I got this for my son to work on over the summer to strengthen his skills for kindergarten after a year in transitional kindergarten. He enjoys the activities, but he does find a lot of them too easy and he breezes through them quickly. For him having some kindergarten already, he would have benefited from the next level more, but it is still a good workbook and good review.

Wizzil the horrible hag is bored stiff until her parrot not-so-sweetly suggests that she amuse herself by making somebody suffer, specifically the Frimps. Taking the bird's advice, she transmogrifies into a common housefly and zizzes over to Frimp Farm. Old DeWitt Frimp, who deplores flies, is armed with a flyswatter and misses the fly-witch by a hair. Wizzil vows revenge.

Now, at least no longer bored, she decides to turn herself into a glove and lie in wait for the unwitting DeWitt. Sure enough, he puts it on right away, considering himself a lucky man to have made such a discovery. With the glove on, he soon finds that he can hit everything but flies with his flyswatter. Worse yet, Fred and Florence Frimp begin to experience "unbearable itches in unexpected places." When meatballs begin to explode, DeWitt finally realizes that the rash of bad luck started with the glove, and he throws it in the river.

How could he have known that the glove would transform into the hideous Wizzil as soon as it hit the water? Or that Wizzil, unused to water, would start to sink? DeWitt, a good soul, jumps right in to rescue her, even though she is quite nasty. But what's this? Her nastiness washes downstream, and Wizzil is left a sweet old lady in his arms. "Needless to say, Wizzil and DeWitt fell completely in love, and wound up an old married couple who stayed together on the farm." And Wizzil was never bored stiff again. (Though the parrot found her new life with humans a bit humdrum.)

William Steig--New Yorker cartoonist and creator of numerous picture books, including the Caldecott Medalist Sylvester and the Magic Pebble --is up to his usual tricks in this quirky story. Made-up words like "zizzes," odd colloquial expressions, and goofy plot twists add up to not only unmitigated delight but a complete lack of condescension in his writing for young readers. Two masters of children's literature turn in an amiable, if not groundbreaking, performance in this madcap witch story. Bored, Wizzil the witch heeds her pet parrot's suggestion to "go make somebody suffer!" She transforms herself into a fly and relentlessly pesters an ornery old coot named DeWitt Frimp. Observing that DeWitt is a leftie, Wizzil returns the next day in the form of a left-handed work glove; when DeWitt puts the "happy harpy on his hand," his arm misbehaves. The moment of truth arrives when DeWitt hurls the glove into the river, whereupon Wizzil is revealedAand true love blooms. Steig, whose Made for Each Other took a clear-eyed look at sentiment, cuts the romantic sweetness with an ample squeeze of sour lemon. He toys with tongue-twisters and kid-pleasing insults (DeWitt is a "bald-headed fuddy-dud"; Wizzil's a "hateful hag"). Blake (Clown) composes spiky, energetic line-drawings of DeWitt, who flails clumsily at the offending fly, and Wizzil, who struggles and spits when she lands in the water. In the wryly happy ending, newt-brown and froggy-green watercolor hues give way to sunny shades of yellow and blue. Steig and Blake start with unrefined nastiness, then blindside their characters (and readers) with a comical but sincere look at love. Ages 4-8. (Aug.)

Kindergarten-Grade 4-Bored, Wizzil the witch is encouraged by her scheming parrot Beatrice to cause mischief down at the Frimp Farm. Old DeWitt Frimp has a fly fetish and swats the little buggers every chance he gets. That is, until Wizzil, who has coincidentally transformed herself into a fly, takes offense at a few of his near misses. In order to exact her revenge, she then becomes an appealing work glove that DeWitt happens to find. It bedevils the man's fly swatting and generally causes havoc around the farm. When DeWitt is finally driven to dispose of it in a nearby creek, the glove becomes a drowning old woman, whom he rescues. This act of kindness causes the witch to metamorphose from a "hateful hag" into a sweet old lady washed clean of her former "vicious nastiness." The true love that blossoms between this geriatric pair is brought to fruition with enough high jinks and humor so as not to repel unromantic youngsters. Blake's lively watercolor cartoons, filled with humorous detail, are a delightful companion to this ultimately good-natured tale of transformation and rebirth.

A marriage of two greats: Steig and Blake

I am so in love with William Steig's books that I was a little bit startled to see that Quentin Blake had illustrated "Wizzil"--but since I adore Blake also, that was only a momentary setback. "Wizzil" is an unusual witch tale in that the witch ends up not only changing for the better, but having a pretty darned good life for herself once someone takes a moment to show her some kindness.
Steig pulls out all the stops here--don't you love the character names? Let's see, there's Wizzil the witch, DeWitt Frimp, Florence and Fred Frimp (try saying THAT three times fast!), and of course, a parrot named Beatrice. It's a happy combination of offbeat, cranky text and the loosey-goosey pen-and-ink illustrations of the inimitable Quentin Blake. Too good to miss!

A book well worth the money

I found "Wizzil" at the local library and thought it would be just another picture book to share with my children. As I started reading it, I was instantly hooked on the writing style of author William Steig. This book is "awesome" and "highly entertaining." I am also a children's writer myself trying to break into the business, so I have read and studied many children's picture books--this one by far stands out as being one of the best written. The imagination of William Steig is very comical as well as highly entertaining. His writing style is one of the best. You can't help but love his characters and sink into the story. I am going to purchase my own copy of this book--this is one story my kids will want to hear over and over. It is a purchase well worth the price. I was amazed to find out he also wrote "Shrek." What a talented writer!

What a Witch...

Wizzil, that horrible, nasty hag is bored and decides to entertain herself by making the Frimp family suffer. She turns herself into a work glove and leaves herself right in the path of Grandpa, DeWitt Frimp. He picks up the glove, puts it on and just can't believe his good fortune. That is until strange things begin to happen. When he tries to swat houseflies, he hits everything but the flies, destroying the house. The rest of the family begins to suffer, too. They develope unbearable itches that only get worse with scratching. At dinner, meatballs begin exploding and water spurts like fountains, right out of their glasses. The next morning, the whole house begins to shake and won't stop. DeWitt, can't take it anymore. He figures it must be the glove, that's when all the trouble started and throws it into the river. Then a strange thing happens. The glove turns back into Wizzil. She sputters and thrashes and sinks. DeWitt can't stand to watch her drown and jumps into the water to save her. As he pulls the repulsive witch to shore, all that mean nastiness washes away and when Wizzil and DeWitt look into each others eyes, it's true love, happily ever after..... Award winning author, William Steig has written another terrific story full of silly characters, laugh-out-loud scenes and hip kid-speak language that will charm and delight youngsters. Quentin Blake's expressive, busy cartoon-like illustrations compliment the story perfectly and together they've authored a picture book kids will want to read again and again. Perfect for children 4-8, Wizzil is a winner.

3 1/2 stars: An interesting look at the criminalization of American schools

Prelude to Prison is a study of the effect that the criminalization of our schools has on the future of the attending students. Students are not just being punished for offenses thought of as criminal, but are also being suspended, arrested, and/or brought in front of judges (for suspension hearings) for "offenses" such as swearing, snapping bras, or throwing tantrums.

The author spends a lot of time at the beginning of the book looking at the evolution of our prison systems and how more and more people are being funneled into jail/prison, especially compared to the 1960s and 1970s. About 15% of the way into the book, we are first introduced to the "meat" of this book - how the current punishments in school change the perception and future of the involved students. The book continues in this vein for a while while giving us case examples from students who were involved in Out of School Suspensions or Alternative Schools, as well as showcasing the security measures used in schools compared to alternative schools and even prisons.

While I found this book very interesting, I found that the almost constant citations disrupted the flow or the book. I also found that due to how the author structured the book due to the way it was sectioned: explaining the school systems, the suspension process, backstories, alternative schools, etc. There is a lot of overlap between sections which led to the same information being given, though sometimes re-worded.

Prelude to Prison

This heartbreaking book shows how poor students, mostly students of color, are tracked through the educational system to prison through the use of suspensions, surveillance and heavy handed tactics by police and school officials. Due to tracking, which begins in middle school, students begin the process of being delegitimatized and marginalized and sent to "alternative" education which is the first step in the process towards prison. One unique feature of this book is how Weissman prioritizes student perspective and gives voice to their understanding of the school to prison pipeline. I could not stop listening to the smart and insightful students in this book and how the author supports them in their explorations. One issue that did seem missing is the impact of privatization of education and the growth of charter schools. Overall excellent read and I have already begun to recommend this book to educators, students and organizers.

Being "rude" is not a criminal offense.

I kind figured out what I’d see in this book long before I read it. Kids today, especially in rough neighborhoods, get suspended for just about anything, and if that’s not bad enough, they can get arrested too. A kid is nodding off in the classroom, the teacher yells at him, he says “shut up,” and the teacher calls in the dean to remove him. The kid refuses to leave, they call in the school safety officers, and they handcuff the kid. He’s taken to the lockup, booked, and even if the judge throws the charges out, it still costs time. By time I mean instruction time in the school, the police officer’s time, and the court’s time. Taxpayers pay for it all.

Prelude to Prison gives many examples of how these injustices are ruining entire communities. White kids get suspended for pranks or improper clothing, while minorities get suspended for getting into fights. In Delaware, a 7th grader was suspended for “butt slapping.” In Florida, a boy was suspended for pointing his finger at a teacher and saying “pow-pow.” The author interviews parents, teachers, police, judges, and blames them all equally.

There isn’t much of a solution to these problems, except maybe birth control. Teachers should not be able to throw kids out just for disrespect, which is usually just plain old immaturity. If a kid says ‘that’s stupid s***” that doesn’t mean the kid’s being disrespectful, it might just be an impulse. Kids from troubled families aren’t going to be easy to convince of anything, so they’ll be wary of learning.

Another fantastic book.

Just like her other work, this is fabulous! It is perfect for the 7+ child that is ready for deeper chapter books. The little boy in the story is perfect to engage children of this age. Great as a read aloud or personal fun reading for an older child... 8 or 9. I am very impressed with this book and all the joy it brings. Thank you Sieglinde!!

My boys, 11 and 8, are either smiling and giggling while I read or saying again and again what a good book this is. The day I started reading it my oldest said: "I wish this happened to me!". Julia Dye, Ph.D. keeps the entertainment industry honest through technical advising and performer training, and helps Hollywood directors capture the realities of warfare. As a partner in the consulting firm Warriors, Inc., she provided weapons training to Colin Farrell for the film Alexander and with the military advisory team, oversaw historical accuracy for the HBO series, The Pacific. Dye earned her doctorate in hoplology (the anthropology of human conflict) from The Union Institute & University. 'I Can Understand' is inspired by my relationship with my older brother, Jeremy, who was mentally and physically disabled. When children would see my brother and ask why he looked and acted different, my mother would respond, "He can't talk, but he can understand." Throughout my childhood and into adulthood, I would see people stare at my brother and be afraid of him, simply because they didn't know what it meant to be disabled. This inspired me to write a book to help children have a better understanding of people with special needs. My brother passed away in February 2013, and I want what he taught me to be shared with others. The impact he had on my life is reflected in the book's positive message.

The book tells the story of Joey and Ava, a brother and sister. Joey is physically and mentally handicapped, while Ava is not. Narrator Joey explains how even though he and Ava are different, they still have similar interests and a loving relationship. Like all people, Joey wants to be accepted. The book gives Joey an opportunity to speak for himself and the reader gets to learn his perspective.

When I was a kid, I only had one book that showed a character in a wheelchair, and that book was so special to me. I wanted to see people like my brother in books, and there are many kids who will benefit from the illustrations, words, and overall mission of 'I Can Understand.'

This book illustrated and told through the story what it is like being a person with disabililties

I had the chance to read this to my children today, age 5 and 9. Let me start by saying, my older daughter, has worked with Special Olympics 2 hrs./week over the past 2-3 months this year and got to know many individuals with various disabilities. She wanted to learn more so we researched at the library. We did not find much to choose from, especially in story form. We have talked many times about the "why" and perhaps "how" people have disabilities.
This book illustrated and told through the story what it is like being a person with disabililties. The book emphasized that, although someone may not be able to do what others can or express themselves in a similiar fashion, that that doesn't make them any different than ourselves. It may seem like a message all should understand, but it could not be more needed than today. Many opportunities to interact with others of disability exist, but lack of knowledge or empathy may make that difficult. The author speaks to children in a respectful way through this book. Children can learn much, through the first person perspective, that individuals with disabilities deserve the same regard and love that those without disabilities are given.
I am eager to own this book to read again and again with my children. It is tenderly written and colorfully illustrated. I highly recommmend!

Good teaching tool!

In the spirit of transparency, I have to disclose that I contributed to the Kickstarter campaign for this book's publication. Yes, I have a personal connection to the women who created it, but I also spent about half my career in elementary education, and I can tell you that I would have loved to have this book to read to my students.

In its portrayal of Joey, a boy with special needs, and his sister Ava, the book gives young readers a glimpse at the world from Joey's point of view—from inside a wheelchair, but also from inside a the circle of a sunny and loving relationship with his sister. Kids are keen observers, especially when it comes to people who are different, but most would have difficulty putting themselves in Joey's shoes. I Can Understand provides an important opportunity to spark conversations about empathy and open-mindedness.

The sweet illustrations are so engaging, they'll support multiple readings of the book, as kids will always find something new in the images. This is a great book for your personal collection or for classroom use.

This book is so touching and well done. Aviva and Milan did a great job with the book. I am excited to be able to share this book with my nephews who are also special needs. It is important to remember that people with special needs are just as fabulous as anyone else. I would recommend this book a million times. The illustrations are fabulous and really capture the attention of the readers or listeners. Well done!

A breed of hardy women with salt in their veins

“Lady Castaways” offers an eclectic mix and insightful account of the misfortune of various females and their behaviour when confronted with the trauma of being shipwrecked.
I avoid saying a cross section of women because, in most cases, these women are the wives of sea captains. For them the dangers of the deep are not unknown, even so, how they face up to the diabolical situations they find themselves in, often being the sole female aboard, is remarkable. While some suffer at the hands of fellow (male) victims, most show incredible courage. Even prior to the ship foundering some demonstrate qualities of leadership, seamanship and nautical instinct.
“Lady Castaways” is a readable and well researched collection of tales about ladies who have survived a shipwreck and lived to tell the tale. Thanks to maritime historian, Joan Druett, for bringing these oft forgotten stories to life.

If you want real life survival stories, turn off the television and pick up Lady Castaways.

So-called "Reality" TV "survivor shows" pale in comparison to the accounts of real survivors -- especially as related by nautical historian, biographer and novelist, Joan Druett.

Druett is an authority on women aboard ships during the age of sail. Lady Castaways is a reprise of real accounts of shipwrecked women brought vividly to life in one collection. These stories bring to light the long-forgotten experiences of women on ill-fated sailing ships and are exciting, inspiring survival stories in themselves.

Joan Druett’s expertise in the subject of women aboard commercial sailing ships, generally as wives and assistants to their sea captain husbands, has been well established with her previous books, particularly Petticoat Whalers, Hen Frigates, and She Captains -- and numerous published articles. In Lady Castaways she further explores women on ships -- ill fated ships -- relating how they survived and contributed to the survival of others, based on first-hand accounts. Whalers, privateers, blockade runners, scientific missions, merchantmen and private trading vessels are all vividly portrayed.

Had these ships not been wrecked we would not have ever known the women were aboard and the role they played. The collection is valuable historically but more than that, it’s just good reading. Forget the staged, televised 21st century survival stories -- Joan Druett's well-documented Lady Castaways surpasses all of these and is far more impressive for being true.

The National Guard as a component of the military establishment.

Many readers will find this a little heavy but I find it to be an outstanding research of the National Guard and its role in the American Military establishment. I can't help but to think President Wilson saw the border situation as an opportunity to get us on a war footing without admitting the fact to the general public. Having served in the 17th Infantry Regiment back in the 1960's I am drawn to all things about the border with Mexico during the period because the 17th Infantry entered Mexico with the Expedition in 1916.
The fact that General Funston drilled the boys to death while he had them under his command isn't surprising given the war clouds on the horizon.

The First Test of the National Guard

'The authors, who’ve written widely on the cross-border aspects of the Mexican Revolution, give us the first scholarly look at the very neglected deployment the recently formed National Guard on the border in 1916, prompted not so much by Pancho Villa’s incursion into Texas that year as by belligerent threats from some Mexican leaders and the “Plan de San Diego” Mexican-American insurgency. After several chapters setting scene, the bulk of the book covers the activation of the Guard, concentration, deployment to the border, assignment to various posts from Brownsville to California, and the performance of the troops.

'Each chapter covers a particular sector of this long frontier, and the experience of the troops assigned there; which conveniently allows the authors to deal with each state contingent on an individual basis. We learn that some states were very ill-prepared, with units understrength, poorly equipped, and often largely untrained; New Mexico, it turns out, had to recruit many Texans to meet its quota, while the Texas Guard had a problem with corruption! On the other extreme, some states, fielded well-equipped, well-trained units, most notably Pennsylvania and New York, which each sent a full division; New York’s division was in fact being the most properly organized and equipped division, Regular or Guard, on the border.

'The authors also look at Regular Army hostility to the Guard, civil-military relations, racial interactions, and discipline and health, the army’s early efforts at motorization and its first practical use of airplanes, and give us looks many soldiers, some now forgotten and some, like still well-known, notably Douglas MacArthur and Dwight Eisenhower.
