest waves on camera.” Now just how could he surf and take pictures at the same time?

Well, the big idea was simple: “He attached a disposable camera to an old wrist strap from a surfboard.” Nick then attached it to his wrist. It was a hands-free approach, that actually worked! The simple fact that it worked wasn’t going to get him anywhere. Nick had to create a plan and of course he needed money. His earlier ventures tapped him out financially and he had to raise some cash. The business was going to be called Woodman Labs, but instead “it would be known by the name of its products: GoPro.” In this book you’ll learn about the evolution of the GoPro, how he got someone to manufacture it, his early sales, and many more interesting facts about how Nick Woodman “turned his tech vision into reality.”

This is the amazing biography of Nick Woodman, the GoPro inventor extraordinaire. The Big Book of Color is a extremely engaging and interactive children's book about the colors and shades of the rainbow. The cover is beautiful, bright, and attractive and immediately grabs your attention.

The book explains and explores the colors of the rainbow and how colors can affect you and the world around you. The book explains several different tools and items that you can use when learning about color. The color wheel was a neat way of explaining the different types of colors and then the author allows the reader to work with the different colors and encourages interaction throughout the book.

Everything in this book is so realistic and I loved how the author incorporated nature and animals throughout the books as examples of color.

My favorite part of the entire book was where the author added interesting facts throughout the book in order to encourage learning and initiate the curiosity of the reader. This was a fantastic children's book that was not only informative but FUN and engaging for the reader!!

Good Instructional Book About Color

I haven't seen many good art books for young children, so I was really excited to get The Big Book of Color in the mail. I've been using it to teach my own kids about color.

It's a simple book with simple lessons aimed at kids ages 5 and up. It starts by going over the color wheel and what primary, secondary, and tertiary colors are. It also discusses hue, value, and color schemes (like analogous and complementary). It's written in very simple, easy to understand language. It has an activities to reinforce the lessons.

The majority of the book is dedicated to going over individual colors, discussing facts about the color, and a simple how-to-draw tutorial for each one. I would have liked to see more activities and chances for kids to play with color. The book is good, but it would have been great with more hands-on opportunities.

Very fun!

The Big Book of Color is a beautifully-bound and cleverly illustrated journey beyond the basics of color theory. I loved the fun examples, which take young children well past “red with yellow makes orange,” and so forth. I was impressed to find the book is quite large — and over 120 pages — with vivid colors and examples filling each page to the margins. There are workbook-style activities included, although the high quality printing elevates the book so much, you may feel reticent to actually color on these beautiful, thick pages. Once I opened it, I had to read every page. After many years of designing at the professional level, I can strongly recommend The Big Book of Color as an excellent introduction into the wonderful world of colors.

About the Author
ROB SANDERS is a writer who teaches and a teacher who writes. A native of Springfield, Missouri, he has also lived in Texas, Alabama, and Tennessee. After earning degrees in elementary and religious education, Rob worked for fifteen years in children’s religious educational publishing as a writer, educational consultant, editor, editorial group manager, and product developer.

While the earth is busy orbiting the sun, BRIAN WON is usually stationary, enjoying space ice cream (Neapolitan) and writing and illustrating children’s books, such as Hooray for Hat! He lives in Southern California, where he comes in second place every night when his family races off to sleep.

First up is Outer Space Bedtime Race by Rob Sanders, illustrated by Brian Won. And this is published by Random House. This is a bedtime book, a race to bed (of course) in rhyming text with a visit to each of the plants along the way and my goodness does this not have the most beautifully designed art by Brian Won. This is the guy who brought us Hooray for Hat earlier this year. And it has so many different charming aliens, spacey pictures, and everything just kind of seems to glow off of the page. It's beautiful. And paired with the Ron's rhyming text that… I've just got to flat out say that there is one point where we talk about the creatures of Saturn going to bed in the buff, which is something that I think kids are not going to be able to forget. This is such a beautifully designed book and one that feels new for space books. It feels new for designing characters from from other planets in making them look unique and cute and adorable. So, really well-done! I love this book! Outer Space Bedtime Race. Check it out!

The gorgeous language of Rob Sanders' writing makes learning about the planets fun. It's always a plus when an author can mix facts with fun fiction and this book doesn't disappoint. Paired with whimsical illustrations, each planet gets its own clever description of how children in outer space prepare for bed. This book gets my little ones ready to be lulled into dreams of the cosmos while riding a shooting star all the way.

A Modern Day Parable...........

A Beautiful Tale of faceing fears and finding Love at the other side of them. This type of story is really needed in our fast paced culture of instant gratification, where hiding and ignoring wounds can be the bedrock where shame and doubt are planted deep in the soul of a child. This shame and doubt usually grows into deep wounds in our inner being as adults that hold us back and keep us in bondage. Not for Ellam..... This is a heart building book that belongs in the library of anyone who believes in the Power of healing and the Power of Love. Journey with Ellam as she learns to Trust and live Free to be who she was created to be.... you may also discover the beauty of who you were meant to be. This is not a kids only book.....although I highly recommend it be a part of any child's library. The story of Ellam teaches that there is beauty in who we are no matter what our struggles. The emphasis is on the good in the middle of a trial and the story shows that we can and will be used for Great and Wonderful things if we believe, face our fears by walking through them and have Faith enough to Believe beyond "cultural norms", of labeling others when what works is honoring them. I Love that the author wrote this book to help his daughter who struggles with a condtion called Trichotillomania, compulsive pulling out of hair. In his attempt to write Ellams story to help others, he not only writes about Ellams journey to face her fear and walk through it and be brave, but he models that in the writing of this book. The heart behind the story is evident and relevent for such a time as this. I also loved the drawings, simple, colorful, allowing the imagination and soul to soar. I look forward to giving this book as gifts to many children and a few adults. I can't wait to see what else this author has up his sleeve. I also hope it helps many with Trichotillomania. It's a heart felt tale that will change your view and stop you from judging others. We all need to be encouraged to come out of our caves and be who we really are and be willing to be used for good in the lives of others. A Brave and Couragous tale that teaches that beautiful things can grow from adversity and trials. Read it...you won't be sorry!!

A must read family book

I bought this book for my granddaughter thinking it would help her with feelings of embarrassment over her recent hair loss. Turns out, it helped me as well. I started out feeling embarrassed that my granddaughter was not perfect. I of course thought she was from the day she was born. What I learned is that I need to be proud of her just the way she is and that is perfect, of course. A little less hair does not change that fact. She and I both shared a wonderful moment together while reading this book. What a self esteem builder it has been for her as she reads the book, over and over, and can relate the young dragon in the book.

Wonderful resource!

This book offers something truly remarkable to families coping with trichotillomania: a paradigm of acceptance. My daughter fights the urges that wax and wane with her trichotillomania, but she fights with an understanding that trich does not define her--and it may even expand her opportunities to bring love and compassion to a hurting world. This book reinforces both of those truths in spades. I'll be recommending it to every kid who comes to our support group here in Nashville!
