About the Author
Frank M White is Professor Emeritus of Mechanical and Ocean Engineering at the University of Rhode Island. He studied at Georgia Tech and M.I.T. In 1966 he helped found, at URI, the first department of ocean engineering in the country. Known primarily as a teacher and writer, he has received eight teaching awards and has written four textbooks on fluid mechanics and heat transfer. From 1979 to 1990 he was editor-in-chief of the ASME Journal of Fluids Engineering and then served from 1991 to 1997 as chairman of the ASME Board of Editors and of the Publications Committee. He is a Fellow of ASME and in 1991 received the ASME Fluids Engineering Award.

Decent Book

I used this book for my undergrad fluid mechanics class for civil engineering.
Overall, the book is a solid intro to fluid mechanics. The explanations are pretty clear, and the example problems are helpful and relevant. Here are some of the book's downsides:
- Many of the solutions at the end of the book are wrong... which is very frustrating since this is the 7th printing of this textbook.
- The book skips a lot of steps (ie Navier-Stokes equations section, which is frustrating for someone first learning the subject). This makes it tough for someone beginning the subject or if you have a weaker mathematics background.
- In general, this book assumes you have a strong math background (i.e. you can instantly recognize and solve diff. eqs, double/triple integrals)
- There aren't that many examples. The examples that White does go through are relatively basic compared to the problems at the end of the chapters. However, this can be fixed by searching for additional practice problems online.
Overall, this is a readable and interesting book, assuming you have a strong math background (ie first order diff eqns, linear algebra, some multivariable calculus).

It is a good text for fluid mechanics but a little common sense ...

It is a good text for fluid mechanics but a little common sense would go a long way to make it better. Good example problems but also poor direction with homework problems. Many assumptions are made but never stated to the student. If the instructor tells you ahead of time, then things will make sense. Without this type of insight many of the problems are very ambiguous.

Too hard for an undergrad !

I used this book for an undergrad fluid mechanics course. The book is well written, however I eventually gave up on trying to read and understand it. It seems is written by a really smart person and most of the time I found the material in the book to be over my head. A lot of my classmates thought the same thing too. I often thought that this textbook is more suited for graduate level students.
However the book keeps true to fluid mechanics and does not include a lot of unnecessary "filler" material that some textbooks do.
By filler material I mean stuff that is related to the subject but not necessary for the the understanding of the material.
