About the Author
Scott M. Peters is Curator of Collections at the Michigan Historical Museum in Lansing and a lifelong Great Lakes boater. A frequent contributor to Michigan History Magazine, he has been collecting information on the state’s boat-building industry for the past 25 years.

Fantastic way to spend a few wonderful days in the Michigan summer sunshine! Peters knows his subject matter. I always fancied myself pretty well versed in Michigan automotive and marine history, but I am bush league compared to this guy. Even after this book I have to admit that he is still the boss. Great explanations of the ups and downs and travails of the boat building industry in the state of MI. We were, at one time, one of the hubs of the world recreational/pleasure boat industry. A lot of that had to do with our leadership in automotive and engine technology. World War I, according to Scott, was good for our boating firms. The Depression, obviously, weeded out quite a few of the smaller producers. World War II was an incredible shot in the arm for the industry. Peters also describes the transition from wood planking to molded plywood to aluminum and onto fiberglass. Names I recognized and have had experience with: Aero Craft, Chris Craft, Jesiek bros. in Holland, S2 and Tiara Yachts, also in Holland, MI. My wife's grandfather retired from Holland, MI, Chris Craft as a pattern maker. His woodworking skills were great. My mother in law spent a few summers @ the plant prepping boats for shipment. Excellent book. Well written and very informative.
