About the Author
Leela Hope is a writer with over 22 years of experience in writing endearing children's fiction. Her lively characters have entranced and captivated her audience, and she has taken great joy in writing the three series of books, each beautifully illustrated with love and care. Her stories concentrate on the adventures of floppy eared bunnies and wide-eyed children learning lessons in life, before returning home wiser and eager for sleep. Leela hope writes her stories to entertain the very young, but also to educate. Her vision is always of a parent sitting on a child's bed, reciting the stories each night, while the young one drifts off to sleep, lulled into a dream world full of fun and adventure. From her very earliest years of childhood, Leela made up stories in her head, telling them to her younger brother and sister. The stories flowed easily from her mind, and it wasn't long before she realized she had a gift for writing. By the age of 14, she had already written a small book of short stories for her own entertainment, and by the age of 22, she had published her first full-fledged children's fiction in several magazines. Leela hope was destined to be an author and she knew exactly what genre of fiction she wanted to dedicate her life too. Born in San Diego, California, and still residing in the area, Leela studied English Literature at Berkeley, earning a degree in 1989. Her writing covers a span of several genres, but she always returns to her first love, children's fiction. She enjoys scuba diving and visiting wildlife parks, seeking new inspiration for cuddly characters for her stories. Leela hope lives in an urban area of San Diego and is presently at work on a new book.

Derek the Dragon and his friend Devin, the dormouse go flying one day. Unfortunately they scare some people in the village who run to Princess Dayna for assistance. Her parents are not in the castle but she is not afraid of the dragon and the dormouse!
The drawings in this book are excellent and all are vibrant colors. Lots of red as the dragon appears on nearly every page. I liked the story as the Princess tells everyone that this dragon is not to be feared as he is a nice dragon. It also emphasizes the fact that one should get to know someone before they get upset. And, she is glad that she took the time to know both of them as they are now her friends. Nice lesson in this one....
Most highly recommended. The author says this book is written for ages 2 -6 and the bright colors will certainly hold their attention.

`He is a friendly dragon, Who plays games and tells jokes.'

San Diego, California Author Leela Hope studied English Literature at Berkeley, earning a degree in 1989. Her writing covers a span of several genres, but she always returns to her first love, children's fiction. And it is there that her star shines brightest. Always finding something unique on which to base her stories, she makes each tale a learning experience for children as well as offering some pointers for parenting!
Leela's familiar red dragon Derek flies around the countryside with his pal Devin the dormouse and the villagers are concerned. They consult Princess Dayna, sitting in on the throne for her vacationing folks. Princess bravely takes the situation in her own hands, and goes outside and sees Derek looking very huge in the sky above. She calls to Derek to get down sating she doesn't know who he is, but Devin stands up for his huge friend saying how nice he is. The Princess sees Derek is no threat and invites hi into the castle - an act that terrifies the villagers. The Princess explains that Derek is not man or cruel but friendly and Derek in turn has a conversation with the villagers. And that settles the situation - Princess Dayna, Derek and Devin become the best of friends because Dayna took the time to get to know the dragon.
Not only is the story colorful and entertaining but also carries a solid bit of information about friends and how to be open to new friends even though they are different than you. Another little winner from Leela Hope. Grady Harp, May 15

The Flying Dragon

Are you ever afraid of someone you do not know? What do you do when you are afraid?
The author of this book, Leela Hope, has written a fun and entertaining book about Derek the Dragon, Devin the mouse, and Dayna the princess. Derek the dragon is a very big fella. He likes to fly in the sky with tiny Devin sitting on his back. As they flew over the countryside they frightened the people who looked up and saw this big dragon flying in the sky. Derek was a very peaceful dragon, and he would not hurt anyone. However, the people did not know this, they told the princess about Derek and asked her to do something about him. When you read this book you will find out what happened between, Derek, Devin, the princess and the people.
Parents/teachers will certainly enjoy reading this book to their children. The children will enjoy hearing about a friendly dragon and his exploits. The illustrations by Leela Hope are bright and beautiful, depicting the adventures of Derek, Devin and Dayna. One of the best parts of this book is that it is told in rhyme. Rhyme verse is one of the most pleasant to read and to hear. There is a lesson learned in this book, and this is important for all children. Note: a complimentary copy of this book was provided to read and review.
